There is no single best base location in Conan Exiles. The right site depends on whether you need a defensible PvP fortress, a resource-rich PvE headquarters, a quiet solo camp or an easy first settlement. The Crevice is the most consistently cited defensive position; Gate of the Moon is the leading concealed PvP choice; Relicwatcher Rise, Sepermeru, the Highlands and the temperate country west of New Asagarth suit larger main bases; and the southern Noob River remains the safest learning area.

Use the grid references in this guide as search areas rather than exact coordinates. Different maps and guides place landmarks slightly differently, and the current 2026 patch has not been independently verified here. Walk the site on your own server before committing valuable building pieces.

Choose your base by the problem it must solve

A good location is a compromise between security, logistics and the number of people using it. A hidden PvP bunker can be miserable for a clan that needs constant iron, while a resource-rich city edge can be a liability when enemy players or Purge enemies have many approach routes.

  • For defensive PvP: start with the Crevice, then investigate Gate of the Moon or a high island position.
  • For concealed PvP: Gate of the Moon hides a two-level ruin in jungle foliage, at the cost of a longer iron run.
  • For a PvE clan headquarters: compare Relicwatcher Rise, Sepermeru and the Highlands with the temperate area west of New Asagarth.
  • For a solo player: Riversend offers a quieter footprint; Relicwatcher Rise gives better visibility and supplies if you can manage the heat.
  • For a first character: the southern Noob River near Sinner’s Refuge has forgiving resources and water.
  • For resource farming and thrall progression: the Hand of the Maker puts animals and the Unnamed City within useful reach, but it is less universally convenient than the central choices.

Guide rankings are recommendations rather than measured server statistics. Population, clan rules, building restrictions, map settings and the presence of an established rival can change the practical winner overnight.

Location comparison

Location Best fit What the site offers Main liability Climate and visibility
The Crevice Defensive PvP or a compact clan fort Dense metal inside a chasm and a practical ground-level entrance that can be funneled through one gate Cold gear is necessary; the site is frequently contested on public servers Cold tundra; naturally concealed below the surrounding terrain
Gate of the Moon (M5 area) Hidden PvP base Two-level jungle ruin with water, food and metal close to the build Iron is farther away and the hot, humid jungle complicates long trips Hot jungle; foliage limits casual discovery
Island chains Maximum natural separation Water and difficult climbs discourage ordinary attackers Resupply, hauling and access for your own clan are awkward Exposure depends on the island; approach routes are limited but visible from the water
Heliograph Heights High-ground defense Height can make the position difficult to assault The recommendation is based on an old guide, so current terrain and building rules must be checked Elevation improves sightlines; exact climate depends on the chosen ledge
Southern Noob River, G4/H4 near Sinner’s Refuge New players and early-game camps Reliable water, plant fiber and low-tier materials, with nearby ironstone and coal Low-tier surroundings become inefficient for an established clan Generally forgiving; the river makes orientation easy
Riversend Solo players seeking quiet A less conspicuous base area suitable for a small footprint Less strategic information is available than for the heavily documented sites; scout nearby routes yourself Depends on the exact bank or ridge selected
Relicwatcher Rise, B7/B8 near the Oasis of Nekhet Visible, resource-balanced main base Elevation, metal, food, wood and water, with sightlines for early warning Hot and dry; exposed approaches can reveal the base to travelers Hot desert; open views rather than concealment
Sepermeru and the Highlands Large PvE headquarters Heavy iron and coal access, plus established routes and nearby activity City-edge construction can keep many NPCs loaded around your structures, increasing distractions and potential attacks Varies by exact district; expect more traffic than at an isolated camp
West of New Asagarth, F8/G8 All-around clan base Iron, wood, stone and strong thrall opportunities in a temperate setting Popular all-purpose land can attract competing builders Temperate; easier day-to-day survival than extreme climates
The Hand of the Maker PvE resource and animal farming Animals and materials nearby, with the Unnamed City available for leveling and thrall capture Not as specialized for concealment or a single chokepoint as the PvP picks Check the exact approach and local heat or cold before building

The Crevice: strongest conventional choke point

The Crevice is the safest starting point when your priority is forcing attackers through a predictable route. The chasm contains dense metal nodes, so the defensive site also pays for itself in routine mining. A wall and gate at the practical ground-level entrance can turn the terrain into one controlled approach, while caves provide room to expand without exposing every workstation.

Plan for the climate before placing a bed or forge. Insulated armor, warming consumables and a reliable supply route are not optional luxuries in the tundra. The same geometry that makes the Crevice attractive also makes it obvious to experienced public-server players; popular defensive sites are often contested. Check for existing foundations, enemy watch posts and regularly travelled paths before investing.

How to build there

  • Place the first gate where the ground naturally narrows, rather than sealing yourself into a dead-end pocket.
  • Keep storage, beds and crafting rooms behind a second internal barrier so one breached gate does not expose the entire base.
  • Use the cave volume for protected expansion, but leave enough clearance for thralls, doors and camera movement.
  • Put a secondary exit or emergency climbing route outside the obvious entrance; it is for evacuation, not for weakening the main choke point.

