A strong all-round Arcane Archer template in Baldur’s Gate 3 is Fighter 11 (Arcane Archer) / War Cleric 1. It keeps the subclass’s ranged attacks and Arcane Shots at the center of the build, while the one-level cleric dip adds a bonus-action weapon-attack option. That split is a published recommendation, not a proven best for every difficulty or play style; staying Fighter through level 12 is a reasonable alternative if you value another feat more than the dip.
Recommended Arcane Archer build at a glance
| Choice | Recommendation | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Core class | Fighter, choosing Arcane Archer at Fighter level 3 | Arcane Archer is a Fighter subclass whose magic-infused shots provide damage and control. |
| Endgame split | Fighter 11 (Arcane Archer) / War Cleric 1 | A published Patch 8 build recommends the dip for its bonus-action weapon-attack feature. |
| Feat priority | Sharpshooter | It is a key choice in that build guide, though its attack penalty can make shots less reliable. |
| Named weapon | Titanstring Bow | It is one of the named equipment choices in the cited build. |
| Ability priorities | Dexterity first; Constitution for durability; Intelligence if relying on saving-throw shots | Dexterity supports ranged weapon attacks, while Intelligence contributes to Arcane Shot save DCs. |
The cited guide favors the War Cleric level over a fourth feat at character level 12. Treat that as a preference, not a universal ranking: the best endpoint depends on whether the bonus-action attack or an additional feat better serves your character.
How to level an Arcane Archer
Choose Fighter through level 3
Start as a Fighter and select the Arcane Archer subclass at Fighter level 3. Larian introduced the subclass in Patch 8; its official announcement describes it as archery “when a little magic is involved.” The Community Update 34 announcement says Arcane Archer is available to choose from level 3, and the Patch 8 notes document its arrival.
Build toward Fighter 11
Keep Fighter as the main class so the build remains centered on weapon attacks and Arcane Archer features. The recommended final split is Arcane Archer Fighter 11 / War Cleric 1. The published guide presents War Cleric as a way to gain a bonus-action weapon attack and prefers it to taking a fourth feat at level 12; it does not establish that choice as best for every character or mode. See PC Gamer’s Patch 8 build guide for the source recommendation.

Decide what you want at level 12
Choose between the one-level War Cleric dip and Fighter 12 based on your priorities. The dip is the cited build’s action-economy choice; staying Fighter offers the additional feat the guide gives up. The available recommendation does not provide comparative test results, so there is no established universal winner.
What stats should an Arcane Archer use?
Prioritize Dexterity for ranged weapon attacks, then keep Constitution at a level that suits how much damage your character can tolerate. Intelligence is valuable when you expect enemies to face saving throws from your Arcane Shots. The save DC is 8 + proficiency bonus + Intelligence modifier, according to the BG3 Wiki Arcane Archer reference.
There is no sufficiently corroborated exact ability-score spread or full level-by-level stat plan in the cited material, so avoid treating a particular numerical spread as validated. A low-Intelligence build can still prioritize weapon attacks, but its save-based shots will be less dependable than they would be with a stronger Intelligence modifier.

Which feats and equipment should you use?
Sharpshooter
Sharpshooter is a featured choice in the published build. Its damage potential comes with an accuracy tradeoff, so weigh the attack penalty against the target’s defense and your current chance to hit. If attacks are missing too often, turn off the penalty when the feat’s toggle is available in your installed version; check the in-game feat controls, since exact interface behavior is not established here.

Titanstring Bow is one of the named equipment choices in the cited build, but the available source material does not establish a complete gear progression or show that it is the best bow for every party and encounter. Treat it as a recommended item to consider, rather than a mandatory part of the subclass.
Which Arcane Shots are worth choosing?
Arcane Archer has a limited Arcane Arrow resource. The subclass reference lists four arrows at Fighter level 3 and says the resource returns on a short or long rest; progression increases the number available and the number of shot options known. Plan to spend these shots on moments where their control or area effects matter instead of assuming they are unlimited.

Fighter level 3: subclass and Arcane Arrows
At Fighter level 3, Arcane Archer gains its subclass features and access to its limited Arcane Arrow resource. The subclass reference also lists Arcana and Nature proficiency, a choice among Guidance, Light, and True Strike, and the resource’s initial four-arrow allotment.
Fighter level 7: Magic Arrow
At Fighter level 7, Magic Arrow makes ranged attacks magical for overcoming resistance. This helps address enemies that resist nonmagical ranged attacks; it is a property of the feature, not a claim that every target will take full damage. The BG3 Wiki Magic Arrow reference describes the feature.

Is Arcane Archer better pure Fighter or multiclassed?
The cited build chooses Fighter 11 / War Cleric 1 rather than Fighter 12 because its author values the cleric dip’s bonus-action weapon attack over a fourth feat. Keep the build pure Fighter if that extra feat better supports your character or you do not want the dip. Neither choice is established as stronger in all modes.
When comparing Arcane Archer with another archer subclass, weigh the factors that change how it plays: weapon damage and attacks per turn, control and area effects, reliance on short-rest Arcane Arrows, and the extra Intelligence demand of save-based shots. The cited guide identifies Intelligence dependence as a tradeoff relative to Battle Master, but the available sources do not provide a full comparative assessment or performance figures.
Quick Recap
How to use this build without overcommitting
- Use Dexterity as the main ranged-attack priority; invest in Intelligence when you want saving-throw shots to land more often.
- Spend Arcane Arrows on control or area-damage opportunities that justify their limited supply, and account for their short- or long-rest recovery.
- Take the War Cleric dip if its bonus-action weapon attack is more useful to you than the additional Fighter feat; otherwise, consider Fighter 12.
- Check current in-game tooltips for exact shot durations, saves, and targeting rules, which can depend on the installed version.
