This curated guide includes both adaptations of anime and manga franchises and original games with anime-inspired worlds or storytelling. The picks are organized by the kind of play they offer, so you can start with the genre and story style you want rather than treating the list as a definitive ranking.
What counts as an anime game on PC?
For this guide, “anime game” is a broad editorial category: it includes licensed games based on anime or manga, as well as original games whose art direction or storytelling draws on anime. That matches the range seen in PC recommendations and publisher catalogs, but it is not a single genre. A fighting game, an action RPG and a story-led adventure can all fit.
PC availability is title-specific. Bandai Namco says its own anime-game lineup is available on PC via Steam; that does not establish availability for every anime game or publisher. Check each title’s current store listing for platform, region, system requirements and supported inputs. Bandai Namco’s anime-games catalog shows the range of its licensed adaptations.
Licensed anime and manga adaptations
Choose an adaptation if you want to revisit a familiar world
Licensed games are the natural starting point if you want to play with characters and settings from a show or manga you already know. Bandai Namco’s catalog, for example, includes BLEACH Rebirth of Souls, DEATH NOTE Killer Within, SPYxANYA: Operation Memories, NARUTO X BORUTO Ultimate Ninja STORM CONNECTIONS, ONE PIECE ODYSSEY and DRAGON BALL Z: KAKAROT. These illustrate how widely the play styles can vary even within licensed games: a familiar franchise does not tell you whether a title is a fighter, an adventure or an RPG.

What to check before buying
- Whether the game is on PC in your region and which storefront currently sells it.
- Whether the story assumes knowledge of the anime or manga, or works as a standalone entry.
- Whether its main appeal is single-player, competitive multiplayer or cooperative play; verify this on the individual listing rather than inferring it from the franchise.
- Current system requirements and input support, especially if you prefer a gamepad.
Original anime-inspired worlds
NieR:Automata — action RPG with its own setting
NieR:Automata on Steam is a strong option if you want an original world rather than a story tied to an existing anime or manga. Steam describes androids 2B, 9S and A2 fighting to reclaim a machine-driven dystopia, and classifies the game as Action and RPG. The listing identifies it as a single-player game and names Xbox controller support, which makes a gamepad an option rather than a requirement.
Steam lists the game’s release date as March 17, 2017, with Square Enix and PlatinumGames as developers and Square Enix as publisher. Its anime-influenced presentation sits alongside action and role-playing systems; it is not a licensed adaptation of a specific anime franchise.

How to choose your first PC anime game
- Pick the play style first. If you want direct combat, look at action games or fighters; if you prefer character progression and a longer adventure, consider an RPG; for story-first play, look for an adventure or narrative-focused title. “Anime” alone does not predict the gameplay.
- Decide whether you want a known franchise. An adaptation offers recognizable characters and setting, while an original game such as NieR:Automata asks you to enter a new world. Check whether a licensed title is meant for existing fans or can be enjoyed on its own.
- Match the play mode to your plans. Confirm whether the specific game is single-player, competitive or cooperative. Franchise reputation is not a reliable substitute for the current store description.
- Verify PC access and setup. Check the current Steam or other official PC listing for regional availability, system requirements and controller or keyboard support. Store details and availability can change.
Why these picks are a starting point, not a ranking
“Best” depends on what you want from a game: faithful franchise characters, a new world, a particular combat style or a solo story. Genre-first discovery is more useful than pretending those priorities can be measured on one universal scale. PC Gamer’s guide likewise treats anime games as a broad PC category spanning styles, while publisher catalogs such as Bandai Namco’s help identify licensed adaptations.
