The best Fallout 76 backpack for most players is the Standard Backpack once you unlock it: it can add up to 60 Carry Weight at level 50. The Small Backpack is the quicker early option, with half the Standard Backpack’s capacity. Both are in-game equipment—not real-world packs—and either can be given an appearance skin without changing its Carry Weight.
Small vs. Standard Backpack: which should you choose?
Choose the Small Backpack if you want an early Carry Weight boost without completing the Pioneer Scouts progression. Work toward the Standard Backpack if you want the larger base capacity and are willing to reach Possum rank. Bethesda lists the Small Backpack at half the capacity of a Standard Backpack at the corresponding crafting level.

| Backpack | How to get it | Base Carry Weight | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small Vault-Tec Survival Backpack | Received when leaving Vault 76, according to Bethesda Support. | +5 Carry Weight for the starting Small Vault-Tec Survival Backpack; Small Backpack capacity is half the Standard Backpack’s at each listed level. | Immediate, modest capacity boost. |
| Small Backpack | Learn its plan from a cache at the Overseer’s C.A.M.P. near the Wayward, according to Bethesda Support. | Half the Standard Backpack’s capacity at the corresponding level. | Early access without the Standard Backpack unlock. |
| Standard Backpack | Join the Pioneer Scouts and reach Possum rank, according to Bethesda Support. | Level-based; see the table below. | Higher base Carry Weight as you level the item. |
Players sometimes ask whether the Pioneer Scouts quest is required to get a “normal size” pack. The useful distinction is that the Small Backpack has its own plan at the Overseer’s C.A.M.P.; the Standard Backpack is the one tied to Pioneer Scouts progression.
How much Carry Weight does the Standard Backpack add?
Bethesda’s support article lists these Standard Backpack bonuses by backpack level. The level refers to the crafted backpack, not a separate bonus for completing another quest.

How to apply a backpack skin
A skin changes the backpack’s appearance; it does not increase Carry Weight. Bethesda says skins are applied from an Armor Workbench and may be unlocked through quests, events, or the Atomic Shop. Small Backpacks can also use skins, as confirmed in Update 19 notes from May 19, 2020.
- Go to an Armor Workbench.
- Choose the backpack in the modify menu.
- Select an unlocked appearance and apply it.
Bethesda’s Patch 9 notes from May 7, 2019 describe skins as appearance options, separate from functional modifications. The cited sources do not establish a complete current skin inventory or Atomic Shop rotation, so a particular skin’s availability may vary.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why your backpack may not appear
- Power Armor: The backpack is unequipped when you enter Power Armor. Bethesda’s Patch 9 notes say it is “unequipped when you step into a set of Power Armor.”
- Outfits with built-in backpack visuals: Some outfits can hide the functional backpack’s appearance. Its functional benefits remain, according to Bethesda’s Patch 9 notes.
Backpack mods and capacity tradeoffs
Appearance skins and functional mods do different jobs: skins alter the look, while mods add utility. Bethesda’s 2019 Patch 9 notes cite damage reduction and food refrigeration as examples of utility mods and warn that mods may reduce storage capacity. Those historical notes do not provide a complete current mod catalog or prove which option is best now, so check the in-game effect and capacity shown for the mod you are considering.
