The best ARK server settings depend on whether your server is competitive PvP or cooperative PvE, how many hours your group can play, and which grind you want to reduce. Choose the server mode first, then tune progression, breeding, combat, protection and world difficulty as separate systems. For a small PvE group, moderate boosts to experience, taming, harvesting and breeding usually remove waiting without making resources and creatures irrelevant. A PvP server needs conservative, documented rates and explicit combat, raiding and protection rules so that every tribe understands the same game.
Choose PvP or PvE before changing any rates
PvP and PvE are server modes, not merely difficulty presets. ARK documentation describes PvE as a startup/server parameter that disables player-versus-player damage. PvP permits combat between players and attacks on opposing structures. Select and publish the mode before setting multipliers: a rate that feels comfortable in cooperative play can destabilize a competitive season.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhat PvE changes
- Players cannot damage one another under the PvE ruleset.
- Your main balancing concerns are progression speed, breeding time, resource availability, building limits and creature management.
- Moderate boosts can make a small group viable without removing the need to explore, protect tames or prepare for caves and bosses.
What PvP changes
- Player, dinosaur and structure damage become part of the economy.
- Offline raid protection, decay, tribe limits, alliances, friendly fire and PvE/PvP timers can decide whether a raid is possible.
- Every combat-related setting should be written in the server rules before a season starts. Hidden defaults are a common source of disputes.
Set the main settings axes independently
Do not search for one “best” multiplier. Configure each axis according to the experience you want. The same server can use fast taming but slow breeding, or quick harvesting but normal XP, if that combination suits the group.
| Axis | Settings involved | PvE priority | PvP priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Progression speed | XP, harvesting, taming, hatching, maturation and imprinting | Remove repetitive waiting while keeping exploration and resource choices meaningful. | Keep progression fast enough for a season but slow enough that losses and raids matter. |
| Combat economy | Player, dinosaur and structure damage or resistance; turret and structure rules; friendly fire | Protect builders and preserve boss preparation. | Define the damage model and prevent one multiplier from making bases or tames disposable. |
| Risk and protection | PvE/PvP timers, offline raid protection, decay, tribe and alliance limits | Prevent abandoned structures from blocking the map. | Make raid windows, defenses and tribe size predictable. |
| World progression | Difficulty, wild-dinosaur levels, loot quality, cave and boss preparation | Match the server’s intended challenge. | Test the loot economy and wild levels before a competitive season. |
| Administration | GameUserSettings.ini, Game.ini, startup parameters, backups, restarts, mods and support | Make safe adjustments without wiping progress. | Make rules auditable and recoverable after an exploit or configuration error. |
A balanced PvE preset for solo players and small groups
Host/Local Settings expose the controls most private groups need: XP multiplier, difficulty, taming speed, harvest amount, player, dinosaur and structure resistance, loot quality, imprint timers, maturation, hatch speed and related options. There is no official universal PvE preset. Use the following as a practical starting point, then change only the bottleneck that is frustrating your group.

