For most streamers, OBS Studio is the best place to start: it is free, open source, and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. If you want a broader Windows production suite with documented green- and blue-screen controls, consider vMix. If you want to remove a webcam background without a physical screen and have a compatible NVIDIA RTX system, NVIDIA Broadcast is a different, AI-based option.
These tools solve related but different problems. A conventional chroma key removes a selected color from a camera image; AI background removal identifies the person and separates them from the scene. There is no verified head-to-head test establishing one option as the best performer in key quality or resource use.
Which chroma key software should you choose?
| Software | Best fit | Background method | Platform and cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Streamers who want a flexible, no-cost production starting point | Live-production software; verify the current chroma-key filter workflow in OBS documentation before setup | Windows, macOS, and Linux; free and open source |
| vMix | Windows users who want a fuller live-production suite and documented physical-screen keying controls | Green/blue chroma key, virtual sets, tolerance controls, and a filter for green/blue halos | Windows; lifetime licensing and subscriptions are listed, along with a 60-day full-featured trial. Check the current product page for terms and prices. |
| NVIDIA Broadcast | Windows users with supported RTX-class hardware who want virtual background removal without a screen | AI webcam background removal, replacement, or blur; not a conventional physical-screen keyer | Windows 10 64-bit and a supported RTX-class GPU are listed; free availability and current requirements should be checked on NVIDIA’s official page. |
Choose OBS Studio for a flexible starting point
OBS is a general live-production application built around scenes and sources. The official product page lists Windows, Mac, and Linux downloads and describes support for sources such as webcams, capture cards, images, and windows. Its system-requirements page cautions that a compatible system does not guarantee that the machine can stream or record successfully; actual capacity depends on settings and scene complexity.
Choose vMix for documented green- or blue-screen production controls
vMix is a Windows-based production suite with green/blue keying, virtual sets, tolerance adjustment, and a filter intended to address colored halos. Its feature set is broader than a single webcam effect, so it may suit productions with multiple inputs or more extensive live mixing. Check its current system guidance and licensing before committing.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose NVIDIA Broadcast for AI background removal
NVIDIA Broadcast processes a webcam feed to remove the background and replace it with an image or video, or blur it. It creates virtual camera and audio devices that can be selected in supported applications, including OBS. Its effects use system resources; NVIDIA says the impact varies with GPU, game, camera resolution and frame rate, and enabled effects.
Chroma key and AI background removal are not the same
A physical chroma-key setup uses a uniformly colored green or blue background and removes that selected color from the camera image. It is a natural fit for a gaming stream when you want to place the camera image over gameplay while keeping the room out of view. Lighting and a clean, evenly colored background are practical considerations, but there is no universal verified lighting ratio or setting that guarantees a clean result.

AI background removal does not depend on a green or blue screen. NVIDIA Broadcast identifies the webcam subject and separates them from the background in software. That can avoid buying or setting up a physical backdrop, but it requires the supported hardware and may affect available system resources.
How to choose for a gaming stream
- Check your operating system and hardware first. OBS is cross-platform. vMix is Windows-based. NVIDIA Broadcast’s listed requirements include a supported RTX-class GPU and Windows 10 64-bit.
- Decide whether you need a physical screen. Use conventional chroma key for a green/blue backdrop; consider NVIDIA Broadcast if you want AI removal without one.
- Match the software to the production. A single webcam over a game may not need a full production suite. Multiple production inputs, virtual sets, streaming, and recording can make vMix’s broader scope relevant.
- Test the complete scene on your own machine. Camera, movement, room conditions, resolution, frame rate, and system load all affect the result. No independent, reproducible comparison establishes a winner for key edges, motion handling, output quality, or resource use.
Set up and test your background before going live
For OBS Studio
- Download OBS for your operating system from the official OBS site.
- Build the scene you plan to stream. Add the game or capture source and your webcam, then check their order and framing in the preview.
- Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard to get a starting configuration. OBS says performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; compatible hardware alone does not guarantee successful streaming.
- Confirm the current chroma-key filter controls in OBS documentation. The official pages reviewed here do not establish exact menu steps or recommended values, so do not rely on a universal preset. Adjust against your camera image and inspect edges during movement.
- Run a private or unlisted test before a public stream. Check the key while moving, speaking, and changing the game scene, and watch for uneven removal or color spill.
For vMix
- Check the current system requirements and install the Windows version from the official vMix site.
- Add your camera input and open the chroma-key controls described in the vMix guide. Select green or blue to match the backdrop.
- Adjust tolerance against the actual camera feed. Inspect the subject’s outline and movement rather than assuming a preset will fit every camera and room.
- Use the available green/blue halo filter if needed. Review the result at the output size you intend to stream and check that the subject does not disappear into the background.
- Trial the entire production before going live. vMix advertises a 60-day full-featured trial; confirm current licensing and trial terms on its product page.
For NVIDIA Broadcast with OBS or another supported app
- Verify the current NVIDIA requirements before installing. The reviewed NVIDIA FAQ lists RTX 2060, Quadro RTX 3000, or TITAN RTX and above, 8 GB RAM, Windows 10 64-bit, and driver 570.xx or higher. Requirements can change.
- Install NVIDIA Broadcast and choose the background effect—replacement or blur—on the camera feed.
- In the streaming application, select the NVIDIA Broadcast virtual camera as the camera source. NVIDIA documents compatibility with supported apps including OBS.
- Test with the game and all intended effects running. Effects consume resources, and their impact depends on the GPU, camera resolution and frame rate, game, and effects enabled.
Common problems and what to check
- Parts of the subject vanish or the outline looks rough: Recheck the selected key color and tune the controls against the live camera feed. Uneven background color and movement can make the result harder to refine.
- Green or blue edges remain around the subject: Inspect for color spill and halos. vMix documents a green/blue halo filter; adjust it while watching the actual output rather than assuming it will solve every setup.
- The virtual background looks unstable or the stream struggles: Check which effects are enabled and test the camera, game, and stream together. NVIDIA notes that resource impact varies by hardware and workload.
- NVIDIA Broadcast is unavailable or its virtual camera does not appear: Confirm the operating system, GPU, memory, and driver against NVIDIA’s current requirements, then verify that the streaming app supports and has selected the Broadcast camera device.
- OBS runs but cannot maintain the intended stream: Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard and reassess encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS explicitly warns that meeting minimum compatibility requirements is not a performance guarantee.
- The production works in preview but not as expected live: Test the full scene and output before going public. Check the camera framing, background removal during motion, and system load while the game and stream are active.
Keep the stream running without leaving a computer on
Chroma-key software handles the camera and production image; it does not by itself keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running around the clock. If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel built from uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home, uploads stream as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
