For a stealth-focused Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, a strong choice is Gloom Stalker Ranger 5 / Assassin Rogue 7. It pairs a powerful opening round with stealth and encounter setup. If you would rather have a steadier rhythm that does not depend as much on surprise, keep Astarion as a Rogue and choose Thief. Neither route is universally best: the right build depends on how you like to start fights and what role your party needs.
Choose a build by how you want Astarion to fight
| Build | Best suited to | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Gloom Stalker Ranger 5 / Assassin Rogue 7 | Stealth openings and burst in the first round | Rewards encounter setup and stealth; multiclassing adds complexity |
| Thief Rogue | Consistent attacks and utility over successive turns | Less centered on an ambush opening than Assassin |
| Arcane Trickster Rogue | Players who want magic and utility alongside Rogue play | Different role from a dedicated opening-round damage build |
| Swashbuckler Rogue | Players interested in Patch 8’s additional Rogue subclass | Its exact features and fit depend on game version and installed mods |
These are qualitative play-style distinctions, not controlled damage rankings. Published recommendations do not establish a universal damage-per-second comparison across difficulty settings, equipment, party compositions, or player execution.

Best for stealth burst: Gloom Stalker 5 / Assassin 7
PC Gamer’s September 2026 Patch 8 guide recommends five levels of Gloom Stalker Ranger and seven levels of Assassin Rogue for a sneaky character built to make the opening round count. Gloom Stalker contributes increased initiative and an opening-round attack; Assassin brings advantages in the first round, including critical hits against surprised enemies. The synergy is most useful when you can approach from stealth and choose how an encounter begins.
How to play the build
- Look for a safe way to begin combat from stealth when the situation allows.
- Use the initiative and opening-round benefits to concentrate attacks before the fight settles into ordinary turns.
- Do not assume every encounter can be surprised or safely approached from stealth; the build’s signature opening is conditional.
The guide names the Knife of the Undermountain King as a useful weapon for much of the campaign. For late-game piercing vulnerability, it points to Bhaalist Armour or the Bloodthirst dagger. Bhaalist Armour is described as the more optimal option, but obtaining it is tied to an evil story choice; a risky pickpocket route is also mentioned. These are in-game equipment and story-path considerations, so choose based on the run you want to play.
#1 Best Overall
- Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
- Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
- Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
- Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
Best for a steadier rhythm: Thief Rogue
If you want Astarion to remain a Rogue without making the whole plan hinge on surprise, Thief is a reasonable alternative. A creator’s level 1–12 build guide recommends Thief for consistent attacks and utility. That is a build recommendation, not an official balance verdict or a guarantee of higher damage in every party.
Choose this route when you prefer a straightforward single-class progression and want useful turns beyond the first ambush. It is also the simpler answer if you are unsure whether you want to manage a multiclass build.

Is Assassin better as a pure Rogue or as a multiclass?
For the specific stealth-burst approach, the cited Patch 8 recommendation is the multiclass split of Gloom Stalker Ranger 5 / Assassin Rogue 7. Assassin as a pure Rogue is a separate option for players who want Assassin’s ambush identity while keeping Rogue progression simpler. The available recommendations do not establish that one choice wins in every situation: the multiclass is aimed at a prepared opening, while a single-class route avoids splitting progression across classes.
Baldur’s Gate 3 supports multiclassing, but the total class and subclass counts in Larian’s announcement-era material are historical and should not be treated as current totals. Patch 8 added Swashbuckler; check your game version and installed mods before relying on exact subclass features.

How to make Astarion a better archer
The stealth-burst build above is a viable direction for a ranged Astarion if you like to open from stealth and capitalize on the first round. It is not a separate, tested “best archer” ranking: the cited sources do not provide controlled comparisons of ranged damage across builds, gear, difficulty, or party setups. Decide first whether you want an archer who specializes in ambush burst or one whose turns feel more consistent; the Assassin multiclass favors the former, while Thief is a reasonable choice for the latter.
Which Astarion build should you choose?
- Pick Gloom Stalker 5 / Assassin 7 if you enjoy stealth, setting up encounters, and making the first round decisive.
- Pick Thief Rogue if you want consistent attacks and utility without centering your plan on surprise.
- Consider Arcane Trickster if you want a Rogue with a stronger magic-and-utility emphasis.
- Consider Swashbuckler if you are playing Patch 8 and want to explore its added Rogue subclass; verify the features in your version and mod setup.
Astarion is a recruitable companion and Origin character whose default class is Rogue, making Rogue a natural starting point. Respec or multiclass choices let you specialize him, but they are options rather than requirements.
