For a general special-attacking Charizard in Pokémon Sword and Shield, a useful starting set is Timid with Solar Power, Fire Blast, Air Slash, Focus Blast, and Solar Beam, backed by 252 Special Attack / 252 Speed / 4 Defense EVs. It is not universally best: the right moves depend on your format, whether you can use ordinary Dynamax or Gigantamax, and how reliably your team can set sun.
General special-attacker moveset
GameWith’s Sword and Shield guide recommends this special-attacker build. The guide was last updated August 21, 2022, so treat it as a practical set recommendation, not a current tournament ranking.

Solar Power raises Charizard’s Special Attack in harsh sunlight, but also causes end-of-turn damage. The ability is most attractive when your team can establish sun or Charizard can set it with Max Flare while Dynamaxed.
What each move contributes
Fire Blast or Flamethrower
Fire Blast is the higher-power Fire-type STAB option. Flamethrower trades power for better accuracy and is the safer choice when missing would cost you more than reduced damage. When Charizard uses ordinary Dynamax, either Fire move becomes Max Flare, which sets harsh sunlight.

Air Slash
Air Slash supplies Flying-type STAB. As a Max Move during ordinary Dynamax, it becomes Max Airstream, which raises the Speed of Charizard and its partner in VGC doubles. This gives the move a team-support role beyond its damage.
Focus Blast
Focus Blast provides coverage against Rock types, a dangerous matchup for Charizard, but its accuracy makes it a riskier choice. Keep it when that coverage matters more than consistency.

Solar Beam
Solar Beam offers Grass-type coverage against Water types. Without sunlight it normally takes two turns; in harsh sunlight it fires in one. If you cannot count on sun, the charging turn can make this slot unreliable.
Overheat
Overheat is a higher-power alternative that lowers Charizard’s Special Attack after use. GameWith presents it as a finishing move for use after Dynamax ends, rather than a straightforward replacement for a repeatable attack.

Ordinary Dynamax and Gigantamax are different choices
Ordinary Dynamax turns Fire-type moves into Max Flare and Flying-type moves into Max Airstream. The official Pokémon strategy article uses Charizard as an example of Max Flare setting sun for Solar Power, and notes Max Airstream’s Speed-control value in VGC doubles. Those effects make the standard set’s Fire Blast and Air Slash especially useful when Charizard can Dynamax.
Gigantamax is available only to eligible specimens and grants a species-specific G-Max Move that ordinary Dynamax Pokémon cannot use. For Gigantamax Charizard, Fire-type attacks become G-Max Wildfire. The Pokémon Company International says: “G-Max Wildfire doesn’t just deal damage to an opponent when it hits—it will also continue to deal damage for four turns to any Pokémon that isn’t Fire type!” The official Gigantamax Charizard page lists its ability as Blaze, not Solar Power; do not assume the Solar Power version of the standard set applies to that Gigantamax specimen.

Adjust the set to your format and team
- Singles or doubles: Choose moves for the format you are playing. In VGC doubles, Air Slash’s Max Airstream can support a partner’s Speed, while spread damage can matter more than a single-target move.
- Sun support: Solar Power and Solar Beam both benefit from harsh sunlight, but Solar Power also costs Charizard end-of-turn health. Consider whether Charizard can set sun with Max Flare or a teammate can provide it.
- Reliability or coverage: Choose Flamethrower over Fire Blast if accuracy matters more; retain Focus Blast when Rock-type coverage is worth the risk.
- Dynamax choice: Standard Dynamax offers Max Flare and Max Airstream. Gigantamax Charizard instead uses G-Max Wildfire, so the two forms should not be treated as interchangeable.
For older format-specific context, Smogon’s Sword and Shield VGC22 entry discusses Heat Wave as a useful spread attack when Charizard is not Gigantamaxed and Charti Berry as protection against Rock-type attacks. Those are VGC22 recommendations, not universal advice or confirmation of current 2026 rules or tournament performance.
