Self-hosting: the sixth route for hands-on administrators
Self-hosting is not a commercial provider, but it is a genuine alternative if you want direct control and can take responsibility for operation. Bohemia’s server-hosting documentation distinguishes player-hosted servers from dedicated servers. It defines a dedicated server as “a server without any game instance launched; it purely processes game information and network synchronisation.” That means the dedicated server is separate from a player’s game session.
Bohemia’s documentation says public access to a locally hosted server requires port forwarding. Its Arma Reforger support page also confirms dedicated-server tools and hosting locally or through third-party providers. In practice, a self-hosted setup shifts the work of providing compute, configuring networking, applying patches, securing the system, handling backups, and maintaining the server onto you.