Gate of the Moon: concealed jungle PvP

Gate of the Moon, commonly identified around M5, is a two-level jungle ruin that hides a compact base in dense foliage. Water, food and metal are available close enough for routine operation, and the vegetation keeps the structure out of the sightline of many passers-by. This makes it a better fit for a small PvP group that values concealment over a direct resource corridor.

The trade is logistics. Iron lies farther away than at the Crevice, so a group that smelts continuously will spend more time escorting mining runs or maintaining a forward outpost. Heat and humidity also make long journeys more demanding. Avoid covering every approach with decorative walls: the ruin’s natural concealment is valuable, and excessive construction can make the site easier to spot.

Practical layout

  • Use the lower level for expendable production and the upper level for beds, valuables and command storage.
  • Hide external chests and animal pens inside the foliage only if they do not create obvious pathing or rendering clues.
  • Keep a small iron cache inside the ruin so one interrupted mining trip does not stop repairs.
  • Scout the surrounding canopy from several angles after each major build; a structure that is invisible from the river may be obvious from a ridge.

High ground and islands: defense with logistical costs

Island chains

Island bases are attractive when preventing a casual ground assault matters more than convenience. Climbs are awkward, approach routes are limited and attackers must commit to water crossings or specialized movement. The same barriers affect your clan: hauling ore, moving thralls and replacing a forgotten crafting ingredient all take longer. Reserve island sites for groups prepared to maintain boats, bridges or a mainland supply cache.

Heliograph Heights

Heliograph Heights has been described as one of the safest positions because of its elevation. That recommendation comes from a guide more than four years old, so treat it as a lead rather than a current guarantee. Verify that the ledge still permits the foundations you need, that the route is not covered by newer building restrictions and that the height does not leave you without water or a practical escape path.

Beginner and solo locations

Southern Noob River

The southern river area around grids G4/H4 near Sinner’s Refuge is the dependable first settlement. Water is immediately available, plant fiber and other low-tier materials are abundant, and nearby ironstone and coal let a new character progress without a dangerous expedition. The river also provides an easy navigation landmark when you are still learning the map.

Do not treat the Noob River as a permanent headquarters by default. Once you are making steel, training several thralls or defending against organized players, the low-tier resource loop becomes inefficient. Keep a small river outpost for respawning and early farming, then move the main inventory when your next region offers a meaningful upgrade.

Riversend

Riversend is recommended for solo players who want a quieter base. A solo site should minimize upkeep rather than imitate a clan fortress: choose a footprint that can be defended by a few thralls, keep production rooms close together and avoid building a landmark that advertises your exact location. Walk the banks and nearby ridges before settling, because the usefulness of Riversend depends heavily on the specific parcel you claim.

Relicwatcher Rise

Relicwatcher Rise, in the B7/B8 area near the Oasis of Nekhet, is a strong solo-to-small-clan compromise. Its elevation provides warning of approaching players, while metal, food, wood and water reduce routine travel. The hot, dry environment demands heat management and regular water planning. Build shade, keep water containers stocked and avoid placing every workbench on the most visible crest.

Main-base regions for clans

Sepermeru and the Highlands

Sepermeru and the surrounding Highlands are attractive to a clan that consumes large quantities of iron and coal. Established roads and NPC activity can make the area feel connected to the world rather than isolated in wilderness. A city-edge base has a significant downside: nearby NPC artificial intelligence may remain loaded around your structures, creating more movement, combat and potential interference than an isolated site.

Before claiming a city fringe, spend a full play session observing patrol routes, respawn points and the distance between your proposed gate and the nearest NPC cluster. Leave a buffer so your doors, animal pens and thralls do not overlap the busiest pathing lanes.

  • harvest resources to craft tools and weapons, then build anything from a small home to entire cities piece by piece

West of New Asagarth

The temperate country west of New Asagarth, commonly marked around F8/G8, is the broadest all-around recommendation. Iron, wood and stone are close, the climate is easier to live with than the desert or tundra and strong thrall opportunities are nearby. Its balance is also its weakness: a location that solves everyone’s basic needs is more likely to be noticed and occupied.

Use natural slopes and tree lines to break sightlines, but leave a clear internal road for carts or thrall movement. A clan can divide production into separate, defensible rooms instead of one giant hall; this limits the damage from a single breach and keeps the base usable while one section is repaired.

The Hand of the Maker

The Hand of the Maker is a PvE-oriented choice for players who value animals and steady resource gathering. The Unnamed City is close enough to support leveling and thrall capture, so the site can serve as a progression hub rather than merely a storage camp. It is not the obvious answer for a concealment-focused PvP group: inspect every approach and build for warning time instead of assuming nearby landmarks provide safety.

How the Purge changes every location decision

The Purge is a PvE event that affects base design regardless of where you settle. Community wiki summaries date its major overhaul to Age of War – Chapter 2 in September 2023. Because current 2026 patch behavior was not confirmed by official notes here, check the event rules shown by your server before relying on an old layout.

