There is no reliable single average price for every game on Steam. The figure changes depending on which games count, which country’s store you use, whether you mean regular or discounted prices, and when prices are measured. A recent benchmark for top-selling new releases found declining prices from 2023 to 2025, but it does not describe Steam’s full catalog.
What does the average Steam game cost?
No current, globally representative average for the full Steam catalog is established by the available sources. A catalog-wide figure would need to define the games included, the region and currency, whether it measures list prices or prices actually paid, and the date of the snapshot.
For a narrower benchmark, a GameDiscoverCo analysis reported by GamesRadar in November 2025 examined the first month of sales for the top 50 new, non-free-to-play Steam releases each month from February 2023 through October 2025. In that sample, mean first-month price fell 2% over the period, while the median fell 20% when releases were ranked by units sold. When ranked by revenue, the mean fell 2% and the median fell 14%.
Those are changes over time in a selected group of popular new releases—not an average price for all Steam games, or a measure of what every player paid. The median is the middle price in a set; the mean is the arithmetic average, which can be pulled upward by more expensive titles.

Why Steam prices vary by region
Steam’s regional pricing makes a single global price harder to define. Valve says Steam supports prices in 37 currencies across four region groups, and developers choose the prices they enter for each currency and group. Its regional pricing documentation describes three conversion approaches: exchange-rate only, purchasing-power only, and a multi-variable approach that also considers comparable local entertainment costs. The public data used for the conversion methods was current as of January 2026.
Valve’s tools provide suggestions; they do not establish one mandatory global price. SteamDB’s March 31, 2026 account of Valve’s pricing update says developers can choose among the conversion methods, combine them across regions, or set prices themselves. Consequently, even two storefronts looking at the same title can show different local prices.

How to tell whether a Steam discount is good
A store-wide average cannot tell you whether a particular game is a good deal. Compare the title’s current price with its own earlier prices, using the same region and currency. SteamDB explains that an individual app page includes a price table and history graph in its FAQ. It also warns that its data is provided as-is, without guarantees of accuracy, completeness, or timeliness.
- Open the game’s individual app page on SteamDB.
- Check the price table and history graph for the relevant country or currency.
- Compare the current price with the game’s earlier prices, and note the region and date of your check.
A separate tracker page describes daily recording for 100 games beginning July 2, 2026, as well as live regional checks. That bounded sample, described on SteamDashboard’s price-history page, cannot establish an all-games average or a lifetime low for titles outside its recorded coverage.

What the new-release trend means for buyers
The 2023–2025 benchmark suggests the middle price in its selected group of top-selling new releases declined more than the mean. It does not show that every new Steam game became cheaper, explain why the prices changed, or predict what a specific game will cost. It is best used as context for that release segment, not as a personal budget rule.
Simon Carless of GameDiscoverCo, quoted in the GamesRadar report, described the strategic pressure on some new intellectual property: “We think if you have a new IP you’re making from scratch, isn’t a deep strategy game, and isn’t from a pedigreed team, charging >$25 is getting trickier,” as players compare it with lower-priced indie games and $60–$70 franchises. That is commentary about a particular pricing challenge, not a universal threshold or a statement of the average Steam price.
