The strongest all-around Bladesinger route is Wizard 10 / Oath of the Ancients Paladin 2 if you want Wizard spell progression with a burst-damage option from Divine Smite. A pure Wizard 12 is simpler and keeps full subclass progression; Fighter 2 is another option if Action Surge matters more than the Paladin features. None is a universal damage winner: choose around how often you want to fight in melee, how much spell progression you value, and what gear you have.
Which Bladesinger build should you choose?
Bladesinger is best approached as a flexible melee-caster: use weapon attacks when positioning or a spell supports them, and use Wizard magic for defense, control, mobility, or area damage. The practical multiclass example below comes from PC Gamer’s build guide; it is a recommendation, not a controlled comparison. PC Gamer’s Bladesinger build
| Route | What it emphasizes | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Wizard 10 / Oath of the Ancients Paladin 2 | Most Wizard progression plus Divine Smite for melee burst. | Requires multiclassing and delays Wizard features compared with staying Wizard. |
| Wizard 12 | Simple progression through the full Bladesinger subclass and Wizard levels. | No Paladin Divine Smite or Fighter Action Surge from a multiclass dip. |
| Wizard 10 / Fighter 2 | Action Surge for an additional burst of actions. | Trades some Wizard progression for the Fighter dip; the cited guide mentions it as an alternative rather than detailing a full progression. |
The comparison is about build priorities, not measured damage. Encounter difficulty, party support, and available equipment affect how useful each route feels.
How Bladesong changes the way you fight

At Wizard level 2, Bladesong grants +2 AC, 3 m (10 ft) of additional movement, advantage on Acrobatics checks, and +2 to Constitution saving throws. Medium or heavy armor impedes Bladesinging, even if the character is proficient with it. Bladesong has two uses at first; it gains another use at level 5, when its AC and Constitution save bonuses increase to +3. Level 6 grants Extra Attack. At level 9, Bladesong gains another use and its bonuses increase to +4. At Wizard level 10, Song of Defence lets you expend a spell slot to reduce incoming damage by 5 per slot level. Larian’s Patch 8 announcement
Larian Studios describes the subclass’s action loop this way: “A fan of pointy objects and magic casting? Bladesinging Wizards follow a technique that claims its name from the ringing of a blade as it’s unsheathed, gracefully leaping and slashing between enemies. At Level 2, you’ll be able to choose this subclass and attack with your Bladesong, building up to a Bladesong Climax, unleashing damage upon your enemies and healing your allies. Nice.” Larian Studios, Community Update 34
Use Bladesong when you are ready to commit
Bladesong is a limited-use combat state, so activate it when you expect to benefit from its movement, defense, or Constitution-save protection—not automatically at the first sign of danger. Its improved movement helps you reach a target or reposition, while its AC and Constitution bonuses support fighting near enemies and maintaining concentration. Keep track of its uses as you progress: the feature gains additional uses and stronger bonuses at the levels above.

Spend spell slots with a purpose
Slots have competing jobs: casting a defensive or control spell, using a damage spell, and—at Wizard 10—reducing damage through Song of Defence. The Paladin route adds Divine Smite as another way to turn a melee opportunity into burst. Decide whether a fight calls for staying alive, controlling a dangerous enemy, or ending a priority target before spending your strongest resources.

Ability scores and level progression
PC Gamer’s example starts with Strength 8, Dexterity 17, Constitution 14, Intelligence 16, Wisdom 10, and Charisma 8. Treat that as one build plan, not a requirement. Dexterity supports weapon attacks, initiative, and AC; Intelligence supports Wizard spellcasting. How you balance those priorities depends on whether you expect to attack in melee often or lean more heavily on spells. PC Gamer’s Bladesinger build
- At Wizard level 4, the example takes Great Weapon Master.
- Continue Bladesinger through Wizard level 9.
- Take two Paladin levels for Divine Smite.
- Return to Wizard for level 10 and Song of Defence.
This progression preserves the guide’s stated endpoint of Wizard 10 / Paladin 2. If you prefer fewer multiclass decisions and uninterrupted Wizard advancement, stay Wizard through level 12 instead.

Choose spells by the job they need to do
The PC Gamer guide’s spell selections cover weapon-linked damage, defense, movement, concentration support, control, and area damage. Use the list as a menu rather than a compulsory preparation order; the best choice changes with your party and the encounter. PC Gamer’s Bladesinger build
| Role | Guide-listed spells | How they fit the build |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon-linked damage | Booming Blade, Shadow Blade | Connect spellcasting with a weapon-focused turn. |
| Defense | Shield, Mage Armour, Blur, Mirror Image | Help protect a character who may be close to enemies; armor choices must still respect Bladesong compatibility. |
| Mobility and positioning | Expeditious Retreat, Longstrider, Misty Step | Support movement to or away from melee and help reach useful positions. |
| Concentration support and utility | Haste, Invisibility, Greater Invisibility, Detect Thoughts | Provide ongoing combat support or utility; weigh concentration choices against one another. |
| Control | Hold Person, Hold Monster | Restrict a target when control is more valuable than immediate area damage. |
| Area damage and summoned help | Magic Missile, Fireball, Ice Storm, Cone of Cold, Animate Dead, Conjure Minor Elemental, Conjure Elemental | Cover damage or battlefield presence when closing to melee is not the best answer. |
Practical preparation priorities
- Keep a defensive response available for turns when enemies can focus you.
- Choose a mobility option if reaching a target or escaping a bad position is a recurring problem.
- Do not treat several concentration spells as simultaneously usable support; choose the effect that suits the encounter.
- Bring control for dangerous enemies and area options when groups make single-target melee less effective.
Weapons and armor: useful options, not universal best-in-slot gear
The PC Gamer build assumes Phalar Aluve and recommends Elven Chain in Act 3. Its guide notes a specific interaction: Elven Chain can combine with Mage Armour and Bracers of Defence while still allowing Bladesong. That claim is specific to this item and interaction; it should not be generalized to other armor. PC Gamer’s Bladesinger build

Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
- Choose Wizard 10 / Paladin 2 if you want Wizard spellcasting alongside Divine Smite and are comfortable managing a multiclass.
- Choose Wizard 12 if straightforward Wizard progression is more important than a multiclass burst option.
- Consider Fighter 2 if Action Surge appeals more than the Paladin route, while accepting the cost to Wizard progression.
- Build around Dexterity and Intelligence according to whether your turns will emphasize weapon attacks or Wizard spells.
- Prepare spells for the encounter’s actual need—defense, movement, control, concentration support, or area damage—rather than trying to make every turn a melee turn.
