For a straightforward ranged starting point, try the Repeater Elemental archetype; for sustain, consider Double Knives with Lifesteal; and for added utility, pair a main damage skill with Reflexes or Shadow Dash. These are starting points from a 2025 guide, not verified rankings for the current game: Hell Clock’s 2.0 update and Cursed War expansion changed balance and build variety.
How builds work in Hell Clock
Builds come from combining skills, Blessings, Relics, and progression choices—not from choosing a skill in isolation. The official Steam description presents evolving builds through Blessing combinations and upgrading or corrupting Relics. A useful starting question is what role you want your build to fill: ranged clearing, sustain, or a mobile utility hybrid.
Which build should you try?
| Archetype | Role | What the cited guide recommends | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repeater Elemental | Accessible ranged clearing | GamerBlurb’s 2025 guide calls it an easy beginner option, citing commonly found Relics and quick clearing without complex combos. | Players who want to attack from range and keep setup simple. |
| Double Knives Lifesteal | Sustain | The same guide describes Double Knives as high risk/high reward and recommends Lifesteal for continued healing during longer runs. | Players willing to engage at close range and learn enemy patterns. |
| Double Knives with Reflexes | Sustain plus mana utility | The guide suggests Reflexes as a complement: its hits generate mana, helping maintain Double Knives uptime. | Players who want to support a main damage skill with utility rather than add several competing core skills. |
| Main skill with Shadow Dash | Mobility and utility | The guide connects Shadow Dash with Relics that increase maximum mana or grant temporary damage after a dash. | Players looking to add movement-linked utility to a central damage skill. |
These descriptions reflect the cited guide’s recommendations, not current head-to-head testing. It does not establish a strongest build, clear-speed ranking, or complete loadout.
Repeater Elemental: a simple ranged build to try
GamerBlurb’s 2025 guide calls Repeater Elemental its easiest beginner build. It frames the Repeater as a safe ranged choice and says the associated Relics are common, with fast clearing that does not depend on elaborate combos. That makes it a reasonable archetype to try if you want a direct ranged approach.

- HOW TO PLAY: The Dealer draws a Scenario Card and reads it aloud. The other players choose two of their Action Cards and play them, facedown. The Dealer shuffles the Action Cards and picks the one they definitely would not do, saying "HELL NO!" Then, they pick the Action Card they definitely would do, saying "HELL YEAH!"
- SITUATION: While scuba diving, your wound starts bleeding, and sharks begin to circle. What do you do?
- ACTION: Ask for an autograph! Hell No
- ACTION: Use your jetpack to escape! Hell Yeah
- REPEAT PLAY: With 135 Situation Cards and 387 Action Cards you'll never run out of wild predicaments
Use it as a starting framework, not a promise about post-2.0 performance. The guide predates both the July 2026 Cursed War expansion and the 2.0 balance changes, and it does not provide a fully specified current loadout.
Double Knives Lifesteal: choose sustain at close range
The same guide presents Double Knives as a higher-risk, higher-reward option. Its Lifesteal version is recommended for continued healing on longer runs or for players learning enemy patterns. The role comes with a trade-off: unlike a ranged archetype, it asks you to work closer to threats.
Rank #2
The guide’s suggested Reflexes pairing adds a mana utility angle. It says Reflexes hits generate mana, which can help maintain Double Knives uptime. Treat that as a proposed synergy from the guide, rather than a guaranteed result across every version or setup.
Reflexes and Shadow Dash: add utility without losing the core
If you already have a main damage skill in mind, utility skills can support it rather than compete for the whole build. GamerBlurb recommends Reflexes alongside Double Knives for mana generation. Its Shadow Dash option instead points to Relics that increase maximum mana or grant temporary damage after a dash.

