There is no single confirmed best Amon Cryomancer build for every stage of Borderlands 4. For campaign leveling, PC Gamer’s September 2025 guide recommends Crucible with Cryo axes to freeze ordinary enemies, then close in with a shotgun; it switches to fire axes for bosses the guide says cannot be frozen. For a more defensive Cryo route, Scourge absorbs frontal damage and can release a Cryo Forgewave. Treat detailed skill and item recommendations as dated guide advice, not an October 2026 meta verdict: official updates changed Amon after that guide was published.
Choose your Amon Cryo build by what you need
Amon is a melee-focused, durable Forgeknight whose class identity supports both Cryo and Incendiary damage, according to the Epic Games Store class guide. A Cryo approach is especially useful when you want crowd control and openings to fight at close range. The key choice is whether to prioritize Crucible’s Frost Axes or Scourge’s frontal protection and Cryo attack.
| Situation | Starting point | Why choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign leveling; freeze ordinary enemies and follow up at close range | Crucible with Cryo axes; use fire axes against bosses, per PC Gamer’s September 2025 guide | Freezing enemies creates an opening to close distance and use a shotgun. The guide says bosses cannot be frozen. |
| More protection while keeping a Cryo action-skill option | Scourge | Its Forgeshield absorbs frontal damage into Vengeance and can release a Cryo Forgewave. |
| Endgame heavy-ordnance play | Vengeance/Scourge setup, favoring Cryo, as recommended by PC Gamer | Scourge fits the guide’s defensive, ordnance-oriented approach; Crucible may be preferable when a shorter action-skill cooldown matters. |
The descriptions of Crucible, Scourge and Amon’s class identity are also covered by the Epic Games Store guide. The PC Gamer recommendations are from its Amon builds guide; they are recommendations, not a universal performance guarantee.
Campaign leveling: freeze, then fight close
Use Crucible to control ordinary enemies
For a Cryo-focused leveling route, PC Gamer recommends Crucible and Cryo axes. The axes can freeze most ordinary enemies, giving you a chance to get close and follow up with a shotgun. This pairing makes the most sense if you enjoy aggressive, close-range combat and want to interrupt groups before committing to a target.

Switch to fire axes for bosses
The same guide advises using fire axes against bosses because it says larger enemies cannot be frozen. That is a situational change in approach, not a reason to abandon Cryo for the whole campaign: use the crowd-control plan on ordinary enemies and adjust the axe element for the boss encounters described by the guide.
Keep the weapon choice flexible
PC Gamer calls Hot Slugger a useful, easy-to-get legendary shotgun for this approach, but says specific gear is not required. Treat that as the guide’s recommendation rather than a guarantee about drops or results. A shotgun supports the close-range follow-up, but the core idea is the freeze-and-approach playstyle, not one mandatory item.

Alternative leveling route: build around Scourge
PlayBorderlands’ Amon level 1–60 guide offers a different Cryo-capable progression route centered on Scourge. The excerpted guide has no visible publication date, so use it as an alternate plan rather than assuming its point allocations reflect the current patch.
Scourge’s Forgeshield absorbs frontal damage and builds Vengeance; activating the action skill again releases a Cryo Forgewave. The PlayBorderlands route invests in status effects, gun damage and Berserk. Berserk grants bonus Cryo damage to melee and gun attacks when the action skill is activated, tying the shield’s defensive use to offensive follow-through.

This route is a better conceptual fit if you want a shielded approach and Cryo damage across weapon and melee attacks. It is not simply the Crucible leveling route with a different button: Scourge centers on frontal protection and Vengeance, while the PC Gamer Crucible recommendation emphasizes freezing enemies with axes and closing in.
Scourge for defense or endgame ordnance
Scourge’s Forgeshield absorbs frontal damage into Vengeance, then can launch a Cryo Forgewave, as described by the Epic Games Store class guide. PC Gamer recommends Scourge in its Vengeance heavy-ordnance build, lists Cryo as the favored element and names Super Soldier as a recommended legendary shield.

That same PC Gamer build discussion says Crucible may be preferable when you want a shorter action-skill cooldown. Choose between them based on what the encounter and your preferred rhythm demand: Scourge offers the stated frontal protection and Cryo Forgewave, while Crucible is the alternative the guide flags for cooldown. The sources do not establish one as categorically best for every endgame situation.

PC Gamer’s other featured builds illustrate how much Amon’s trees can change the playstyle:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- One-Punch Man: uses Calamity and Scourge and centers on melee damage. It may suit players seeking melee burst, but it should not be treated as the same plan as a Cryo leveling route.
- Cyber Viking: centers on Cybernetics and lists Incendiary as its favored element. It is an alternative for players interested in that action-skill-oriented approach, not a Cryo build by default.
Compare builds by the action skill, combat distance, survivability and damage style you want. Vengeance, Calamity and Cybernetics support materially different approaches; blending one build’s point allocation into another without explaining the tradeoff can change the way the character plays.
Check the patch date before copying point allocations
The detailed PC Gamer build guide dates from September 2025, while official notes document subsequent Amon balance changes. That gap matters if you are copying exact skill points or relying on an old item ranking.
- January 15, 2026 official update notes report that Amon’s Forgeaxe and Forgehammer detonation damage increased by about 72%, and Freezer Burn Cryo/Incendiary bonus damage increased to 9%.
- January 29, 2026 official major update notes say Cryonic Thrum’s bonus Cryo damage is now consistent in multiplayer. The notes also state: “Long term, we want to ensure each Vault Hunter has plenty of build diversity, with each Action Skill having its own pros and cons.”
- Version 1.6 notes dated April 30, 2026 list further Amon changes, including increased Forgedrone speed, increased Tritanium Knuckles skill damage per point, and changes to Bullet Storm and Armor of Contempt.
The Version 1.6 source announced a May 28 update with additional balance changes, but Amon-specific notes for that later update are not established here. As a result, the options above are grounded in the dated guides and official changes listed, not a claim that any exact allocation has been validated against every update through October 2026.
