Best Android box 2026: Our top picks for TV, gaming & more

The best Android TV box for most U.S. buyers in 2026 is the onn. 4K Pro Streaming Device, provided you can find it near its $59.98 list price. It delivers Google TV, 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, 32GB of storage, Wi-Fi 6, Ethernet, USB-A, a backlit remote and hands-free Gemini voice control for far less than most rivals.

Buy the Google TV Streamer (4K) instead if you want Google’s own hardware, gigabit Ethernet and Matter/Thread smart-home features. Choose the NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro for Plex Media Server, USB storage, AI upscaling and the strongest Android-TV gaming feature set. Outside the U.S., the Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) is the most practical budget alternative. The smaller onn. 4K Plus is worth considering only when it is substantially cheaper than the Pro.

This guide covers certified Android TV and Google TV devices—not generic boxes that merely run a phone version of Android. Prices and availability are time-sensitive; U.S. prices below were checked against the supplied listings for August 10, 2026.

Best Android boxes at a glance

There is no single best box for every buyer. A $60 device is the right choice for ordinary streaming, while a $200 box can still make sense if it will run a Plex server or deliver 4K cloud gaming. This is the shortlist:

NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro Best for gaming, Plex and enthusiast media $199.99 in the U.S. Android TV 11; up to 4K/60 Dolby Vision; HDR10; AI upscaling; Dolby Atmos support 3GB / expandable via USB Gigabit Ethernet; two USB 3.0 ports 2019-era hardware, HDMI 2.0b and no AV1 decoding
Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) Best international value Varies by country Google TV; 4K Dolby Vision, HDR10+; Dolby Atmos, DTS:X 2GB / 32GB Wi-Fi 6; USB 2.0; no built-in Ethernet Regional app catalogs, prices and support vary
onn. 4K Plus Cheapest worthwhile option $49.98 on the checked listing Google TV; 4K Dolby Vision; Dolby Atmos 2GB / 16GB Wi-Fi 6; no Ethernet; no USB-A Poor value when close to the Pro’s price
Homatics Box R 4K Plus Local media and Kodi enthusiasts Varies by retailer and region Android TV/Google TV experience; 4K/60 AV1; Dolby Atmos support 4GB / 32GB Wi-Fi 6; gigabit Ethernet; HDMI 2.1 Regional certification and firmware need careful checking

Retail prices, stock and even the exact regional model can change. In particular, the onn. Pro is officially limited to the United States and Puerto Rico, and a current Walmart page view has shown the device out of stock despite listing the $59.98 price. Check the seller, model number, return policy and regional compatibility before ordering.

#1 Best Overall
Xiaomi Android Google TV Box S 3rd Gen, 4K UHD TV Box Dolby Vision Atmos & DTS:X, 2GB + 32GB Storage WiFi 6 HDMI 2.1 360° Bluetooth Remote Voice Control for Television Internet Smartphones Streaming

Which Android box should you buy?

  • Buy the onn. 4K Pro if you are in the U.S., want the best streaming value, need USB storage or Ethernet, and can buy it near $60.
  • Buy the Google TV Streamer if gigabit Ethernet, Google Home integration, Matter, Thread, 4GB of RAM and first-party Google support justify the extra cost.
  • Buy the SHIELD TV Pro if the box itself needs to run Plex Media Server, attach USB 3.0 storage, upscale video or provide the most capable GeForce NOW experience available on Android TV.
  • Buy the Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) if you live in a market where it is officially sold and its local price is clearly below the Google TV Streamer.
  • Buy the onn. 4K Plus only when its price is meaningfully below the Pro—roughly $30–$40 is more compelling than $50.
  • Consider the Homatics Box R 4K Plus when AV1, gigabit Ethernet, expandable local-media storage and Kodi matter more than the simplest certified mainstream experience.

