Best BIOS Settings for Better Performance and Gaming: Safe XMP, EXPO and Resizable BAR Setup

The best BIOS setup is a supported one: enable the correct XMP or EXPO memory profile, use UEFI with CSM disabled, and turn on Above 4G Decoding plus Re-Size BAR when your full platform supports them.

The safest BIOS performance setup is not a universal overclock. For most compatible PCs, check three features: enable the memory profile intended for your platform (Intel XMP or AMD EXPO), use UEFI boot with CSM or Legacy mode disabled, and enable Above 4G Decoding plus Re-Size BAR when your CPU, motherboard, firmware and graphics card support the complete combination. These settings can improve access to the performance your hardware was designed to provide, but there is no universal FPS increase. Stability depends on the exact parts, firmware, drivers, games and resolution.

What “best BIOS settings” really means

BIOS or UEFI firmware controls hardware before Windows loads. A setting that is beneficial on one system can prevent another system from booting, so the best configuration is the fastest supported configuration for your specific CPU, motherboard, memory kit and GPU—not a copied preset from another PC.

The settings with the clearest gaming relevance in the official guidance reviewed for this article are:

  • XMP for compatible Intel memory configurations.
  • EXPO for compatible AMD memory configurations.
  • UEFI boot with CSM or Legacy mode disabled.
  • Above 4G Decoding, set to Enabled or Auto when Enabled is unavailable.
  • Re-Size BAR, also described as Resizable BAR or Smart Access Memory, when the whole platform supports it.

Do not treat these as guaranteed overclocking instructions. Memory profiles can raise memory speed above default SPD settings, and Intel warns that changing clock frequency or voltage can reduce stability, security, performance and component life and may void product warranties. That warning appears in Intel’s support material reviewed on April 9, 2026.

“Altering clock frequency or voltage may void any product warranties and reduce stability, security, performance, and life of the processor and other components.”

Prepare before changing firmware

Identify the platform and the current firmware

Write down the motherboard model, CPU, memory kit model and graphics card. Record the current BIOS values, or use the board’s built-in profile-save feature if it provides one. This gives you a known configuration to restore if a change causes a failed boot or game instability.

Menu names and locations differ by motherboard vendor and firmware version. ASUS documentation uses XMP for Intel platforms and EXPO for AMD platforms; MSI’s BIOS overview shows that feature names and layouts are board-dependent. Use the manual for your exact board rather than assuming that a menu shown in a video exists on your system.

Check memory validation

Look for your exact memory kit on the motherboard’s QVL (qualified vendor list) when one is available. A kit that is listed has been validated by the board maker for specified conditions. A kit missing from the list may still work, but the absence means you have less platform-specific validation to rely on.

Use a stable update process

If a BIOS update is needed to expose UEFI, Above 4G Decoding or Re-Size BAR, follow only the motherboard manufacturer’s instructions. Use stable power during the update and do not interrupt the process. Updating firmware is a prerequisite decision, not a reason to apply unrelated CPU voltage, power-limit or manual-clock values.

Change one variable at a time

  1. Save or record the current settings.
  2. Change one setting or one closely related prerequisite group.
  3. Boot into the operating system.
  4. Check for failed boots, crashes, memory errors and game instability.
  5. Only then make the next change.

This sequence makes it possible to identify which setting caused a problem and to return to a known-good state.

Enable XMP or EXPO for memory

Memory modules contain default SPD settings intended for broad compatibility. XMP and EXPO profiles are predefined, tested settings that can run compatible DDR4 or DDR5 kits above those defaults. Intel describes XMP as a profile system for compatible DDR4 and DDR5 modules. ASUS documents XMP on Intel platforms and EXPO on AMD platforms.

Profile Platform association in the vendor guidance What it changes What still determines stability
XMP Intel platforms Loads a predefined memory profile for a compatible DDR4 or DDR5 kit. CPU memory controller, motherboard, memory kit and firmware.
EXPO AMD platforms Loads a predefined memory profile intended for compatible AMD systems. CPU memory controller, motherboard, memory kit and firmware.

