Baldur’s Gate 3 rewards curiosity more than a perfect build. Read your abilities, inspect what is happening, experiment with the world, and let your party adapt as you learn. These 55 spoiler-free tips are practical starting points—not rules you must follow or a prescribed route through the story.

Version note: Larian called Patch 8, released in 2025, the game’s final major content patch. Its news page listed Hotfix 36, dated March 26, 2026, as the latest hotfix when checked for this guide. Minor fixes may still appear, so consult Larian’s news page for current updates.

Choose a character and party that suit you

Character creation

  1. Start with a character concept. Choose a personality, fantasy, or play style you would enjoy inhabiting. You do not need to identify the strongest possible build before starting.
  2. Pick a class whose actions sound fun. If you like magic, stealth, conversation, or direct combat, use that preference to guide your choice.
  3. Read the class description and ability tooltips. They explain what your character can do and help you make sense of unfamiliar terms.
  4. Do not treat a guide’s build as mandatory. Recommendations reflect particular preferences; they are not proof that other choices cannot work.
  5. Choose a difficulty that feels comfortable. A lower-pressure start is a valid way to learn, and a tougher setting may suit players who want more challenge.
  6. Adjust your approach if the game stops being fun. Difficulty is a tool for shaping your experience, not a test of skill.
  7. Give your character a social approach as well as a combat one. You will encounter situations where talking, investigating, or choosing how to respond matters.
  8. Make choices that fit your role-play. You are not required to select every option that seems tactically advantageous.
  9. Take time with character creation, but do not chase perfection. A coherent character idea is a better starting point than trying to solve every future encounter in advance.
  10. Remember that your first character is an experiment. Learning what you enjoy is part of the point of a first run.

Companions and party roles

  1. Use companion classes as a first clue, not a complete job description. Larian identifies Astarion as a Rogue, Gale as a Wizard, Lae’zel as a Fighter, and Shadowheart as a Cleric on its official character pages.
  2. Inspect a companion’s abilities and equipment. Class identity helps orient you, but it does not tell you every useful action or determine a single fixed role.
  3. Try different party combinations. There is no requirement to keep the same lineup for the whole adventure.
  4. Think about coverage rather than a “best” party. Consider whether you want characters suited to direct combat, support, exploration, or social skills.
  5. Bring someone whose perspective interests you. Companions can make the journey feel different through their personalities and reactions.
  6. Check party status before a difficult stretch. Look over health, available abilities, and equipment so you know what your group can currently do.
  7. Talk to companions at camp. Conversations can reveal character, context, and how they feel about events.
  8. Do not assume a companion must stay in one role. Reassess their options as you learn their abilities and find equipment.

Learn combat by reading the situation

  1. Read the action bar before choosing an attack. Check what each available action does and whether it fits the moment.
  2. Hover over unfamiliar abilities. Tooltips are often the quickest way to understand an effect, range, or requirement.
  3. Inspect enemies when you can. Information about an opponent may help you choose a more sensible target or tactic.
  4. Look at the battlefield before acting. Notice enemies, allies, obstacles, hazards, and possible routes through the area.
  5. Consider movement before spending your turn. A better position may be more valuable than repeating the same attack.
  6. Pay attention to elevation and cover. The environment can affect what options look sensible; experiment rather than assuming every fight is a flat exchange.
  7. Use hazards when they help. Environmental features can create opportunities, but judge the risk to your own party too.
  8. Try consumables instead of saving everything forever. If an item seems useful for the problem in front of you, consider using it.
  9. Switch tactics when an approach is failing. Change targets, reposition, use another ability, or look for an environmental option.
  10. Check what an action costs before confirming it. Knowing what you are committing helps avoid wasting an opportunity.
  11. Use the whole party. Consider each character’s available actions instead of relying on one favorite attacker.
  12. Give support abilities a look. Healing, protection, control, or other utility may help more than another attempt to deal damage.
  13. Watch for friendly-fire risks. Before using an area effect or interacting with a hazard, check where allies are standing.
  14. Do not be afraid to retreat from a bad position. Repositioning can be a useful choice when a character is exposed or boxed in.
  15. Try dialogue before a fight when it makes sense. A conversation may change the situation, but it is not a guaranteed substitute for combat.
  16. Experiment with interactions around the encounter. Objects and the environment may offer alternatives worth investigating.
  17. After a tough fight, consider what you learned. Notice which abilities helped, what left someone vulnerable, and whether a different opening might work next time.

Explore deliberately and keep your options open

  1. Look beyond the obvious route. Side paths and tucked-away areas can reward a curious approach.
  2. Speak with people you meet. Dialogue can provide context, choices, or clues that are easy to miss if you rush past.
  3. Inspect objects that catch your attention. Not every interaction is essential, but investigating can uncover useful details.
  4. Return to a location if you gain new context. A later conversation or discovery may change what you want to investigate.
  5. Read quest and journal updates. They help you keep track of what your character knows and what you might want to pursue.
  6. Let curiosity set the pace. You can follow the main objective or spend time exploring; neither approach is mandatory.
  7. Save before a risky encounter or consequential choice. A manual save gives you a practical fallback if you want to revisit the decision.
  8. Save regularly, not only when a prompt reminds you. Treat it as a habit that protects your progress, not as a guarantee that every outcome can be undone.
  9. Use separate saves if you want room to reconsider. Keeping more than one point to return to can be useful when exploring different choices.
  10. Do not click through dialogue automatically. Read the available responses and consider what each one says about your character.
  11. Accept that choices can have consequences. Saving can preserve options, but it does not make every decision consequence-free.

Manage rests, camp, and your pace

  1. Use the game’s prompts and your party’s condition to guide rest decisions. Avoid relying on a universal rest schedule.
  2. Check your party’s resources before pressing on. See which abilities and supplies are available, then decide whether to continue or pause.
  3. Visit camp and speak with companions when you want to check in. These conversations help you follow their stories without needing a rigid cadence.
  4. Read rest-related prompts carefully. Let the game’s own instructions guide your choices rather than assuming a particular supply cost or story trigger.
  5. Take a break when you need one. The adventure is long-form role-playing, not a race to clear objectives.
  6. Keep your own notes if you like having a reminder. A brief note about a name, clue, or unfinished goal can help if you pause for a while.

Set up your game and multiplayer expectations

  1. Check system requirements for your operating system before installing. Larian lists separate Windows and macOS requirements on its system requirements page; the listed storage requirement is 150 GB for each, and the page says an SSD is required. Requirements can change, so verify the live page for your platform.
  2. Know what Patch 8 added if you plan to play with friends. Larian says the patch added cross-play for PC, Mac, Xbox, and PlayStation 5, as well as Photo Mode and 12 new subclasses. Read the Patch 8 announcement for its platform and feature details.
  3. Coordinate mods before starting a cross-play multiplayer session. Larian says lobby participants using mods need the same mod set; its official mod-support FAQ specifies that multiplayer players need the exact same mods at the same version.
  4. Check console mod limitations before planning a modded game. Larian’s Patch 8 announcement says third-party mods cannot be used on consoles and notes a console mod limit of 100.
  5. Do not assume every mod tool is available on every platform. Larian says its Toolkit is PC-only; its mod-support FAQ lists 160 GB of available space as a Toolkit requirement.

For official edition information, Larian’s site lists Standard, Digital Deluxe, and Physical Deluxe editions. Availability and included items can vary; check the current listing for your region at the official game site.
