Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Explorer is the best starting background for most first-time Core Keeper players because extra movement, a lantern and food make the opening safer and less frustrating. Fighter, Ranger, Mage, Warlock and Demolitionist are better if you already know the combat style you want. The important qualification is that Core Keeper has no permanent character classes: your background only affects the first minutes, while 12 skills, talent trees and changeable equipment determine the build you eventually play.
Core Keeper does not have permanent classes
Choosing a “class” at character creation is really choosing a starting background. Backgrounds provide a small skill bonus and a few items, but they do not lock weapons, armor, talents or future progression. A Fighter can become a mage, a Ranger can specialize in explosives, and a Nomad can eventually build any end-game setup.

Core Keeper has 12 skills: Mining, Running, Melee combat, Vitality, Crafting, Range combat, Gardening, Fishing, Cooking, Magic, Summoning and Explosives. Each skill has an eight-node talent tree. Every fifth level in a skill awards a talent point, and reaching level 100 grants five additional points. Talent allocations can be reset for 200 Ancient Coins, so an early choice is a starting convenience rather than a permanent commitment.
That makes “best class” a question about the opening hours: which package gives you the safest, fastest or most enjoyable start for the way you intend to play?

Starting backgrounds ranked
| Rank | Background | Starting bonus | Starting equipment | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Explorer | +3 Running | Small Lantern; three Food Rations | Most forgiving all-purpose opening |
| 2 | Fighter | +3 Melee | Copper Sword; three Food Rations | Immediate close-range combat |
| 3 | Ranger | +3 Range combat | Wood Bow; three Food Rations | Distance fighting and careful positioning |
| 4 | Mage | +3 Magic | Simple Staff; three Food Rations | Spell-focused play |
| 5 | Warlock | +3 Summoning | Tome of the Dark; three Food Rations | Minions and magic hybrids |
| 6 | Demolitionist | +3 Explosives | Ten Crude Bombs; ten Grenades | Area damage and terrain clearing |
| 7 | Miner | +3 Mining | Copper Pickaxe; three Food Rations | Fast early tunneling and ore gathering |
| 8 | Chef | +3 Cooking | Cooking Pot; eight Mushrooms | Food-focused support and self-sufficiency |
| 8 | Gardener | +3 Gardening | Copper Hoe; Watering Can | Farming and reliable supplies |
| 8 | Fisherman | +3 Fishing | Wood Fishing Rod; three Food Rations | Fishing, economy and sustain |
| 9 | Nomad | None | None | Challenge runs or role-play |
The ordering reflects practical opening value, not an official tier list. Background bonuses are quickly overtaken by normal skill leveling and equipment, so a lower-ranked option can still be the right choice for a specific playstyle.
1. Explorer: best general first start
Explorer begins with +3 Running, a Small Lantern and three Food Rations. The lantern immediately improves visibility, while movement speed helps with scouting, retreating from enemies and carrying out the first mining trips. Those benefits matter before you have a settled base, reliable armor or a large food supply.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchRunning can eventually provide up to 10% movement speed at level 100. That maximum is a long-term skill result rather than a special Explorer-only effect, but starting with +3 Running lets an explorer-oriented player begin building toward it immediately.
Choose Explorer when you are learning the map, playing solo without a partner to cover mistakes, or unsure whether you will prefer melee, ranged or magic combat. The recommendation is an editorial judgment based on early mobility and visibility; it is not an official ranking. Once your equipment and talents develop, the original background matters very little.
2. Fighter: easiest close-range opening
Fighter starts with +3 Melee, a Copper Sword and three Food Rations. It is the most direct choice: equip the sword, approach enemies and learn attack timing without managing ammunition or spell resources.
Melee is comfortable for players who want to stay near a target and make steady progress through early caves. The trade-off is exposure. You must enter enemy attack range, so movement, healing food and retreat routes matter more than they do for a careful ranged character. Fighter is especially suitable if the phrase “best class” means “I want to fight immediately with minimal setup.”
Do not treat the +3 Melee bonus as a commitment to a melee-only character. You can level Range combat, Magic or any other skill later and redirect talent points if your preferences change.

