For a standard stereo rain-and-birdsong stream sent to YouTube Live over RTMP or RTMPS, use AAC, 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps, stereo. YouTube also accepts MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS, but its published guidance does not show that AAC sounds better for nature ambience. This is a compatibility-focused default, not the result of a rain-and-birdsong codec test.

These are YouTube Help’s current live-encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026. They are platform settings, not evidence that one codec is more pleasant for rain or birdsong. YouTube transcodes a live feed into multiple output formats for viewers, so the creator’s priority is a compatible, stable feed rather than encoding a separate version for every device. AAC or MP3 for YouTube Live ambience?
For ordinary stereo RTMP/RTMPS, either AAC or MP3 is accepted. Choosing AAC at YouTube’s stereo recommendation of 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps is a straightforward default; the official guidance does not establish an audible advantage for AAC on rain or birdsong. If an existing encoder workflow reliably supplies MP3, the codec alone is not a reason to assume the stream is unsuitable.
RTMP/RTMPS versus HLS
The ingestion protocol affects which audio formats YouTube accepts and how the feed is delivered. For a typical stereo ambience stream, either protocol can use AAC; choose based on what your encoder and production workflow support.

For non-interactive rain and birdsong, the added HLS latency may not matter to listeners, but there is no 24/7-specific audio format in YouTube’s cited guidance. If your encoder uses HLS, AAC remains an available choice.
Make a 24/7 stream reliable
Test the actual program material
Before relying on a long-running broadcast, test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Listen for clipping, silence, abrupt level changes, unwanted gaps, and whether the rain or birdsong remains clear at the intended listening level. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health rather than assuming a setting is correct because the encoder accepts it. YouTube streaming tips.

Leave bandwidth headroom
YouTube’s network guidance recommends about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total streaming bitrate. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee against interruptions. A connection disruption can break delivery regardless of whether the audio is AAC or MP3. Monitor stream health and review any encoder or YouTube warnings during the test.
Allow time to enable live streaming
YouTube notes that enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. A new channel should complete activation and testing before scheduling a continuous stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance is available at Get started with live streaming.
