For a reliable team, cover the roles you need, then learn abilities from other jobs and carry them into the class that suits the fight. Square Enix confirms that learned abilities remain usable after you change jobs, making job progression about building a flexible unit—not choosing one permanent class.
How to choose a job
Think about a job in two ways: the role its class performs now, and the abilities it can teach a unit for later. A class that is not the right main job for a particular fight may still be worth developing for its skills. The official game page describes more than 20 jobs and hundreds of abilities, while Square Enix’s beginner guide recommends leveling multiple jobs to open advanced options and combining abilities when a battle calls for them.
Before settling on a class, consider:
- What the team needs: damage, healing, revival, support, or another role.
- The unit: a job should complement the character rather than be treated as a universal template.
- The battle: objectives, terrain, and the challenge you face can change which role is most useful.
- Primary class or ability source: decide whether the unit should fight in the job or learn its abilities and use them elsewhere.
These are practical decision factors, not a formula for a guaranteed optimal build. Players discussing job progression likewise note that difficulty, character, and team composition affect what counts as best; that is community advice, not an official rule.
Strong jobs by role
The following recommendations combine role-based guidance with a subjective October 2025 ranking. They are useful starting points, not an official tier list or a claim that one job is strongest in every encounter.

| Job | Why consider it | Best way to think about it |
|---|---|---|
| Monk | Kotaku’s October 2025 ranking places it first, citing physical attacks, support options, and a relatively low equipment burden. | A versatile physical and support option to consider when you want a unit that can contribute in more than one way. |
| Chemist | Kotaku ranks it second, highlighting immediate item use and revival utility. | A practical choice when item-based support and getting allies back into the fight matter to your plan. |
| White Mage | Included among Kotaku’s strong role-specific choices. | Consider it when your lineup needs a dedicated healing role. |
| Black Mage | Included among Kotaku’s strong role-specific choices. | Consider it when you want a magic-focused damage role. |
| Summoner | Included among Kotaku’s strong choices for particular roles. | Evaluate it against the needs of the encounter and your other units. |
| Ninja | Included among Kotaku’s strong choices for particular roles. | A role-specific option rather than an automatic upgrade for every character. |
| Samurai | Included among Kotaku’s strong choices for particular roles. | Choose it when its job identity and available abilities fit your unit and plan. |
| Dragoon, Geomancer, and Orator | Also appear among the jobs in Kotaku’s ranked recommendations. | Potential fits for a team or build with a specific need; the ranking does not make them universal picks. |
Kotaku also treats Arithmetician and Time Mage as more situational or especially useful as sources of abilities than as a unit’s main job. That distinction is important: a job can be valuable to learn without being the class you keep equipped for every battle.
A practical progression plan
- Identify a gap in the party. Decide whether you need another damage dealer, healing or revival support, or a different capability for the next battle.
- Develop more than one job. Square Enix’s beginner guide recommends varied job leveling to unlock advanced jobs. Use that as a progression direction rather than trying to force every unit into a single class immediately.
- Learn abilities that serve a purpose. Prioritize skills that address a role your team lacks or a challenge you expect to face.
- Change jobs and combine skills. Because learned abilities can be used after changing jobs, you can pair a unit’s current class with abilities learned elsewhere.
- Adjust for the encounter. Reconsider the unit’s job and ability combination when the objective, terrain, or difficulty changes what the team needs.
Square Enix’s beginner guide specifically notes that some boss strategies benefit from abilities learned across different jobs. It does not prescribe one universal boss build; the useful lesson is to treat job skills as tools you can combine rather than assuming the starting or current class must do everything.

Why there is no universal “best” job
A ranking can help you shortlist jobs, but it cannot account for every unit, difficulty setting, lineup, or battle. Kotaku’s list is editorial judgment, and player recommendations are anecdotal. Neither is a developer-issued balance ranking. Use rankings to find candidates, then choose based on what your party needs and whether you want the class itself or its abilities.
The current release is Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, not an unspecified edition of FFT. Square Enix’s official page describes the job system; its September 2025 beginner guide covers the current game’s systems and features, including difficulty levels, a classic version, tactical view, battle speed controls, redesigned interface, and full voice acting. Nintendo’s official US listing identifies a Nintendo Switch edition released September 30, 2025. Platform availability and edition details may vary by region.
