For most players, Blue Deck is the safest all-around pick; Plasma Deck has the highest scoring ceiling if you can manage its tougher Blind scaling. Red, Yellow, and Green are also strong choices for a first run, depending on whether you value extra discards, starting cash, or predictable payouts. No deck is officially the best: each changes the run in a different way, and no comparable win-rate data establishes a universal ranking.
How this ranking works
This is a practical ranking of Balatro’s 15 standard decks, weighing early-run forgiveness, scoring potential, economy, consistency, opportunity cost, and unlock accessibility. It is a strategic comparison of their listed mechanics—not a measured win-rate ordering. Balatro HQ’s guide places Plasma and Black in its S tier, but that is one guide’s editorial judgment, not an official ranking or proof that either deck is best for every player.

The available version information does not establish whether a later update had released by October 8, 2026, so this ranking does not label the listed mechanics as the latest version.

1. Blue Deck — best all-around and beginner pick
Effect: one extra hand each round. Unlock: reach 20 items in your collection. The additional hand gives you another chance to find a scoring combination or recover when a draw goes poorly, without imposing a direct penalty. That makes Blue a forgiving choice while you learn how hands, scoring, and builds fit together.
#1 Best Overall
- 150 Jokers, each with their own unique abilities.
- 15 Decks with distinct modifiers to choose from for each run.
- 5 potential variants of each Joker which add further abilities.
- 22 Tarot cards variants that can enhance your regular playing cards.
- 11 Planet cards that help level up your possible poker hands.
2. Yellow Deck — best for a flexible start
Effect: extra starting money. Unlock: reach 50 items in your collection. Cash gives you more room to make early shop choices and pursue a build, although the listed effect does not guarantee a particular Joker or outcome. Choose Yellow when you want options rather than a scoring bonus tied to a specific strategy.
3. Red Deck — best for extra chances to shape a draw
Effect: one extra discard each round. Unlock: available from the start. An extra discard can help you search for a hand that works with your plan, but it does not add a scoring hand. Red is an accessible choice for players who value draw flexibility.
4. Green Deck — best for a steady payout rhythm
Effect: round-end payouts, with no interest. Unlock: reach 75 items in your collection. Its payout structure is an alternative to interest-based economy: you receive the deck’s end-of-round benefit, but cannot earn interest. It suits players who prefer a predictable payout tradeoff over saving for interest.

- 5 potential variants of each Joker which add further abilities

5. Plasma Deck — best scoring ceiling, with a scaling cost
Effect: balances Chips and Mult for played-hand scoring; base Blind size is doubled. Unlock: win on Blue Stake or harder. Plasma’s scoring mechanic can support an impressive ceiling, which helps explain why Balatro HQ rates it S tier. But doubled base Blind size raises the requirement you must beat. Its potential is not a free advantage: you need to build enough scoring to meet the larger target.
6. Ghost Deck — best for a Spectral-focused plan
Effect: Spectral cards can appear in shops, and the deck starts with Hex. Unlock: win a run with a Red Deck. These advantages open a specialized route from the start, rather than offering a general bonus for every strategy. Pick Ghost when you want to build around Spectral-card opportunities.
7. Magic Deck — best for early Tarot access
Effect: starts with Crystal Ball and two Fools. Unlock: win a run with a Red Deck. The starting items offer a tailored opening, but they do not make every run equally suited to Magic. It is a useful option when you are comfortable making choices around its supplied resources.

8. Black Deck — powerful late, punishing early
Effect: one additional Joker slot, but one fewer hand each round. Unlock: reach 100 items in your collection. The lost hand makes early rounds harder, while the extra slot can raise the late-game scoring ceiling if you survive and have a Joker worth placing there. The Balatro Wiki’s Black Deck strategy notes discuss this early difficulty and later upside. Black is a high-risk choice, not a straightforward upgrade.

Effect: starts with Telescope and loses one consumable slot. Unlock: win a run with a Blue Deck. The starting Telescope supports a specialized approach, but the reduced consumable capacity is a real constraint on flexibility. Choose Nebula if that tradeoff fits the build you intend to pursue.
10. Abandoned Deck — best for players who want a leaner deck
Effect: starts without face cards. Unlock: win a run with a Green Deck. Removing face cards changes what you can draw and how you plan hands; it is a deck-composition challenge, not a general-purpose bonus.

11. Checkered Deck — best for a consistent suit emphasis
Effect: starts with only Spades and Hearts. Unlock: win a run with a Black Deck. A fixed suit composition supports planning around those suits, but narrows the starting deck’s variety. Its appeal is consistency for a particular approach rather than broad flexibility.
12. Painted Deck — best if you value hand size over Joker space
Effect: increases hand size by two and reduces the number of Joker slots by one. Unlock: win a run with a Yellow Deck. The larger hand offers more cards to work with, but you have less room for Jokers. It is a clear trade: more choices in hand for a smaller Joker capacity.

13. Anaglyph Deck — best for a run built around Double Tags
Effect: starts with a Double Tag. Unlock: win a run with a Black Deck. Its value depends on how well you can use the tag mechanic and the opportunities the run presents. That makes it less predictable than a fixed extra hand or a direct starting-cash advantage.

14. Erratic Deck — best for players who welcome variance
Effect: randomizes the ranks and suits in the deck. Unlock: win a run with a Yellow Deck. The randomized composition can create unusual starts, but it makes repeatable planning harder. Pick it for variety rather than consistency.
15. Zodiac Deck — best for a shop-centered run
Effect: shop changes include Tarot and Planet cards, with other shop options restricted according to the deck’s effect. Unlock: win a run with a Blue Deck. Its specialized shop environment can support a plan built around those resources, but it is less broadly forgiving than the top choices. Check the in-game deck description for the precise shop effect in your version.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose by what you want from the run
- New to Balatro: start with Blue for an extra hand, or use Red, which is available immediately and adds a discard.
- Want more opening options: choose Yellow for extra starting money.
- Want a distinctive scoring challenge: try Plasma, remembering that its base Blind size is doubled.
- Want the largest late-game Joker capacity: Black adds a slot, but the missing hand makes the opening more demanding.
- Want a specialized or unpredictable run: consider Ghost, Magic, Nebula, or Erratic according to the mechanic you want to explore.
Unlocks and ranking limits
The first five color decks are tied to collection discovery: Red is available from the start, while Blue, Yellow, Green, and Black unlock at 20, 50, 75, and 100 items respectively. Other decks are opened through wins with particular color decks or stake requirements. Plasma, for example, requires a win on Blue Stake or harder. Because unlock routes can depend on progress and game version, use the collection screen’s deck descriptions as the final check.