Recommended starting values
These are editorial starting points rather than official rates. Apply them to a new or backed-up save, observe a complete taming and breeding cycle, and adjust in small steps.
| Setting | Starting point for a small PvE group | Why | When to lower or raise it |
|---|---|---|---|
| XP multiplier | About 1.5x–2x | Levels arrive regularly without skipping the early engrams and map progression. | Raise it if players repeatedly outlevel available resources; lower it if unlocks arrive before the group explores. |
| Taming speed | About 3x | Long tame timers are shortened while food, narcotics and creature selection still matter. | Raise it for a casual schedule; lower it if high-value creatures feel disposable. |
| Harvest amount | About 2x | Building and ammunition require fewer trips without making every node effectively unlimited. | Raise it for a large build team; lower it if storage fills faster than decisions can be made. |
| Egg hatch speed | About 3x–5x | Eggs become a project that can fit into a play session. | Raise it only when the group can still provide the required food and temperature management. |
| Maturation speed | About 3x–5x | Juvenile care remains important but does not require continuous overnight supervision. | Lower it if imprinting becomes impossible to complete; raise it if raising a creature is still the group’s dominant chore. |
| Imprinting | Keep cuddle intervals compatible with the chosen maturation speed | Imprint bonuses should reward regular care rather than demand an unrealistic schedule. | Test one complete raise before changing the interval or imprint amount. |
| Loot quality | Start near the default and increase cautiously | Better drops can replace crafting and boss preparation too quickly. | Raise it only after checking that blueprints do not trivialize the intended progression. |
Preserve the decisions that make PvE interesting
- Keep resource scarcity high enough that metal, polymer, ammunition and building locations still require planning.
- Do not increase XP, taming, harvesting and breeding by the same amount automatically. If taming is the only bottleneck, change taming rather than accelerating the entire game.
- Leave player, dinosaur and structure resistance near the default until you have a specific problem. Resistance changes can make a cave, boss or environmental hazard unexpectedly harmless.
- Use a separate backup before changing difficulty or loot quality. These settings can alter the progression curve for every future session.
A defensible PvP preset and rules checklist
PvP settings should be conservative until the server has completed a test season. A competitive server is balanced by the relationship between rates, defenses and time zones, not by any single multiplier.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Use a modest XP increase so new tribes can reach the intended tier without erasing the value of early-game territory.
- Choose taming and harvesting rates that support recovery after a raid but do not let a tribe replace an entire stable immediately.
- Keep breeding and hatching fast enough for a season schedule, then publish the exact rates and imprint rules. A hidden breeding advantage is effectively a rules change.
- Decide whether loot quality should create a long-term chase or provide predictable equipment. Test drops on a fresh save before opening the server.
Combat and structure rules to document
- Player damage and resistance.
- Dinosaur damage and resistance.
- Structure damage and resistance, including whether structures can be damaged during protected periods.
- Friendly fire inside a tribe and any exception for specific creatures or weapons.
- Turret limits, structure limits and ammunition expectations if your hosting configuration exposes them.
- Decay timers and what happens to abandoned bases.
- Offline raid protection, its activation delay and its release conditions.
- Tribe member limits, alliance limits and whether alliances may participate in raids.
- PvE/PvP timer behavior around transfers, events or map-specific zones.
Write these rules in one public document and repeat the effective date after every configuration change. If a setting cannot be verified by players or administrators, treat it as a risk to the season rather than an assumed default.
Difficulty, wild-dinosaur levels and loot quality
Difficulty is a progression choice, not simply a combat slider. The ARK Difficulty documentation explains that higher difficulty values make higher-tier items and blueprints appear more frequently. Loot quality is adjustable separately, so changing one does not automatically produce the result you want from the other.
Use OverrideOfficialDifficulty deliberately
OverrideOfficialDifficulty changes the default difficulty curve. Because the resulting wild-dinosaur level distribution and loot economy depend on the rest of the configuration, do not announce a competitive season immediately after editing it. Apply the setting to a test save, spawn or observe enough wild creatures to verify the intended level range, and inspect several loot sources.

Test the complete progression loop
- Start a fresh test save with the planned difficulty and loot settings.
- Check wild creatures in more than one region, including a dangerous area where higher levels should matter.
- Collect ordinary drops and higher-tier containers; record whether the quality matches your intended crafting and boss schedule.
- Attempt the early cave or resource milestone that new players will face.
- Have an administrator confirm that the setting persists after a restart before copying it to the live server.
Do not promise a specific maximum level merely because an override value was entered. The reliable result is the level distribution you observe on the configured map and save.
GameUserSettings.ini and Game.ini: what belongs where
Most dedicated-server hosts expose a text editor, a configuration form or both. The exact file path varies by host and platform, but the workflow is consistent: stop the server, back up the files and save, edit the appropriate section, start the server, then verify in game.
GameUserSettings.ini
Use this file for player-facing server options and many multipliers. A typical section is [ServerSettings]. Common keys include:
[ServerSettings]
XPMultiplier=2.0
TamingSpeedMultiplier=3.0
HarvestAmountMultiplier=2.0
DinoHarvestingDamageMultiplier=1.0
PlayerCharacterWaterDrainMultiplier=1.0
DinoCharacterFoodDrainMultiplier=1.0
DinoEgg hatchSpeedMultiplier=3.0
Key spelling and available options can vary by ARK edition and host interface, so use the labels generated by your control panel when possible. The sample values are illustrative PvE starting points, not official defaults. Remove any line your edition does not recognize rather than assuming a typo will be ignored safely.
Game.ini
Use Game.ini for deeper gameplay overrides and custom rules that are not exposed in the basic settings screen. Keep a dated copy before each change. A malformed line can prevent the server from starting or silently leave the old value active.

