Activision says skill or player performance has influenced matchmaking since at least Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007), but describes public Multiplayer matchmaking as a mix of factors—not skill alone. You can choose which playlists to enter and keep your connection stable; you cannot set the skill weighting or guarantee a particular lobby.
What SBMM means in Call of Duty
SBMM, short for skill-based matchmaking, is the community’s shorthand for using player performance when assembling matches. Activision’s April 4, 2024 explanation describes a broader system: it places players on teams and against one another using multiple considerations. The company says it has considered performance since as early as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007).
Activision says performance includes kills, deaths, wins, losses, mode selection, and recent matches. It updates as a player’s gameplay changes and is used to find both teammates and opponents. The company’s stated rationale is to avoid extreme mismatches and help balance teams—not to make skill the sole or overriding matchmaking factor. That is Activision’s description, not an independent audit of current game code or proof that every title and mode works identically.
Which factors Activision says shape public Multiplayer matches
In its 2024 general-Multiplayer explanation, Activision gives this order of importance:

- Connection quality, which the company calls “the most critical and heavily weighted factor.”
- Time to find a match.
- Playlist diversity.
- Recent maps and modes.
- Player performance.
- Input device.
- Platform.
- Voice chat.
The order is useful context, not a set of controls or published numerical weights. Activision does not provide a player-facing setting for changing the performance factor.
The same explanation says play frequency and money spent do not affect general matchmaking. It also says account ownership and bots in general Multiplayer do not change how players are matched, and that matchmaking does not alter hit registration, visibility, aim assist, or damage. These are Activision’s statements in its 2024 explainer; they should not be treated as independently verified guarantees for every future release.

What Activision’s matchmaking tests reported
Activision’s July 26, 2024 summary of North American Modern Warfare III tests compared matchmaking with skill consideration loosened or tightened. The results below are publisher-reported findings; the summary does not establish the study’s sample size, and the results are not independent research or a prediction of what every player will experience.
Loosening skill consideration
- Activision said 80% of players in the study had a significant increase in the likelihood of quitting during a match.
- It said 90% of players in the loosened-skill group did not return at a higher rate than players in the control group.
- Team Deathmatch blowouts increased across skill levels. Activision defined a blowout in this test as a score difference greater than 30.
These findings are Activision’s explanation for why it believes skill helps limit extreme disparities. They do not prove that every player prefers tighter matchmaking.

Tightening skill consideration
In a separate Modern Warfare III test, Activision said quit rates fell for 90% of players. It also reported that low-skill players improved in kills per minute and score per minute, while high-skill players experienced negative impacts. Activision said it did not make that tighter approach the standard matchmaking setting in that game.
What “beating” SBMM can realistically mean
Think of “beating” SBMM as making legitimate choices about how you search, not bypassing the system. Activision’s public explanation identifies connection, time-to-match, and playlist or mode selection as relevant considerations, but offers no reliable trick to force an easy lobby.

- Choose the playlist and mode you actually want. Playlist diversity and recent maps and modes are among the stated factors; selecting a different playlist changes what you are searching for, not a guaranteed skill bracket.
- Keep your connection stable. Connection is the first factor in Activision’s stated ordering. A wired connection, when practical, and avoiding other heavy network use may help with connection quality, but neither guarantees easier opponents.
- Play normally rather than manipulating your record. The official explanation says performance updates with gameplay. It does not establish that reverse boosting, deliberately losing, or leaving matches reliably creates easier lobbies. Leaving matches also does not provide a dependable route to better matchmaking.
- Be cautious about third-party tools and account manipulation. Their effectiveness is not established here. Activision’s security policy describes limited matchmaking as an enforcement state that can apply to accounts under review, with restrictions or penalties—not as a player-selected matchmaking mode.
Activision’s FAQ also addresses claims about engagement-based matchmaking and monetization: it says time played and spending are not factors in general Multiplayer matching. Its statements do not settle how every future game might be implemented.

Do not use a Ranked match to infer how public playlists work. Activision’s Black Ops 6 Ranked Play description identifies connection quality, search time, and relative skill as major search parameters, and says Ranked matching considers Rank and Skill Rating (SR). It begins with a narrow target SR disparity and can expand the acceptable range as search time increases. Ranked may allow longer searches to support competitive integrity.

What is known about Modern Warfare 4
As of October 8, 2026, Call of Duty’s official Modern Warfare 4 page, last updated October 5, lists an October 23, 2026 scheduled release for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. The official material reviewed does not explain the game’s skill-weighting rules or say whether beta matchmaking settings will continue at launch. The 2024 Modern Warfare III findings therefore should not be presented as confirmed Modern Warfare 4 rules.
