For a conventional H.264 YouTube stream, start by testing RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and 1080p at 30 fps with a 14 Mbps video bitrate. If your production connection cannot reliably sustain that profile, test 720p30 at 8 Mbps instead. These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not an India-specific preset or a guarantee of uninterrupted service. Astra’s channel controls and YouTube’s encoder settings do different jobs, so the right setup depends on how your Astra installation is connected to YouTube.
Choose the YouTube output profile first
YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate depends on the output resolution and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube’s published recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026; they are not measurements of a particular Indian internet provider or channel.

For a news channel, weigh picture detail against the motion you show and the upload connection you can sustain continuously. Do not select a bitrate from a different resolution, frame rate, or codec column. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video codec options, but the table above is specifically for H.264. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings before launch because platform guidance can change.
Set the encoder parameters YouTube expects
- Protocol: Use RTMPS for secure delivery, as YouTube recommends.
- Rate control: Choose CBR. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate encoding.
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. For stereo it specifies 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps; for 5.1 audio it specifies 48 kHz and 384 Kbps.
- SDR color: Use Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth.
The exact controls and labels depend on the encoder that actually sends the feed to YouTube. The Astra documentation does not establish a universal direct YouTube RTMPS route or a field-by-field YouTube profile, so do not treat these recommendations as a verified Astra preset.

Understand which settings belong to Astra
Cesbo describes Astra as software that receives media from sources, processes channel flows, and delivers them to clients. Its stream and global controls govern Astra’s own channel behavior; they do not replace settings in the YouTube encoder or relay in your chain. On-demand and keep-active behavior
Astra’s general settings provide global defaults unless an individual stream overrides them. Relevant options include “Start stream on demand” and “HTTP Keep Active.” Astra’s documentation says a default HTTP Keep Active value of zero turns a channel off immediately when its last client closes the session. For a continuous design, verify that demand-start and keep-active behavior fits the actual source and output workflow. Saving general settings restarts Astra, so account for that restart when scheduling a change.

Monitoring and backup delays
Advanced stream settings include “Enable monitoring,” on-demand start, and “Keep Active.” Astra says it waits for an incoming request to start a stream when on-demand mode is enabled, and notes that on-demand start is turned off for channels with UDP or HLS outputs. Confirm the stream type and output before relying on those controls. Check any configured backup source and its start and return delays; the appropriate values depend on the source design, and the documentation does not establish one best delay for every channel.
Because Astra version and output path are unspecified, there is no responsible universal set of Astra menu values to prescribe. Establish whether Astra is the source receiver, a relay, or one component in a separate encoder chain, then apply YouTube’s output recommendations to the encoder that actually ingests to YouTube.

Test the whole chain before a continuous broadcast
- Choose the format: Select codec, resolution, and frame rate in the YouTube-bound encoder, then use the matching bitrate recommendation.
- Measure the actual connection: Run an upload-speed test from the production location. The connection must sustain the configured stream over time; no single bitrate is established as reliable across Indian providers and regions.
- Run a representative test: Test the real encoder and production connection with representative audio and motion. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Watch stream health: YouTube recommends monitoring stream health. Its Live Streaming API status values include ready, active, inactive, created, and error; health warnings include low video bitrate and video ingestion starvation, which signal that YouTube is not receiving enough video for smooth streaming.
- Check Astra separately: Monitor Astra and inspect configured backup-source behavior. Healthy YouTube ingestion does not prove the Astra source itself is healthy.
- Align redundant feeds: If you use primary and backup ingestion streams, keep their configurations aligned. YouTube’s API health documentation identifies differences in frame rate, keyframe frequency, codec, and bitrate as configuration issues.
- Protect the stream key: Treat it as a credential: YouTube uses it to identify where the encoder sends the feed and to accept that feed. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
For a continuously running news channel, set an alerting and human response process around the health checks; a bitrate recommendation alone cannot prevent source, encoder, or network outages.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube reports low bitrate: Confirm that the encoder is set to the selected profile’s bitrate and CBR, then check whether the production upload connection can sustain it. If not, test a lower-resolution profile with its matching recommendation.
- Video ingestion starvation: YouTube is not receiving video fast enough for smooth streaming. Check the encoder output, source continuity, and network path rather than changing Astra’s bitrate controls without identifying which component sends the feed.
- Backup feed has a configuration warning: Compare primary and backup codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate; align mismatches.
- Astra channel stops when a client disconnects: Review HTTP Keep Active and on-demand settings at the global and individual stream levels, and confirm whether the selected output type supports the behavior you expect.
- Astra appears healthy but YouTube is not receiving a stable feed: Inspect the separate encoder or relay and the complete path to YouTube. Astra monitoring and YouTube stream health observe different parts of the chain.
- The stream key no longer works or may be exposed: Reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and replace the key in the encoder.
Keep the channel eligible and rights-cleared
Settings cannot resolve copyright or channel-policy problems. Before scheduling a 24/7 news feed, verify that you have rights to the footage, music, graphics, and other material in the loop, and review YouTube’s live-stream and monetization policies for your channel. Reusing the same content continuously does not itself establish that the channel qualifies for monetization; eligibility depends on YouTube’s policies and review.
