If you want prerecorded videos to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock, first decide whether you want to manage a virtual machine or hand the continuous-streaming job to a managed service. What counts as an alternative to Google Compute Engine?
Google Compute Engine is a general-purpose virtual machine service. You choose and maintain the operating system, encoder, restart behavior, and monitoring. Alternatives fall into two different categories: managed services built for continuous YouTube streaming, and cloud video-processing platforms for more involved production workflows. They are not interchangeable in setup or control.
For prerecorded loops, YouTube’s encoder documentation lists Gyre as a cloud-based 24/7 streaming tool and Upstream as a cloud studio for easy 24/7 live video streaming. The same documentation lists AWS Elemental MediaLive as a verified encoder, but AWS positions it for live video processing workflows, including 24×7 channels. These listings describe different use cases; they do not establish that every option is a direct or lower-cost replacement for a VM.
Options for always-on YouTube streaming

- Google Compute Engine or another self-managed VM — maximum infrastructure control. A VM lets you choose and maintain the operating system and encoder, but you also own process supervision, monitoring, and recovery. Current competitor VM prices, outbound transfer allowances, and regional availability are not established here; verify them with each provider before comparing costs.
- AWS Elemental MediaLive — managed video processing. YouTube lists it as a verified encoder, and AWS describes workflows for 24×7 live channels. It may suit more involved video-processing needs, but the cited material does not establish its cost or suitability for a simple single-stream setup.
YouTube also lists Blackmagic Web Presenter 4K as hardware streaming equipment. That listing does not establish it as a replacement for a cloud VM replaying prerecorded content continuously.

How to choose: control, workload, and total cost
Choose a managed service when the goal is a continuous prerecorded loop
A managed service can remove the need to keep your own VM and encoder process running. Check that the service supports your intended YouTube workflow, playlist or looping behavior, stream-key setup, recovery process, and content format. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers encoder-based streams generally; it does not make a particular third-party service’s features or pricing permanent.
Choose a VM when you need to configure the system yourself
A VM gives general compute flexibility, but “always on” requires more than provisioning an instance. You need to keep the encoder process alive, monitor it, handle restarts, and distinguish a healthy VM from a healthy stream. YouTube says, “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” An encoder can be software or standalone hardware.

Compare full operating cost, not just instance rates
For any self-managed VM, account for compute, storage, sustained outbound traffic, software licensing if applicable, and the time needed to operate and troubleshoot it. Do not compare providers on a headline machine price alone: current rates, egress allowances, and region suitability vary and should be confirmed directly. For a managed service, compare the subscription scope and any limits that matter to your stream.
Reliability: a VM availability SLA is not stream uptime
Google’s current product page states a 99.95% single-instance availability SLA for memory-optimized VM families and 99.9% for other VM families. Those are Google’s instance-level SLA figures, not measured end-to-end YouTube stream uptime. An instance can be available while its encoder has stopped, its network path is interrupted, YouTube ingest is unavailable, or playback is not working.

For a continuous channel, evaluate the whole path: VM or service health, encoder/process health, connection to YouTube ingest, and the resulting live playback. With a VM, design and test monitoring and recovery for the components you operate; do not treat the instance SLA as a guarantee that a stream will remain live.
