Start by choosing the output device you actually use, setting a comfortable master volume, and matching Audio Mix to headphones, earbuds, or speakers. If you use headphones, test Enhanced Headphone Mode; keep the changes that make directional cues clearer and the overall sound comfortable in your own matches.
Recommended starting settings
- Speaker/Headphones Game Sound Device: Select the headphones, earbuds, or speakers you are listening through. If game audio is missing or unexpectedly quiet, check this first.
- Master Game Volume: Set a level that is comfortable while keeping gameplay details audible. There is no source-backed universal numeric value.
- Audio Mix: Choose a mix suited to your output device. Activision’s Black Ops 6 controls and settings guide, published October 23, 2024, recommends using Audio Mix to manage the sound and says to leave category volume sliders alone if you are unsure.
- Enhanced Headphone Mode: If you use headphones or earbuds, compare the mode enabled and disabled under similar conditions. Keep it on only if the spatial presentation works better for you.
- Other volume categories: Leave them unchanged at first. If a specific sound is masking something important, make small adjustments and reassess rather than applying an arbitrary preset of slider values.
These are a starting point, not a guaranteed competitive configuration. The official guidance does not identify one Audio Mix preset as best for everyone.
How to choose an Audio Mix
Use the mix that best fits your listening setup, then compare alternatives in actual play. Third-party guides have recommended different presets, including Treyarch Mix and headphone-focused options such as Headphone Bass Boost; those are subjective suggestions, not official winners or published benchmarks.
When comparing mixes, keep the listening conditions as consistent as possible and judge them by:

- Whether directional cues are easier to locate on your headphones, earbuds, or speakers.
- Whether footsteps and other useful sounds remain intelligible amid effects and background audio.
- Whether loud or sharp effects are comfortable at your chosen master volume.
- Whether dialogue and teammate voice chat remain easy to hear.
- Whether the overall sound suits your hearing profile.
A mix can make some sounds more prominent while making others less comfortable or clear. Keep the setting that works for your setup and preferences; a preset name alone cannot establish that it will improve your results.
What Enhanced Headphone Mode does
Enhanced Headphone Mode uses HRTF-based spatial audio through Embody Immerse Spatial Audio. In Activision’s October 14, 2024 audio feature article, Treyarch audio engineer William Cornell describes HRTF as simulating how the shape of a listener’s head and ears affects sound before it is heard. Activision says the feature works with any headphone or earbud model and offers a Universal HRTF profile, with a personalized profile as an option.

The feature is worth testing if you want to assess spatial cues, but it does not guarantee that you will hear footsteps sooner or gain a competitive advantage. Treyarch’s audio design also uses spatial acoustics and dynamic sound priority to make selected threats and environmental cues more perceptible; those are design goals, not a promise that every player will hear every cue in every situation.

Reduce Tinnitus Sound
This changes the tinnitus-like shellshock sound associated with concussion and flash effects to a duller cue; it does not remove the cue. Activision describes both options in its October 24, 2024 accessibility update. The same article reports that nearly half of players access the accessibility settings menu, underscoring that these controls are relevant to a broad range of players.

- Confirm that Speaker/Headphones Game Sound Device matches the device you are using.
- Raise Master Game Volume only to a comfortable level, then check whether the sound is routed to the expected headphones, earbuds, or speakers.
- If sound is present but particular cues are hard to distinguish, compare Audio Mix options before changing multiple category sliders.
The official settings and feature descriptions cited here date from October 2024. They document the game’s published settings guidance and feature baseline, but do not establish that menu labels or availability are unchanged on every platform in October 2026.
