There is no single best class or job in Final Fantasy XIV for every player. Choose a party role you enjoy, then pick a job whose combat style suits you. The current combat roster is organized around jobs; “class” remains important as a progression term, but it is not the name for every modern combat option.
Class vs. job: what the terms mean
In the Game Manual, your class is determined by the weapon or tool you equip. Mastering a class can open a path to one or more related jobs, which have their own actions. As Square Enix puts it in the Job Guide, “sufficient mastery of a class will open up the path to one or more related jobs and their respective actions.”

That distinction matters when looking for the best option: the modern roster is normally discussed in terms of jobs, while class describes part of character progression. The guide’s Patch 7.5 roster also includes jobs that are not presented as a class-to-job upgrade, so “best class” is best understood as “which job should I play?”

The Party Play manual groups combat responsibilities into tanks, healers, and DPS. DPS then divides into melee, physical ranged, and magical ranged. Pick the responsibility that sounds satisfying before narrowing down individual jobs.

- Tank: Protect allies and draw enemy attention. Choose this if you like leading enemy engagements and managing incoming pressure.
- Healer: Restore and protect allies. Choose this if you want to watch the party’s condition and support its survival.
- DPS: Focus on offensive actions. Choose this if dealing damage is the responsibility you most want to prioritize.
These are role descriptions, not a difficulty ranking. The official sources describe what roles do, but do not establish which role or job is easiest for a new player.
Choose a combat style within your role
Tanks: four standard jobs
The Patch 7.5 Job Guide lists Paladin, Warrior, Dark Knight, and Gunbreaker as tanks. All share the tank role, so choose among them by the job presentation and actions that appeal to you rather than expecting a universally superior pick.
Rank #2
- Access to all expansion content from Heavensward and Stormblood, unlocking additional jobs, areas, story quests and more ways to explore: flying, swimming and diving
- A flexible class system that allows players to switch freely between a variety of classes and jobs, including new additions red mage and samurai, and reach the new level cap of level 70
- All the hallmarks of the FINAL FANTASY franchise, including an engaging storyline, genre-leading graphics, and HD real time cut scenes.
- Robust gameplay features such as player-managed Free Companies, diverse party finder features to group up with other players with ease, and a variety of fun activities in the Gold Saucer area, all designed to accommodate a dynamic player community.
- Challenging trials, dungeons and raids for groups of up to 24, and exciting player-vs-player (PvP) content for groups of up to 72 players
Healers: four standard jobs
The guide lists White Mage, Scholar, Astrologian, and Sage as healers. Each fills the party’s healing role; the role listing alone does not prove that one is easier or better for every kind of content.

Melee DPS: close-range play and positioning
Melee jobs fight up close and use combos and positioning. The standard melee DPS listed in the Patch 7.5 guide are Monk, Dragoon, Ninja, Samurai, Reaper, and Viper. Consider this group if you want to stay near enemies and enjoy close-range combat.
Rank #3
- A new adventure awaits in Norvrandt
- New jobs, including gun breaker and dancer
- New playable races: Viera and Hrothgar
- Level cap increase from 70 to 80
- New cities to explore: The Crystarium and Eulmore
Physical ranged DPS: distance and ally support
Bard, Machinist, and Dancer are the guide’s physical ranged DPS jobs. This role attacks from a distance and supports allies, making it a fit to consider if you want ranged offense rather than melee positioning.
Magical ranged DPS: casts and burst
Black Mage, Summoner, Red Mage, and Pictomancer are the standard magical ranged DPS jobs in the guide. Magical ranged attacks use casts that restrict movement and excel at burst damage. Consider whether that cast-and-movement trade-off sounds enjoyable before choosing one.
Rank #4
- Customer must have Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn to play Stormblood
- Increased level cap up to level 70
- New Jobs – Red Mage and Samurai
- New Beast Tribe and Primal
- New Alliance Raid
Limited jobs are a separate choice
The Patch 7.5 Job Guide marks Blue Mage and Beastmaster as limited jobs. The Party Play manual notes that restrictions apply to limited-job participation in duties, so they should not be treated as interchangeable with standard jobs for every activity. If broad participation in group content is your priority, start by comparing the standard roles and jobs instead.

A practical way to make your choice
- Choose a responsibility: tanking, healing, or dealing damage.
- If you chose DPS, choose a range: close-range melee, physical ranged, or cast-based magical ranged.
- Check the job’s current guide entry: review its actions and role on the official Job Guide rather than relying on a permanent “best job” ranking.
- Try the job in ordinary play: judge whether its movement, positioning, and responsibilities feel good to you. A job that matches your preferences is a more useful personal recommendation than an unsupported universal tier list.
- Confirm content eligibility: if you are considering Blue Mage or Beastmaster, account for limited-job restrictions before making it your only choice.
Why “best” rankings change
Square Enix’s Job Guide is updated for Patch 7.5 and notes potency adjustments across jobs and roles. That confirms that combat balance can change; it does not establish a complete ranking of damage, beginner difficulty, or performance in a particular activity. A claim that one job is strongest would need current evidence for the specific patch and content being discussed.
Best Value
- Increased level cap from 50 to 60
- Dark Knight: Tank - Wields a two-handed greatsword and the power of darkness to deal damage to their foes
- Astrologian: Healer - Tap the power of the stars to cast potent healing magicks, while drawing energies from constellation-based divining cards to support your party
- Machinist: DPS - Deal damage from afar using a combination of firearms enhanced with various attachments, and mechanical turrets deployed on the battlefield
- Included in this expansion pack is a new race called The Au Ra, a new City-State - Ishgard, new Primals Bismarck and Ravana, and Flying Mounts
Viper and Pictomancer are associated with Dawntrail. Check your platform, region, and edition on Square Enix’s expansion information before assuming what access you have; the expansion context does not change how to compare the role categories themselves.