How these recommendations were judged

The ranking gives the greatest weight to features that determine whether a streaming box is actually pleasant and dependable to use, rather than simply counting processor cores or RAM:

  1. Certified streaming access — 25%: major services, Google Play access, Play Protect certification and regional app availability.
  2. Everyday speed and reliability — 20%: app launches, menu responsiveness, available memory, storage and firmware stability.
  3. Picture and sound — 15%: 4K/60, HDR formats, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, frame-rate switching and audio passthrough.
  4. Gaming — 15%: GeForce NOW, Steam Link, Moonlight, native Android games, controller support and network performance.
  5. Media-server and local-file capability — 10%: Plex Server, USB storage, codec support, AV1 and lossless-audio passthrough.
  6. Connectivity and expandability — 10%: Ethernet speed, Wi-Fi, USB, HDMI and storage options.
  7. Price, support and availability — 5%: current cost, manufacturer support evidence and country restrictions.

This approach prevents an old but capable enthusiast device from winning on features that most streamers never use, while still recognizing when those features are worth paying for.

1. onn. 4K Pro Streaming Device — best overall for U.S. buyers

The 2026 onn. 4K Pro is the strongest value recommendation in the U.S. It combines the features that usually require a much more expensive box: Google TV, 4K output, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, 32GB of storage, 3GB of RAM, Wi-Fi 6, Ethernet and a USB-A data port. Its listed price is $59.98.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it wins

  • 32GB of storage: enough room for a normal streaming library, several utilities and casual games without immediately fighting the operating system for space.
  • 3GB of RAM: a useful step above the 2GB found in many budget devices, especially when switching between apps.
  • Useful connectivity: Wi-Fi 6, wired networking and USB-A make it more flexible for controllers, media drives and accessories than the onn. 4K Plus.
  • Home-theater basics: it supports up to 4K, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos when the content, app, display, receiver and HDMI path support them.
  • Better remote: the remote is backlit and includes a remote-finding feature. The device also advertises hands-free Gemini voice control.

Independent testing by Android Authority found the 2026 Pro fast and reliable for normal streaming, with its 32GB capacity remaining practical after installing multiple apps. That is attributed reviewer testing, not a claim of testing by this article.

What you give up

The Ethernet port is limited to 100Mbps, not gigabit. That is ample for Netflix and other mainstream streaming, but less attractive for moving large files over a network or serving high-bitrate local media. The 3GB of RAM is good for the price but not a match for the Google TV Streamer’s 4GB.

More importantly, the onn. Pro is officially compatible only with the United States and Puerto Rico. It is not a sensible international recommendation simply because a marketplace seller will ship it overseas. Imported units may have different app catalogs, warranty coverage, power requirements or voice-control behavior. Walmart stock can also change quickly, so do not treat $59.98 as a guaranteed permanent price.

Buy it if: you are in the U.S. and want the most features per dollar for streaming, casual gaming, casting and light local-media use.

Skip it if: you need gigabit Ethernet, a published long-term support commitment for your market, or a box that can run a serious Plex server.

2. Google TV Streamer (4K) — best premium Google TV device

The Google TV Streamer costs $99.99 in the U.S. It is the better choice when the buyer values Google’s own hardware and smart-home ecosystem more than the onn. Pro’s unusually low price.

Why pay the extra $40?

  • 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage: the extra memory gives it more headroom for app switching and future software than most budget boxes.
  • Gigabit Ethernet: preferable for high-bitrate local media, Plex clients, cloud gaming and busy wireless environments.
  • Google Home integration: the device includes a Google Home panel and works as a Matter hub and Thread border router, making it more than a conventional streaming player.
  • Broad video support: Google lists 4K HDR at 60fps, Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG.
  • Broad audio support: Google lists Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Atmos.

Google’s launch announcement describes the Streamer as the company’s replacement for Chromecast as its premium streaming device. It is therefore the cleanest choice for buyers who want Google TV and Google Home features in first-party hardware.

Support and setup details

As of the June 23, 2026 firmware page, Google lists build UTTK.260317.003 with an April 2026 security patch. Google’s Australian compliance documentation gives the product a published security-support period of at least five years from its U.S. availability date, ending no earlier than September 24, 2029. That is a useful documented benchmark, but because the statement is tied to products sold in Australia, it should not be presented as an identical legal commitment in every country.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is one easy-to-miss extra cost: Google says the required certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is sold separately. The box can output 4K/60; it is not a 4K/120 gaming device merely because it uses an HDMI 2.1 connection. Confirm that your TV, AVR or soundbar supports the HDR and audio formats you intend to use.