- Party game for adults: celebrate the absurdity of being a kid with this hilarious party game about the not-so-precious moments of growing up
- It's ok to laugh at kid fails: take a time out and play This laugh-out-loud party game that's every bit as weird as you and your friends are
- Pair a photo with a caption: admit it: kids can drive you insane. Laughing makes it all better! So take a break and have fun creating these memes about ridiculous kids
- Take turns being the judge: players take turns being the judge deciding who wins the round; the player with the most photo cards wins the raising Hell card game
- Includes 372 cards: The raising Hell party game includes 300 caption cards and 72 photo cards; The player with the best caption for each photo round wins
These are distinct ways to round out an archetype: Reflexes is presented as a mana-support choice, while Shadow Dash is tied to movement and Relic effects. The source does not supply patch-current numbers or a universal rule for when either combination is best.
Build-making principles for skills and Relics
A July 2025 Steam community post offers practical progression advice, but it is player guidance from before the expansion—not an official formula. Its suggestions are useful as things to consider while assembling a build:
Rank #4
- Models supplied assembled and unpainted. We recommend washing resin models in warm, soapy water before painting.
- This exciting expansion tells the story of Hellboy’s time in Mexico. In between all the tequila, Hellboy had to deal with vampires, ghosts and a giant wrestling bat! It’s never boring being in the B.P.R.D. This expansion adds exciting new enemies and agents to your games, with new case files based on the story of Hellboy’s time in Mexico. Requires Hellboy: The Board Game to play.
- Includes: 1 x Luchador Hellboy playable Agent 3 x Luchador Brothers 15 x minions 4 x Agent Cards 4 x Encounter Cards 4 x Requsition Cards 4 x Enemy Cards 4 x Deck of Doom Cards 4 x Case Files Card tiles and tokens
- Invest early Great Bell choices in Reliquary Size and Skill Level.
- Upgrade useful Relics and recycle unused ones for Soulstones.
- Match Relic damage bonuses to the skill doing most of your damage.
- For attack-oriented Marksman or melee skills, the post suggests prioritizing attack speed; for spells, it suggests cooldown speed, then critical chance and critical damage.
- Do not ignore defenses, and look for cross-skill synergies between skill upgrades and Relics.
- Focus early skill upgrades on one or two main abilities rather than spreading investment across many active skills; this is also the 2025 guide’s recommendation.
These are starting heuristics, not validated rules for every combination. Choose around the actual skills and Relics you have, and check their in-game descriptions when effects or balance change.

Rogue Snail’s official 2.0 announcement, published July 2, 2026, says that “campaign progression is now faster, endgame is deeper, Ignite, Bleed and Shock are stronger, and build variety across all activities has been massively increased.” Those changes matter when using older build advice: a guide written before 2.0 cannot establish which combinations are strongest now, especially for status-effect builds.

Steam lists Cursed War as an expansion released July 9, 2026, and says it requires the base game. Official 2.0.1.0 notes published July 16, 2026 address unintended Relic and skill behavior, another reason not to treat an older loadout as a fixed current meta. Check current in-game skill and Relic descriptions and the latest patch notes before relying on exact interactions.
For a specific example of a skill-plus-Relic interaction after the expansion, PC Gamer’s coverage describes the writer using Tupã’s Wrath lightning bolts with a Relic that empowers skeletal minions. The article also notes that harder modes add enemy resistances and other modifiers. This is one reported play example, not a complete build recommendation or universal ranking.
How to choose for your run
- Want an accessible ranged archetype? Start with Repeater Elemental, while remembering the recommendation comes from a pre-2.0 guide.
- Want healing and are comfortable at close range? Try the guide’s Double Knives Lifesteal concept; consider Reflexes for its suggested mana utility.
- Want mobility or another utility layer? Explore Shadow Dash with Relics whose descriptions support the effect you want.
- Taking on endgame or harder modes? Build around the skills and Relics available to you, account for enemy modifiers, and verify that older synergies still work in your version.
No cited source provides a patch-current head-to-head test, win rates, clear-speed comparisons, or definitive post-2.0 loadouts. The archetypes here are therefore best treated as role-based starting points rather than a ranked tier list.
