Want to build your own city on iPhone or iPad? The right pick depends on whether you want hands-on zoning, an ongoing online city, turn-based strategy, or relaxed creative building. This is a source-based shortlist rather than a hands-on test ranking; check your local App Store listing for current price, availability, device requirements, and in-app purchases.
Choose by the kind of city-building you want
“City builder” covers several different styles on iOS: conventional urban simulation, online progression, empire strategy, puzzle construction, and open-ended creative building. These candidates are grouped by that distinction rather than presented as a tested ranking.
For a conventional city simulation: Pocket City
Pocket City’s US App Store listing describes residential, commercial, and industrial zoning, along with parks, recreation, crime, and disasters. It says “No microtransactions or long wait times!”—a useful fit if you want a paid-entry game without the monetization or wait pressure associated with some free-to-download games. Apple’s US listing displayed $2.99 when accessed on October 8, 2026; that is a time- and region-specific price, not a worldwide or guaranteed current quote. The listing’s subtitle is “Build your own city as mayor!”
For an ongoing online city: SimCity BuildIt
SimCity BuildIt is the connected city-management option in this shortlist. The March 2026 roundup describes clubs, competition, and city disasters, as well as friction around progression and resources. It is free to download with in-app purchases, so check the current listing and consider whether that model suits you; free entry alone does not explain how progression or spending works.

TheoTown is recommended by the March 2026 roundup for players who want to control many details of construction and connections. Treat it as the more involved management candidate in this list, but verify its current App Store listing, in-app purchase structure, and update status before deciding.
For compact strategy with city-building elements: The Battle of Polytopia
The Battle of Polytopia is closer to turn-based strategy and expansion than to a conventional urban simulator. Consider it if you want compact, competitive strategy and city-building as part of a wider game of expansion, rather than a focus on zoning and city services.

For a deeper turn-based empire game: Sid Meier’s Civilization VI
Civilization VI is another adjacent strategy choice, not a pure city simulator. Its city-building sits within a broader turn-based empire game. Confirm current iOS or iPadOS compatibility, purchase model, and device requirements in your regional listing before buying.
For creative building or puzzle play: Pocket City 2, Teeny Tiny Town, and Townscaper
Apple’s Philippines storefront collection describes Pocket City 2 as a metropolis builder and simulator, Teeny Tiny Town as a puzzle city builder, and Townscaper as an instant town-building toy. These descriptions point to lighter or more creative alternatives to conventional city management. Their appearance in a Philippines collection does not establish availability in other storefronts.

The March 2026 roundup also includes Megapolis, Forge of Empires, City Island 5, and DomiNations. It characterizes them around economies, progression across eras, island expansion, or historical strategy. Its assessments of crashes, difficulty, and monetization are editorial judgments, not independently verified current conditions; check recent reviews and the live listing before relying on them.

Check availability, price, and compatibility before downloading
App Store catalogs vary by country. Apple’s US and Philippines editorial collections feature different titles, and Apple notes that some apps may not appear because of app restrictions. Search your own storefront rather than assuming a recommendation is available where you live.
Before downloading or buying, verify these details on the game’s current local App Store page:
Best Value
- 7.9 inch Retina display, Wide color display (P3), True Tone display technology
- Touch ID
- FaceTime HD and iSight cameras
- Apple Pencil (1st generation) support
- Lightning connector
- Availability and current price
- Whether it includes in-app purchases
- Age rating and supported iPhone or iPad models
- Required iOS or iPadOS version
- Most recent update date and any recent service or compatibility changes
The broad candidate list comes from an editorial roundup last updated March 27, 2026; the Pocket City price is a US storefront snapshot from October 8, 2026. Those dates matter because game availability, pricing, and compatibility can change.