Buy it if: you want gigabit Ethernet, Google Home/Matter/Thread features, 4GB of RAM and clearer published support evidence.

Skip it if: you only need Netflix, YouTube and a few other streaming apps and would rather save $40—or if you specifically need a USB-A port for attached storage.

3. NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro — best for gaming, Plex and enthusiast media

The NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro remains the most capable conventional Android TV box for demanding enthusiast tasks, but it is not the best value for ordinary streaming. Its official U.S. price is $199.99.

Rank #2
Google TV Streamer 4K - Fast Streaming Entertainment on Your Device with Voice Search Remote - Watch Movies, Shows, Live, and Netflix in HDR - Smart Home Control - 32 GB of Storage - Hazel
  • The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
  • HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
  • See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
  • Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

Why the older SHIELD still matters

  • Plex Media Server: NVIDIA explicitly supports running Plex Media Server on the Pro, with USB-connected storage available for a local library.
  • Two USB 3.0 ports: useful for external hard drives, SSDs, keyboards, controllers and other accessories.
  • AI upscaling: NVIDIA lists AI-enhanced upscaling to 4K/60, which can improve the appearance of lower-resolution material. Upscaling is processing, not a native 4K source.
  • Gaming ecosystem: it supports GeForce NOW, Steam Link, Moonlight and Android TV games, with gigabit Ethernet for low-latency wired networking.
  • Strong local-media foundation: the combination of USB, Ethernet and mature media-player software is still difficult to match in a single Android TV box.

Its hardware is a Tegra X1+ platform with a 256-core GPU and 3GB of RAM. NVIDIA lists Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDMI 2.0b, gigabit Ethernet and Android TV 11. The product’s age is therefore central to the buying decision: it is a highly capable specialist platform, not modern hardware across every category.

The limitations in 2026

The SHIELD Pro dates from 2019 and remains on Android TV 11. It lacks AV1 decoding and uses HDMI 2.0b, even though it supports 4K/60 and HDR. Its high price also makes it difficult to recommend over the onn. Pro or Google TV Streamer for a bedroom TV or basic living-room streaming.

NVIDIA is still supporting it. The latest listed SHIELD Experience 9.2.4 update includes security patches through January 2026. Continued updates are positive, but they do not turn the Tegra X1+ into a current-generation chipset or add AV1 and HDMI 2.1 capabilities.

The Plex Server support page is the key reason to buy the Pro. A Plex client merely plays a library hosted elsewhere; a Plex server makes the box itself host and serve that library. If you only watch files from a NAS or another computer, a cheaper certified box may be sufficient. If the SHIELD will be the server attached to USB storage, it remains the clearest recommendation.

Buy it if: you need Plex Media Server, USB 3.0 storage, AI upscaling, GeForce NOW’s 4K/HDR mode or a mature enthusiast media platform.

Skip it if: you want the newest Android/Google TV hardware, AV1, HDMI 2.1, the best value or a modern 4K/120 gaming device.

4. Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) — best international budget alternative

The Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) is the most useful alternative for readers outside the onn. product’s U.S. market. Xiaomi lists Google TV, 4K output, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, HDMI 2.1 and USB 2.0.

The current 3rd Gen model has a quad-core Cortex-A55-based processor clocked up to 2.5GHz, 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Be careful when comparing listings: older coverage and older Xiaomi models used 8GB of storage, while the 3rd Gen specifications list 32GB.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The important compromise

There is no built-in RJ45 Ethernet port. Streaming over Wi-Fi 6 is normally fine when the router is nearby and the network is stable, but local-media enthusiasts and cloud gamers may prefer a wired connection. The only listed physical expansion port is USB 2.0, so it is less flexible than the onn. Pro and SHIELD Pro.

Xiaomi’s FAQ says the device passed Google, Netflix HDR, Prime Video HDR and YouTube HDR software certification tests. That is useful evidence for the specific model, but app availability and platform features still vary by country. Google TV recommendations, services, voice functions, Netflix catalogs and warranty support should be checked in the market where you will use the box.

Buy it if: it is officially sold in your country at a good price and you want 32GB, Google TV, Wi-Fi 6 and Dolby Vision/HDR10+ without paying for a premium box.