Step-by-step memory setup

  1. Restart the PC and enter the firmware setup using the key or procedure specified in your motherboard manual.
  2. Open the motherboard’s memory, overclocking or advanced settings area. The exact heading varies by vendor.
  3. Locate the XMP option on an Intel platform or the EXPO option on an AMD platform.
  4. Select the available profile for the installed kit and apply it. Do not manually copy voltage, timing or frequency values from another system.
  5. Save the change and reboot.
  6. Run the memory checks and games you normally use. Watch for crashes, application errors, memory-test errors, spontaneous restarts or a failure to boot.

If the system is unstable, return the profile to Auto or load the saved BIOS profile. A profile that works on one CPU and board combination is not automatically safe on another, even when the memory kit is the same.

  • Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
  • Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
  • Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.

How to choose between available profiles

Prefer the profile that matches your platform and is supported by the board documentation. If the kit appears on the motherboard QVL, that is stronger evidence than a generic claim that the memory is compatible. When several profiles are offered, evaluate them by stability and reversibility rather than by a label alone: use the setting that completes your own memory and game testing and can be returned to Auto easily.

Set UEFI mode and disable CSM or Legacy mode

Intel’s Resizable BAR procedure requires UEFI boot mode and CSM or Legacy mode disabled. CSM (Compatibility Support Module) is the firmware option that permits legacy boot behavior. The names may appear as separate UEFI, CSM and Legacy choices, or as a combined boot-mode control.

Step-by-step boot-mode setup

  1. Open the exact motherboard manual and find the boot-mode or CSM section.
  2. Confirm that the firmware exposes a UEFI boot option.
  3. Set boot mode to UEFI and disable CSM or Legacy mode, following the labels used by your board.
  4. Save this change and restart before changing Re-Size BAR.
  5. If the operating system no longer starts, restore the previous boot setting or your saved profile and consult the board and operating-system documentation before trying again.

Do not assume that a UEFI switch is harmless on every existing installation. The important point for Re-Size BAR is that the system actually boots in the required UEFI configuration, not merely that a similarly named menu option exists.

Enable Above 4G Decoding and Re-Size BAR

Resizable BAR lets the platform expose a larger address range for graphics memory access. Intel’s documentation uses Resizable BAR and Re-Size BAR for the same class of feature; Smart Access Memory is another name used by vendors. The feature is conditional: CPU, motherboard, firmware and GPU support must line up.

Intel says Arc graphics can function without Resizable BAR, but it must be enabled for optimal performance. That is a support requirement for the best-supported configuration, not a promise of a fixed frame-rate gain.

Required order

  1. Use UEFI boot mode.
  2. Disable CSM or Legacy mode.
  3. Enable Above 4G Decoding. If the board does not offer an Enabled choice, Intel’s procedure allows Auto where applicable.
  4. Enable Re-Size BAR after the preceding settings are active.
  5. Save, reboot and verify support in the graphics-card or vendor utility.

What to do when a setting is missing

A missing Re-Size BAR, Above 4G Decoding or UEFI option can indicate that the current firmware or hardware combination does not expose the feature. Check the exact board manual and firmware notes. Do not force a hidden or unofficial setting, and do not infer support from another model in the same product family.

Verification checklist

  • The PC boots in UEFI mode after CSM or Legacy is disabled.
  • Above 4G Decoding is Enabled or, where the board provides no Enabled state, Auto.
  • Re-Size BAR is Enabled.
  • The GPU or motherboard utility reports the feature as active.
  • Your games remain stable after normal play and testing.