Safe editing procedure
- Stop the server completely; do not edit while it is writing a save.
- Download or copy
GameUserSettings.ini,Game.iniand the current world save. - Record the server mode, map, difficulty override and every rate in a change log.
- Edit one group of related settings at a time, preserving section headers and exact key names.
- Start the server and watch the startup log for parse errors.
- Join with an administrator account and test XP, harvesting, taming or breeding according to the change.
- If anything is wrong, stop the server, restore the backup and restart before players invest more time.
How to tune rates without wiping the save
Most multipliers can be changed on an existing save, but the player experience may change immediately. A creature already being tamed, an egg already incubating or a baby already maturing may retain part of its previous timing. Treat a rate change as a live rule change, announce it, and test one in-progress activity before promising the new result.
Use bottleneck-based adjustments
- If players spend an entire evening waiting for a tame, change taming speed only.
- If construction is the problem, adjust harvest amount rather than XP.
- If breeding is the problem, adjust hatch or maturation and then verify that imprint windows remain achievable.
- If players reach endgame before exploring, lower XP or improve the availability of exploration goals instead of increasing every other rate.
When a wipe is justified
A wipe is usually unnecessary for a small rate correction. Consider a fresh season only when difficulty, wild-level distribution, loot quality or a major combat rule was wrong from the beginning and existing characters or blueprints would gain an irreversible advantage. Announce the reason, preserve an archive of the old save and publish the new configuration before the restart.
Official-rate anchors for comparison
Named official configurations provide useful reference points, but they are not automatically the best private-server settings. The ARK Official Community Wiki’s current table, crawled in 2026, lists these examples:
| Official configuration | Published rates or limits | How to use the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Official | 1x baseline | Use as the reference when describing how far a private server departs from official progression. |
| Small Tribes | 2x breeding, hatching and raising; 3x experience, taming and gathering | Useful anchor for a faster server with a limited tribe population. |
| Beginner | 1x official rates; level-44 player cap; level-30 wild-dinosaur cap; five-player tribes; no alliances | Shows that a slower-rate ruleset can also change caps and social structure. |
These are named official examples, not a guarantee that your map, edition or private configuration will behave identically. State the edition and current configuration whenever you compare your server with them.
Administration, hosting and platform checks
A dedicated server needs configurable startup parameters and editable rates. Before choosing a host, confirm that you can set the PvE/PvP mode, edit GameUserSettings.ini and Game.ini, restart on demand, download backups and review logs. A one-click “easy” preset is useful only if it exposes the controls your rules require.

Console and edition compatibility
Nintendo’s official product page lists an ARK: Survival Evolved Nintendo Switch game card edition and describes taming, breeding, crafting and online play. PlayStation and Xbox also list ARK editions with multiplayer support. Dedicated-server controls, mod availability and configuration access differ by platform, so verify the country, edition and current stock or service support before promising that a particular setting or hosting workflow is available on console.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common configuration failures
The server starts in the wrong mode
Check the startup/server parameter or hosting-panel mode first, then confirm that no map-specific profile is overriding it. Restart fully and test player damage with consenting administrators. Do not attempt to fix a mode problem by changing damage multipliers.
Recommended Free Tools
Rates appear unchanged
Confirm that the server was stopped before editing, that the line is in the correct file and section, and that the host did not regenerate the file from a saved preset. Check the startup log and perform a controlled test, such as harvesting one identical node before and after the restart.
Breeding becomes impossible after a speed increase
Fast maturation can produce cuddle intervals that are shorter than a normal play session. Lower maturation or adjust imprint timing, then raise one creature from egg to adult on the test save before applying the change to live players.
Loot or wild levels feel wrong
Difficulty and loot quality are separate controls. Recheck both values, test multiple regions and drops on a fresh save, and verify persistence after a restart. Do not judge the setting from one creature or one container.

A bad edit prevents startup
Stop the server, restore the last known-good files, start again and compare the change log line by line. Keep the broken files for diagnosis, but never experiment on the only copy of a live save.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the same rates for PvP and PvE?
You can, but the result will not feel the same. PvP adds combat losses, raiding and protection windows, so rates that are comfortable in PvE may make replacement gear or tames too easy to obtain.
Do I need to wipe after changing XP, taming or harvesting?
Usually no. Back up first, announce the change and test an in-progress activity. A fresh season is more appropriate when difficulty, loot distribution or a major combat rule created an irreversible advantage.
Why should difficulty be tested on a fresh save?
Difficulty and loot quality affect the future wild-creature and item economy. A fresh test reveals the intended level distribution and drop quality before existing characters and blueprints obscure the result.