Rules that matter for construction

  • Purge difficulty is tied to the value of the treasure hoard.
  • Wave difficulty rises with the players and thralls in the area.
  • During the event, you cannot place new structures or repair existing ones.
  • Community reports disagree about path blocking. One anecdote says a wall or gate stops the event; another says the deciding check is whether Purge enemies have a viable path to the treasure. Neither is an authoritative rule.
  • A player reported a Crevice Purge base large enough that meteors missed building pieces but destroyed the coffer. That is a single account, not a guarantee for other layouts.

Designing a Purge-resistant base

  1. Choose the treasure room first. Put the coffer where it has structural protection and where you can reach it without crossing every production room.
  2. Map a real enemy route. Assume attackers will seek a viable path to the treasure rather than relying on one gate to make the event disappear.
  3. Separate expendable and critical rooms. Keep farms, furnaces and spare beds away from the coffer so a wave does not disable everything at once.
  4. Leave repair access. Since repairs are unavailable during the event, build enough redundancy that a damaged door or staircase does not trap defenders.
  5. Test before raising hoard value. Add treasure gradually and observe how your server scales enemies, then increase the stockpile only when your defenders and thralls can handle the next tier.

Scouting a site before you claim it

Do not place a foundation at the first attractive view. A one-hour survey can prevent days of dismantling and relocating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Approach from every direction. Walk the site from the nearest road, river, ridge and likely enemy travel route. Note which angles expose the entrance or roof.
  2. Check the complete resource loop. Time a trip to water, wood, stone, iron, coal, food and the nearest useful NPC or thrall area. A resource that is technically nearby but separated by a dangerous climb is not a convenient resource.
  3. Measure buildable ground. Place temporary foundations or use building mode to confirm that floors, gates, stairs and ceilings snap as expected. Caves and ruins can contain invisible collision that wastes pieces.
  4. Watch respawns and pathing. Observe animals, NPCs and hostile creatures for several minutes. A quiet corner at noon may become a patrol lane after a respawn.
  5. Check temperature and consumables. Carry the armor, warming food or cooling items you would use in normal operation, not just during a brief scouting trip.
  6. Look for existing claims. Public servers may have abandoned foundations, hidden vaults or a nearby clan that considers the area theirs even when the map appears empty.
  7. Plan two exits. One should be convenient for routine hauling; the other should remain usable if the main gate is blocked or destroyed.

Match the footprint to your group

Solo

Prioritize a compact room with one defensible entrance, a hidden bed and enough storage to avoid outdoor clutter. Riversend and a carefully chosen Relicwatcher Rise parcel are more practical than a huge fortress that you cannot staff. Keep a small remote cache rather than expanding every workshop at the main door.

Small group

Add a second defensive layer, a dedicated thrall area and a separate Purge route. Gate of the Moon works when concealment matters; the Crevice works when the group can supply cold-weather gear and defend its known approach.

Large clan

Resource throughput and redundancy matter more than perfect concealment. Sepermeru, the Highlands or the temperate New Asagarth region can support multiple production rooms, but divide the base into compartments and establish forward caches. A single spectacular structure creates a single spectacular failure.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Choosing a famous location without checking occupancy

Popular recommendations attract competitors. If the Crevice or west New Asagarth is already watched, move to a less fashionable nearby parcel with a shorter resource run rather than forcing a contested claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Building for screenshots instead of movement

Decorative towers and narrow staircases consume pieces while obstructing thralls and defenders. Test every doorway with your largest follower and keep a direct route between beds, storage and the gate.

Ignoring climate until the first emergency

Cold and heat penalties turn a resource run into a death loop. Store climate-appropriate armor and consumables at the base, and keep a second set in an outpost or emergency chest.

Relying on one door or one hidden entrance

One choke point is useful only if defenders can reach it and still retreat. Add an internal fallback room and an exit that cannot be sealed by a single destroyed gate.

Assuming Purge behavior from an old guide

The event was overhauled in 2023 and server settings differ. Treat community pathing claims as unconfirmed, inspect the current event interface and test with a modest treasure value before committing your entire hoard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Set the mode and population: PvP, PvE, solo, small group or clan.
  2. Choose your non-negotiable: a chokepoint, concealment, iron access, quiet surroundings or beginner resources.
  3. Shortlist two regions: use the table, then eliminate any site already claimed or incompatible with your climate tolerance.
  4. Run the scouting checklist: verify routes, buildable area, resource times, NPC pathing and escape options in your own session.
  5. Build a temporary camp: place only a bed, box and basic fire until the location survives a complete supply loop.
  6. Expand in layers: storage and beds first, production second, defenses and Purge infrastructure third.
  7. Reassess after your first serious attack or Purge: move vulnerable rooms, improve the route to the coffer and relocate if the site’s basic logistics are wrong.

The best base is therefore the location whose disadvantages your group can actively manage. Pick the Crevice when a controllable entrance outweighs cold and public attention; Gate of the Moon when concealment outweighs the long iron haul; the Noob River when learning speed matters; and the central resource regions when a mature clan needs reliable throughput. Confirm every grid and current event rule in-game before spending your rare materials.