Skip it if: you need Ethernet, more than 2GB of RAM, USB-heavy local-media use or the clearest long-term support policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. onn. 4K Plus — best only when heavily discounted

The onn. 4K Plus offers Google TV, 4K output, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi 6, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. The checked Walmart listing showed $49.98, although the lineup has also appeared at lower prices during 2026.

At $30–$40, it is a sensible inexpensive streaming device. At about $50, the 2026 onn. 4K Pro is usually the better purchase if it is available for roughly $60. The Pro adds twice the storage, another gigabyte of RAM, Ethernet, USB-A, a backlit remote, remote finding and hands-free voice control.

The Plus has no Ethernet, no USB-A accessory port, no remote finder and no hands-free control. Reviews from Android Authority and PCWorld found it suitable for ordinary streaming, but its 2GB/16GB configuration is less attractive for games, utilities, local downloads and heavy multitasking.

  • Multiple Connection Options: Bluetooth 5.4 technology and the TV box’s two built-in USB ports let you easily connect your phone, speakers, keyboard, and other peripherals

Buy it if: it is substantially cheaper than the Pro or you specifically want a small, basic Google TV device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skip it if: the price gap to the Pro is only a few dollars, you need wired networking or you plan to install many games and media applications.

6. Homatics Box R 4K Plus — best niche local-media alternative

The Homatics Box R 4K Plus is aimed more at local-media enthusiasts than at buyers who simply want the least troublesome Netflix box. Its official specification page lists 4GB of RAM, 32GB of flash storage, a quad-core Cortex-A55 platform, AV1 support, Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi 6, gigabit Ethernet, HDMI 2.1 and 4K/60 output.

Those specifications make it interesting for Kodi, local files, network shares and high-bitrate playback. AV1 support may also matter as more services and personal media libraries use the codec. Gigabit Ethernet is useful for moving large files and serving media across a wired network.

However, do not buy it without checking the exact regional model, current firmware and app certification. Retailer availability, firmware quality, regional Netflix support and user-reported passthrough behavior can vary more than they do with Google, NVIDIA or Walmart’s mainstream devices. It is a good informed-buyer option, not the automatic recommendation for a family TV.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy it if: you understand Kodi and local-media configuration and want AV1, gigabit Ethernet, USB expansion and 4GB/32GB hardware.

Skip it if: guaranteed mainstream app behavior, simple setup and broad official support matter more than codec and port flexibility.

Android TV versus Google TV: what are you actually buying?

Android TV is Google’s television platform. Google TV is the newer user-facing interface and content-discovery layer built on that platform. A certified Google TV device can provide Google Play apps, Google Cast and TV-focused voice control, while Android TV and Google TV menus, recommendations, advertising and available services can differ by country.

That distinction matters because a marketplace listing that says only Android may describe a box running a mobile or tablet version of Android. It may not have a TV interface, proper remote navigation, Google Play certification, Netflix certification or reliable updates. Google’s Android TV information describes the TV-focused platform, while its Play Protect certification page warns that uncertified devices may lack reliable Google apps, may not function properly with Play Store apps and do not have the same security assurances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fire TV is a separate category. Amazon’s Fire OS has Android lineage, but a Fire TV Cube or Fire TV Stick is not silently interchangeable with a Google TV or Android TV box. It uses Amazon’s software, app store and ecosystem, so it should be compared separately rather than placed in an Android TV ranking without explanation.

Gaming: choose the right kind of gaming box

Streaming boxes use the word gaming to describe several very different experiences. A device that runs casual Android games is not necessarily good at cloud gaming, PC streaming or emulation.

Best for cloud gaming: SHIELD TV Pro

NVIDIA officially supports GeForce NOW on SHIELD and compatible Android TV devices. NVIDIA lists 4K/60 support with an Ultimate membership on SHIELD. Generic Android TV support is generally specified at HD or Full HD depending on the device and plan, so do not assume that any cheap Google TV box can reproduce the SHIELD’s 4K/HDR GeForce NOW mode.

Cloud gaming depends heavily on the network, server location, membership tier, controller and display. A wired connection is preferable, but a strong, uncongested 5GHz or Wi-Fi 6 network can work well. The box does not create performance that the internet connection cannot deliver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for Steam Link and Moonlight

Steam Link supports Android TV and streams games from a host computer to the television. Moonlight provides an Android client for streaming from a PC running Sunshine or another supported host; its setup guidance covers the host and network configuration.