A safe order for applying all three changes

Applying settings in a controlled sequence reduces troubleshooting time:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the original firmware values or save a BIOS profile.
  2. Check the board manual, current firmware support and the memory QVL.
  3. Enable XMP or EXPO, then boot and test memory and games.
  4. Set UEFI mode and disable CSM or Legacy mode, then confirm the operating system still starts.
  5. Enable Above 4G Decoding and reboot.
  6. Enable Re-Size BAR and reboot again.
  7. Verify the feature in the GPU or vendor utility and run your normal games.

If a failure appears after a particular step, return that setting to Auto or restore the saved profile before attempting another change.

Troubleshoot failed boots and instability

The PC will not boot after enabling XMP or EXPO

  • Power down using the recovery procedure in the motherboard manual.
  • Load the board’s defaults or the saved BIOS profile.
  • Boot with the memory profile disabled.
  • Confirm the memory kit and board documentation, including QVL information.
  • Retest with one change at a time rather than adding manual voltage or timing values.

Windows or the boot drive is not found after changing UEFI or CSM

Restore the previous boot-mode value or saved profile so the system returns to its known configuration. Then verify how the existing operating-system installation was configured and follow the motherboard and operating-system vendor’s migration guidance. Do not repeatedly toggle modes without recording each state.

Re-Size BAR is enabled but the utility does not report it

Recheck all prerequisites: UEFI boot, CSM or Legacy disabled, Above 4G Decoding enabled or set to the supported Auto state, and Re-Size BAR enabled. Confirm that the current CPU, board firmware and GPU combination supports the feature. If one prerequisite is absent, the utility may not show the feature as active.

Games crash or show errors after the changes

Return the most recently changed setting to Auto or restore the saved profile, then retest. A profile can be technically selectable yet unstable on a particular CPU, board, memory kit or firmware revision. Test the memory profile separately from the Re-Size BAR changes so the cause is identifiable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Settings you should not copy blindly

Fixed CPU clocks, manual voltages, power limits and timings are not universal gaming settings. Cooling capacity, silicon quality, firmware behavior, warranty terms and the rest of the platform differ from system to system. The official guidance supports using validated platform features; it does not establish one safe voltage or clock value for every PC.

How to judge performance without inventing an FPS promise

No universal published FPS percentage is established in the official material used for this guide. Intel and motherboard vendors use qualitative terms such as enhanced or optimal performance and condition results on supported hardware. Your result can vary with the game, resolution, GPU, CPU, memory configuration and drivers.

Compare before and after only under repeatable conditions: the same game scene, resolution, graphics settings and driver state. Record whether the system remains stable, then decide whether the setting is worth keeping. A smaller theoretical gain that works every day is preferable to a faster profile that produces crashes or failed boots.

Platform-fit decision guide

Question Action
Is the system using an Intel platform with compatible DDR4 or DDR5 memory? Check the board’s XMP option and validate the selected profile.
Is the system using an AMD platform with compatible memory? Check the board’s EXPO option and validate the selected profile.
Does the board support UEFI and expose CSM or Legacy controls? Use UEFI boot and disable CSM or Legacy before attempting Re-Size BAR.
Does the firmware expose Above 4G Decoding? Set it to Enabled, or Auto where Enabled is unavailable and supported by the board.
Does the firmware expose Re-Size BAR and does the complete CPU, board and GPU combination support it? Enable it and verify in the GPU or vendor utility.
Did a change cause instability? Restore Auto or the saved profile, then retest one setting at a time.

Final pre-game checklist

  • Current settings are recorded or saved as a BIOS profile.
  • The BIOS update, if needed, was performed according to the motherboard maker’s instructions with stable power.
  • The memory kit’s platform fit and QVL status were checked.
  • Intel XMP or AMD EXPO is enabled only when the platform and kit support it.
  • UEFI boot is active and CSM or Legacy mode is disabled for Re-Size BAR use.
  • Above 4G Decoding is Enabled or the supported Auto state.
  • Re-Size BAR is enabled and verified by a utility.
  • Memory tests and normal games complete without errors, crashes or failed boots.
  • No copied manual voltage, power-limit or CPU-clock values were added.
