Use genre and the sort of session you want as your first filters. A racing game, puzzle game and strategy game offer different kinds of play, and the roundup spans those categories rather than ranking one universal winner. Stuff’s list also includes both free and paid games.
- Choose by genre: look for the category you already enjoy, or use the list to try something different.
- Consider your session: decide whether you want a game to dip into briefly or one that invites a longer stretch. The roundup covers varied genres, but does not establish a session-length rating for each title.
- Check the listing: open the game’s Google Play page to confirm its current price, in-app purchases, regional availability and device requirements. Catalog details and chart positions can change.

Free games and paid games
A free download avoids an upfront purchase, but check the individual listing for in-app purchases and other purchase terms. A paid game has an upfront price; its listing is the place to confirm the current amount and whether any additional purchases apply.

Stuff described many games in its April 2026 roundup as costing less than a pint and some as free. That is the roundup’s relative-price wording, not a current price guide: prices, purchase models and availability can vary by region and change over time. Check the live listing before buying.
Playing on a phone, tablet or foldable
Most choices should start with the device you actually plan to use. A phone is convenient for portable play; a larger screen can be a better fit for games that make good use of the extra space. That does not mean every Android game has a tablet-specific interface.

Google’s Android team highlights selected games adapted for tablets and foldables, with examples that include interface scaling, landscape play, split-screen resizing and remappable controls. Google Android Director of Product Management Maru Ahues Bouza said of those recommendations, “These games make the most of the larger screen space.” The statement applies to Google’s selected titles, not to all Android games. Touch controls and gamepads
Do not assume controller support from a game’s genre or platform. Android Authority reports that Minecraft Bedrock on Android supports both built-in touch controls and controllers, but that example does not establish support for the other games in Stuff’s roundup.

Before connecting a gamepad, check the particular game’s Google Play listing or publisher information for controller compatibility, and confirm that the controller works with your device. What Google Play’s newer features mean for buyers
In an update dated 23 April 2026, Google Play described trials for select paid games and a single purchase unlocking mobile and PC versions for select titles, alongside cross-device discovery features. These options are selective: whether they appear depends on the title and can also vary by rollout, device or market.
