The commonly repeated stick-and-rags recipe is based on a 2014 community post, so treat it as version-sensitive and follow the prompts in your current game build.
Choose where to build or use a fireplace
You can make a fireplace on the ground or use an existing indoor stove or fireplace. Bohemia Interactive’s Update 1.08 documents using cooking equipment, kindling and fire fuel to create a fireplace at an indoor fixture, and says items can be attached directly to a fireplace. It does not establish every current difference in setup or performance between indoor fixtures and a ground fireplace.
- Ground fireplace: An improvised option when you have a suitable place and the materials to make one.
- Indoor stove or fireplace: An existing fixture that can be used with kindling and fuel, according to the Update 1.08 feature notes.
In either case, use the action prompts shown by your current game build to confirm what can be placed, added or ignited.
Make an improvised fireplace
A 2014 community post describes combining a stick with rags or a bandage to make a fireplace kit, placing wood in it and lighting it with matches. Because this is old player guidance rather than a current official recipe guide, the exact materials and crafting steps may differ in your version.

- Try combining a stick with rags or a bandage and check whether the fireplace-kit crafting action appears.
- If the kit is created, place it where you want the fireplace, then add fuel using the available prompts.
- Use an ignition item, such as matches, only if the game offers the corresponding action.
If the recipe or action is unavailable, do not assume you have missed a universal key sequence: check the current interaction prompts and your platform’s controls.
Add fuel and cookware
DayZ treats the fireplace as an object with fuel and cooking interactions, not as firewood held in your inventory. The official Update 1.08 notes describe kindling and fire fuel used with indoor stoves and fireplaces, as well as attaching items directly to fireplaces. Update 1.17 documents an improvised cookware stand for a fireplace.