For these uses, latency and network stability usually matter more than a headline CPU clock speed. The SHIELD Pro’s gigabit Ethernet is attractive, as are the Ethernet ports on the onn. Pro and Homatics. The Google TV Streamer also has gigabit Ethernet. The Xiaomi TV Box S 3rd Gen and onn. 4K Plus rely on Wi-Fi.

Native Android games

Native Android gaming depends on the GPU, RAM, thermal design, storage and whether the game supports Android TV controls. Budget boxes are appropriate for casual games, streaming apps and older titles, but they are not replacements for a PlayStation, Xbox, gaming PC or Nintendo console. A Bluetooth controller is normally preferable to the bundled remote.

The 2GB/16GB onn. Plus is the least suitable shortlist choice for a large game library. The 3GB/32GB onn. Pro, 4GB/32GB Google TV Streamer and 4GB/32GB Homatics offer more storage headroom, but RAM and storage alone do not guarantee that a particular game will install or run well.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Emulation

SHIELD and newer Amlogic-based boxes can be appealing for retro emulation, but performance varies with the exact emulator, game, graphics renderer, controller and firmware. Do not buy one based on a promise that it will emulate a particular console generation without checking the specific software and games you intend to use. Emulation performance is not the same as official native-game support.

Home theater: what the specifications really mean

Dolby Vision is video; Dolby Atmos is audio

Dolby Vision is a high-dynamic-range video format. Dolby Atmos is an object-based audio format. A listing that calls Dolby Vision an audio feature is technically wrong.

A box’s support list is only one part of the chain. Dolby Vision requires compatible content, app support, a compatible TV and an HDMI path that can carry it. Dolby Atmos depends on the app, content, box output mode, receiver or soundbar, television and sometimes the playback software. A device that supports a format will not force every title or every TV to use it.

4K/60 is not 4K/120

All of the main devices here target up to 4K/60 rather than 4K/120. HDMI 2.1 can still help with newer display compatibility or particular audio-return configurations, but the label alone does not prove 4K/120 gaming. The SHIELD Pro’s HDMI 2.0b port is sufficient for its 4K/60 output. The Google TV Streamer requires a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable, which Google sells separately.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

HDR formats

  • HDR10: the baseline HDR format supported widely by TVs and streaming services.
  • Dolby Vision: a proprietary HDR format with dynamic metadata on supported content and equipment.
  • HDR10+: another dynamic-metadata HDR format, supported by the Google TV Streamer and Xiaomi TV Box S 3rd Gen among the listed devices.
  • HLG: a broadcast-oriented HDR format listed for the Google TV Streamer.

More formats are useful only when they match the TV, service and content you actually use. Do not select a box solely because its specification sheet has the longest HDR list.

Ethernet and Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi 5 is normally sufficient for mainstream streaming, and a good Wi-Fi 6 connection provides more capacity in busy environments. Ethernet becomes more valuable for cloud gaming, high-bitrate local files, Plex, crowded apartment networks and multiple simultaneous streams.

Gigabit Ethernet is mainly an advantage for local-media transfers and network workloads; ordinary Netflix streaming does not require gigabit speeds. The onn. Pro’s 100Mbps connection is sufficient for normal streaming but slower than the gigabit ports on the Google TV Streamer, SHIELD Pro and Homatics Box R 4K Plus.

Which box is best for Plex?

First decide whether you need a Plex client or a Plex Media Server:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Plex client: the box plays media hosted on a NAS, computer or separate server. Any of the certified Google TV devices may be suitable, depending on the file and whether the server can direct-play or must transcode it.
  • Plex Media Server: the box hosts the library and serves it to other devices. The SHIELD TV Pro is the clear choice among these products because NVIDIA explicitly supports Plex Media Server and USB-connected drives.

Client performance depends on the video codec, audio codec, subtitles, bitrate and transcoding requirements. A device that plays a compressed 4K file directly may struggle when a server must transcode several streams or handle demanding audio and subtitle combinations. The SHIELD Pro is better equipped for the server role, but it is still not a substitute for a dedicated NAS or desktop server for a large multi-user library.

