For a newcomer who wants the classic Borderlands campaign and loot chase, The Handsome Collection is the strongest starting recommendation. PlayStation describes it as containing the definitive versions of Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel, built for the console generation the collection launched on. Its PS4 release was March 24, 2015.
Borderlands 2 is the collection’s central draw if you want the series’ familiar mix of character-driven humor, missions, and loot. The bundle also gives you The Pre-Sequel, so you can continue into another full game without choosing a separate entry first.

2. Borderlands 3: best for newer shooter-looter gameplay
Borderlands 3 launched on PS4 in 2019. 2K announced its worldwide availability on PlayStation 4, and the PlayStation Store lists a PS4/PS5 product. For PS4 owners looking for a newer entry in the series’ shooter-looter format, it is the natural alternative to the older games.
The Store listing says PS4 copies include a digital upgrade to the optimized PS5 version. It also advertises up to 4K resolution at 60 fps in single-player and online co-op on supported hardware; those performance details are not a promise about how the PS4 version runs. If story tone matters more to you than newer combat, Borderlands 2 may be a better fit.

3. Legendary Collection: best for the series’ origins
The Legendary Collection listing identifies a three-game package: Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition, Borderlands 2, and The Pre-Sequel. It is the pick for readers who want to begin with the original game and see the series’ foundation before moving on to later entries. Availability of this edition can vary by region.
Do not confuse this package with The Handsome Collection: the Legendary Collection adds the original Game of the Year Edition to the latter pair of games.

4. Tales from the Borderlands: best story-focused detour
Tales from the Borderlands is a different kind of game, not another looter-shooter. PlayStation describes its PS4 release as a definitive re-release containing all five episodes of a narrative adventure set between Borderlands 2 and Borderlands 3. Choices shape the story, making this a better fit for players who prioritize dialogue, characters, and branching decisions over shooting and gear collection.
