You do not need a capture card to play Nintendo Switch on a TV: connect the dock’s HDMI OUT to the TV’s HDMI input. A capture card is for sending Switch video and audio to a computer to record or stream. The console must be docked for this workflow; the Switch Lite cannot be docked and is not compatible with game capture devices, according to OBS Project.
Do you need a capture card to connect a Switch to a TV?
No. For ordinary TV play, connect the dock directly to the display. Nintendo’s instructions show the dock’s HDMI OUT connected to a TV or monitor’s HDMI input. A capture card adds no necessary function to this setup.

- Place the Switch console in its dock.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the dock’s HDMI OUT port to an HDMI input on the TV or monitor.
- Select that HDMI input on the display.
See Nintendo’s TV connection instructions. If by “computer” you mean using a computer monitor as the display, the key question is whether that monitor has an HDMI input. The available documentation here does not compare other monitor-connection methods.
When do you need a capture card?
Use one when you want to record or stream gameplay on a computer. The docked Switch sends video and audio over HDMI to a capture card’s HDMI IN; the card connects to the computer, where capture software such as OBS receives the signal. OBS explains that a game capture device is the hardware used to capture console footage in its console capture FAQ.

- Connect the capture card to the computer using its supported interface.
- Open compatible capture software and select the capture device as the video source.
- If you want to play on a separate TV or monitor at the same time, connect the card’s HDMI OUT to that display, if the card supports HDMI passthrough.
OBS Project states that the Nintendo Switch family is compatible with game capture devices when docked, while the Nintendo Switch Lite is not compatible because it cannot be docked. A capture card cannot overcome the Lite’s lack of docked video output.

- Capture quality: Check the resolution and frame rate the card can record or stream. These describe the computer capture, not necessarily the signal sent to a display.
- HDMI passthrough: If you want to play on a TV while capturing, check the separate resolution and frame-rate specifications for the card’s HDMI OUT.
- Computer connection: Confirm that your computer has a compatible port and that the card works with your operating system and capture software.
- Regional price and availability: Verify the current listing for your location; those details can change and are not established by the specifications cited here.
Example: Elgato Game Capture HD60 X
The Elgato HD60 X product page lists HDMI input and output, a USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 connection rated at 5 Gbps, and compatibility with applications including OBS. Elgato lists capture up to 1080p60 HDR. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.
Keep capture and passthrough figures separate when comparing any card: capture describes what can be recorded or streamed to the computer, while passthrough describes what the card can send onward to a TV or monitor. Elgato documents both categories for the HD60 X; check its current specifications against the resolution and frame rate you actually need.