How much storage and RAM do you need?

Advertised storage is not the same as free storage: the operating system, preinstalled apps and reserved system space consume part of it.

  • 8GB: restrictive once the system and apps are counted.
  • 16GB: adequate for ordinary streaming apps and occasional casual games.
  • 32GB: the sensible target for several games, Kodi add-ons, utilities, local downloads and longer-term use.
  • External storage: valuable for media libraries and games, but only when the box has a usable data port and the operating system supports the intended storage configuration.

The Google TV Streamer and onn. Pro each list 32GB. The Xiaomi TV Box S 3rd Gen and Homatics Box R 4K Plus also list 32GB, while the onn. 4K Plus lists 16GB. The SHIELD Pro has 16GB internal storage but adds two USB 3.0 ports for external drives.

More RAM can reduce app reloads when multitasking, but it is not a guarantee of speed. Software optimization, storage speed, thermal behavior and app compatibility matter too.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do you need an Android TV box at all?

A new, responsive smart TV may already provide every streaming app you need. Buying a separate box is worthwhile when:

  • the TV interface is slow or has stopped receiving useful updates;
  • a required app is missing from the TV’s app store;
  • you want Google TV, Google Cast or Google Assistant/Gemini features;
  • you want the same interface across several televisions;
  • you need better Ethernet, USB storage, Plex support or local-media playback;
  • you want to separate streaming hardware from a television that will outlast its built-in software.

A box cannot improve the source quality beyond what the service, subscription plan, display and network provide. It cannot turn ordinary content into genuine native 4K. Upscaling can make lower-resolution material look cleaner, but it is processing rather than a higher-resolution source. Nor will every external box produce a visibly better picture than a good modern TV; the most dependable benefits are usually app support, responsiveness, interface consistency, codec compatibility and connectivity.

Certified hardware versus a generic Android box

Cheap marketplace boxes often advertise large RAM capacities, “all channels,” “free Netflix” or a “fully loaded” setup. Those claims do not establish that the device is a certified Android TV product.

Before buying, look for:

  • an explicitly stated Android TV or Google TV platform;
  • Google Play Protect certification for the exact model;
  • Netflix certification for the exact model and market if Netflix matters;
  • Widevine certification where the intended services require it;
  • proper TV navigation and a remote designed for television use;
  • a manufacturer that publishes firmware updates and provides support;
  • an honest specification sheet showing the actual ports and Ethernet speed.

Google says uncertified devices may not function properly with Google apps or Play Store apps and do not have the same security assurances. A box may install an app while still failing to provide HD or 4K playback, secure content protection or dependable updates.

“Fully loaded” boxes may include unofficial apps or unauthorized streams. A streaming box does not legally include paid services, and having an app available is not the same as having a subscription entitlement. Buy certified hardware and install legitimate services. For IPTV, use a lawful provider and a compatible app rather than treating an “all channels” claim as a product feature.

Buying checklist

  1. Confirm the exact model and generation. The Xiaomi TV Box S 3rd Gen is not the same specification set as older Xiaomi boxes, and the 2026 onn. Pro is not the older budget onn. device.
  2. Check your country. The onn. products are U.S./Puerto Rico products. Xiaomi’s app catalog and pricing vary by market. Imported devices can have different power, warranty, remote and service behavior.
  3. Check the app you actually need. Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Max, regional broadcasters and HDR support can depend on certification and geography.
  4. Choose the network connection deliberately. Wi-Fi is fine for most streaming; Ethernet is preferable for local media, Plex and cloud gaming. Note whether the port is 100Mbps or gigabit.
  5. Budget for storage. Choose 32GB if you plan to install games, Kodi add-ons or many utilities. Confirm that USB ports support data and the storage setup you want.
  6. Check the entire HDMI chain. Consider the TV, AVR, soundbar, eARC, Dolby Vision passthrough and cable requirements—not only the box’s port label.
  7. Use a controller for games. The bundled remote is not a substitute for a Bluetooth or USB gamepad.
  8. Check the return policy. Streaming-service certification and HDR behavior can vary by regional SKU, firmware and connected equipment.