3. Ranger: safe damage from a distance
Ranger gives +3 Range combat, a Wood Bow and three Food Rations. The bow lets you practice attacking while moving and keeping enemies at a distance from the first minutes of a new world.
Ranged play rewards deliberate positioning. One Range talent grants 5% range damage per point after you have stood still for three seconds, so the tree supports players who establish a safe firing position before taking the shot. That bonus also creates a clear decision: hold position for higher damage when the area is secure, or keep moving when enemies can close the gap.
Ranger is a strong solo option for players who are comfortable watching space around them. Ammunition and line-of-sight management add more logistical work than Fighter’s sword, but distance can compensate by reducing the number of hits you take.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Mage: direct spell scaling
Mage starts with +3 Magic, a Simple Staff and three Food Rations. Pick it when you want your first combat decisions to revolve around spell attacks and magic-focused equipment rather than bows or blades.
The Magic skill increases magic damage by 0.5% per level, reaching up to 50% at level 100 according to the skills reference. That scaling gives a clear reason to continue investing in Magic after the starting bonus has stopped being noticeable.
Mage generally asks you to balance damage with positioning. You still need a plan for enemies that reach you, and a staff does not remove the need for food, armor or an escape route. It is the best starting background for a player who already knows that spellcasting, not merely a safe first weapon, is the goal.
5. Warlock: minions backed by magic
Warlock begins with +3 Summoning, a Tome of the Dark and three Food Rations. The background is aimed at players who want summoned allies to occupy enemies while the player supports the fight.

The Summoning talent tree includes a node that increases minion damage by 10% of the player’s magic-damage increase per point. This creates a hybrid incentive: improving Magic can also improve the value of a summoning-focused setup. Warlock therefore suits players who enjoy managing a layered build instead of relying on one weapon type.
Minion play can make solo encounters more forgiving because enemies have another target, but it is not automatically safer in every room. You still need to control positioning, keep your character alive and invest in the skills that make the build function. Choose Warlock for the playstyle, not because the opening +3 permanently defines your character.
6. Demolitionist: explosive clearing and area damage
Demolitionist starts with +3 Explosives, ten Crude Bombs and ten Grenades. No other background supplies such a large immediate stock of area-damage tools, making this the most distinctive opening package.
Bombs and grenades are useful when several enemies cluster or when you want to clear terrain quickly. They also impose a resource burden: once the starting supply is gone, continued explosive play depends on obtaining or crafting replacements. Use the background as a convenience start for experimentation and fast clearing, not as proof that you must spend the entire game as a demolition specialist.
Demolitionist is most appealing to veterans who understand blast placement and to players who value speed over conserving materials. New players should remember that an explosion can solve one problem while creating another if it removes useful terrain or leaves them without a retreat path.
7. Miner: resource-first progression
Miner provides +3 Mining, a Copper Pickaxe and three Food Rations. It is the practical choice for players who want to spend the opening gathering ore, widening tunnels and establishing a stronger base before focusing on combat.
The pickaxe accelerates the first resource loop, but it does not make Miner a permanent economic class. Mining, combat and crafting can all be developed on the same character. Select Miner when your first priority is infrastructure rather than a particular weapon.

8. Chef, Gardener and Fisherman: support-oriented starts
Chef
Chef starts with +3 Cooking, a Cooking Pot and eight Mushrooms. The larger food-oriented package suits players who enjoy preparing supplies, supporting a group or making a self-sufficient base. It is less immediately combat-focused than Fighter or Ranger, but food production can be a satisfying central activity.

Gardener
Gardener receives +3 Gardening, a Copper Hoe and a Watering Can. Choose it if planting, harvesting and maintaining a dependable supply chain sounds more appealing than rushing into caves. The tools make the opening farming loop available immediately.
Fisherman
Fisherman starts with +3 Fishing, a Wood Fishing Rod and three Food Rations. It is tailored to players who want to fish early, build an economy around catches or play a slower support role in co-op.
Chef, Gardener and Fisherman are useful in cooperative or self-sufficient runs, but their opening advantages are not permanent locks. A combat-focused player can still develop these skills later, and a support player can take up a weapon whenever needed.
9. Nomad: a deliberate blank slate
Nomad has no starting bonus and no starting equipment. That makes it the least efficient opening for a first-time player: you give up the free tool, weapon or supplies that make the first minutes smoother.
For an experienced player, the absence of a package can be the point. Nomad works for challenge runs, role-play or a self-imposed progression in which every early item must be earned. Pick it because you want that constraint, not because it offers hidden flexibility that other backgrounds lack.
Which background fits each combat style?
| Preferred approach | Recommended start | Positioning demand | Resource or ammunition burden | Area damage | When the synergy appears |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Close combat | Fighter | High proximity; learn attack timing and retreats | Low ammunition burden | Usually focused on nearby targets | Immediately, with the Copper Sword |
| Distance fighting | Ranger | High; maintain space and exploit safe firing positions | Bow and ammunition management | Usually focused unless equipment adds it | Immediately, with the Wood Bow; Range talents add depth |
| Spellcasting | Mage | Moderate; avoid being cornered while casting | Magic-focused equipment and supplies | Depends on spells and equipment | Immediately, with the Simple Staff; Magic scales to +50% damage at level 100 |
| Minions | Warlock | Moderate; direct enemies and keep your character safe | Summoning and magic investment | Minions provide distributed pressure | Early with the Tome of the Dark; hybrid scaling grows with Magic |
| Explosives | Demolitionist | Moderate; place blasts safely and preserve escape routes | High once the ten bombs and ten grenades are spent | High against groups and terrain | Immediately, while starting explosives last |
| Resource gathering | Miner | Low combat focus; plan routes and storage | Pickaxe durability and gathered materials | Not the purpose of the start | Immediately, with the Copper Pickaxe |
How skills and talents replace a fixed class
Level the skills your play actually uses
Every skill improves through its associated activity. Mining grows while you mine, Running while you move, Melee combat while you fight in melee, and so on. Because the game tracks 12 separate skills, a character can develop a broad toolkit instead of choosing one class tree at creation.

Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Spend talent points at regular milestones
A talent point arrives every five skill levels. Reaching level 100 adds five extra points, so a skill’s late progression has a final burst of customization. Each tree has eight nodes, which means you must choose priorities rather than automatically taking everything at once.

Use cross-skill synergies
Some of the strongest identities come from combining skills. Mage uses Magic directly; Warlock can pair Summoning with Magic because one Summoning talent scales minion damage from the player’s magic-damage increase; Ranger can build around the Range talent that rewards standing still for three seconds. These interactions matter more over time than the +3 skill level selected at character creation.
Reset instead of restarting
Talent allocations can be reset for 200 Ancient Coins. Resetting changes how your earned points are assigned; it does not erase the character’s background, levels or collected equipment. This system makes experimentation practical and removes the need to delete a character because your first build was not ideal.
Best choices for solo play
Most forgiving solo opening: Explorer
Solo players receive no partner to reveal dark areas, draw enemy attention or carry supplies. Explorer’s lantern, food and movement bonus reduce that early friction. The advantage is convenience and escape potential rather than higher permanent damage.
Safest damage plan: Ranger
Ranger is a good solo fit when you can maintain distance and keep a clear retreat route. The Range tree’s stationary damage talent rewards prepared firing positions, but do not stand still when the room is unsafe.
Most straightforward solo combat: Fighter
Fighter avoids early ammunition and spell-management concerns. The cost is that every engagement happens close to the enemy, so food, armor and movement discipline are essential.
Most flexible solo experimentation: Mage or Warlock
Mage offers direct magic scaling, while Warlock adds minions and a Magic-linked damage interaction. Both can evolve as you learn what equipment and talents you enjoy, but neither removes the need to manage positioning.
A practical first-run plan
- Choose for the first problem, not the final identity. Select Explorer for general comfort, Fighter for immediate melee, Ranger for distance, Mage for spells, Warlock for minions, Demolitionist for blasts, or Miner for resources.
- Use the supplied item package immediately. Equip the Copper Sword, Wood Bow, Simple Staff or Tome of the Dark when appropriate; place the lantern where it improves exploration; and keep the food or tools accessible.
- Build a safe loop. Establish a route between your base, resource areas and combat spaces. Ranged and magic characters need firing room; melee characters need a retreat path; explosive characters need safe blast distance.
- Watch which activities you naturally repeat. The activity you perform most will raise its corresponding skill, revealing whether your actual play matches your starting background.
- Spend talent points on the behavior you use. Do not invest in a talent solely because the background name suggests it. A Ranger who fights at close range may benefit more from another skill, and a Warlock who rarely summons should not feel obligated to stay on the Summoning tree.
- Reconfigure at 200 Ancient Coins if necessary. Reset talents when your equipment, group role or preferred combat distance changes. Changing direction is part of the system, not a failed character.
Common mistakes when choosing a class
- Assuming the background is permanent. It is not. The opening +3 and equipment package do not prevent later skill development.
- Ranking damage without considering logistics. Demolitionist has excellent initial area damage but only ten Crude Bombs and ten Grenades in the starting package. Ranger must account for ammunition, while Fighter has a simpler weapon loop.
- Ignoring positioning. Distance and spell builds are only safe when you preserve space. Melee builds need retreat routes, and explosives need blast awareness.
- Spending every talent point immediately. Because points arrive at five-level intervals and can be reset, it is reasonable to wait until you understand whether a node supports your actual equipment and habits.
- Restarting after a change of mind. Continue leveling another skill or reset talents for 200 Ancient Coins. A new background is mainly a reason to restart for role-play or challenge, not a requirement for a new build.
- Choosing Nomad accidentally. Nomad has no bonus or equipment. That is intentional, but it is a poor first-run choice if you expected a starter weapon or tool.
Final recommendation
Pick Explorer if you want the smoothest first experience and have no strong preference. Pick Fighter, Ranger, Mage or Warlock when you already know whether you want melee, distance, spells or minions. Pick Demolitionist for explosive clearing, Miner for a resource-first opening, one of the support backgrounds for farming, cooking or fishing, and Nomad only for a deliberate challenge.
The decisive build choice happens after character creation: which of the 12 skills you level, which eight-node talent trees you prioritize, and how willing you are to reset those points as your equipment and playstyle evolve.