Bottom line by use case

For most U.S. homes, the onn. 4K Pro is the sensible default: it offers nearly everything a mainstream streamer needs at an unusually low price. The Google TV Streamer earns its premium through gigabit Ethernet, more RAM, first-party Google hardware and smart-home features. The SHIELD TV Pro is expensive and old, but remains the right specialist purchase for Plex Server, USB media, AI upscaling and GeForce NOW’s strongest Android TV experience.

International buyers should start with the Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) if it is officially available at a competitive price. The onn. 4K Plus is a valid cheap streamer only when discounted well below the Pro, while the Homatics Box R 4K Plus is best reserved for readers who specifically value local-media features and are prepared to verify regional firmware and certification.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Android TV box?

An Android TV box is a television-focused streaming device using Google’s Android TV platform or the Google TV interface built on it. Certified models provide TV-optimized navigation, Google Play apps, casting and voice control. A generic box that merely runs mobile Android is not automatically an Android TV device.

Is Google TV the same as Android TV?

Google TV is the user-facing interface and content-discovery layer built on Android TV. They are closely related, but menus, recommendations, advertising and available services vary by device and country. Check that a product is explicitly certified for Google TV or Android TV rather than advertised only as Android.

Do Android boxes include Netflix?

Certified devices generally provide access to official streaming apps, but Netflix availability, resolution and HDR support depend on the exact model, market, certification, subscription and connected TV. A generic uncertified box may install Netflix while being limited to low resolution or failing to work reliably.

Are Android TV boxes legal, and can they replace cable?

The hardware is legal. It does not legally include paid channels or subscriptions. Use official apps and a lawful IPTV or streaming provider. Be cautious of boxes advertised as fully loaded or offering free access to premium channels, since those claims may depend on unauthorized streams or unofficial software.

Which Android box is best for Plex?

The NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro is the best choice here when the box itself must run Plex Media Server, especially with USB-connected storage. If you only need a Plex client to play media hosted on a NAS or computer, a Google TV Streamer, onn. Pro, Xiaomi or Homatics device may be sufficient depending on codecs, subtitles, bitrate and transcoding.

Do I need Ethernet for an Android TV box?

No. A strong 5GHz or Wi-Fi 6 connection is normally enough for mainstream streaming. Ethernet is more valuable for cloud gaming, high-bitrate local files, Plex, crowded wireless networks and multiple simultaneous streams. Gigabit Ethernet is especially useful for local transfers; the onn. Pro’s 100Mbps port remains adequate for ordinary streaming.

Can I add storage to an Android TV box?

Only when the device has a suitable data port and its software supports the storage configuration you want. The onn. Pro has USB-A, the SHIELD Pro has two USB 3.0 ports and the Xiaomi model has USB 2.0. The Google TV Streamer has 32GB internal storage but is not the best choice if USB-attached storage is a priority.

Is the NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro still worth buying in 2026?

Yes, for Plex Media Server, USB 3.0 storage, AI upscaling, enthusiast local media and GeForce NOW’s 4K/HDR mode. It is not the best value for ordinary streaming: its hardware dates from 2019, it remains on Android TV 11, uses HDMI 2.0b, lacks AV1 decoding and costs about $199.99.

Is the onn. 4K Pro available outside the United States?

The listed 2026 onn. 4K Pro is officially compatible with the United States and Puerto Rico. Do not assume that a marketplace seller shipping it internationally provides local app support, warranty coverage, the correct power arrangement or the same voice and content features.

Does the Google TV Streamer include an HDMI cable?

No. Google says the Google TV Streamer requires a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, sold separately. Check the TV or receiver’s HDMI capabilities as well, particularly if you need Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos or eARC.

Can cheap Android TV boxes run Xbox Cloud Gaming?

Do not buy a box solely on the assumption that Xbox Cloud Gaming will have a fully supported TV experience. App availability and sideloading behavior can change by country and device. Check the current official service requirements and app listing for your exact model, and remember that a compatible controller and stable low-latency network are essential.

The Bottom Line

Best overall: onn. 4K Pro for U.S. buyers near $60. Best premium Google option: Google TV Streamer. Best for Plex and enthusiast gaming: NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro. Best international budget choice: Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen). Avoid generic uncertified boxes, regardless of how much RAM or how many “free channels” they advertise.
