It is not the only worthwhile direction, though. Doom 64 offers a different branch of classic console FPS history, Quake marks a shift toward fully 3D environments, and Halo: Combat Evolved is a later step in console shooters.
Which game is most like GoldenEye 007?
Perfect Dark: the closest N64 follow-up
If what you want is familiar N64 movement and shooting, start with Perfect Dark. Nintendo’s UK Nintendo 64 description says its basic feel is “very similar” to GoldenEye 007 and that players used to GoldenEye should find the controls natural. That makes it the clearest match among these recommendations—not a claim that the games have identical missions or combat. Nintendo also notes a new weapon-selection system, which it compares with Turok 2. Nintendo’s Perfect Dark description and manual.
Know the original N64 hardware requirement
For the original N64 release, the Expansion Pak is required for solo missions and for multiplayer with three or four players. One- or two-player deathmatch and Challenge Mode work without it, according to Nintendo’s same UK page. The requirement therefore depends on which modes you want to play; it is not a requirement for every mode.
Why its multiplayer suits GoldenEye fans
Nintendo describes traditional deathmatch for two to four players, with options to choose weapons, arenas, time and frag limits, and character appearance. That is a strong fit if the part of GoldenEye you most want to revisit is local competition and the freedom to set up a match.

What made GoldenEye a distinctive starting point?
GoldenEye’s appeal was not only its first-person shooting. Xbox Wire’s retrospective on the genre highlights split-screen multiplayer, different damage from hits to different body areas, and stealth elements among the game’s contributions to console FPS design. Martin Hollis’s 2012 GDC Vault session listing also describes GoldenEye 007 as influential to console shooters. Those features offer useful ways to choose what to play next: familiar local multiplayer points toward Perfect Dark, while interest in the wider evolution of 3D shooters points toward Quake.
David Doak, a former Rare writer, offered a personal retrospective on the local-play side in a 2019 Nintendo Life interview: “I also think that ‘couch multiplayer’, with everyone bunched up together for a good session of friendly banter and shared fun, is one of the pinnacles of video gaming – GoldenEye was undoubtedly a pioneer and an epitome of that.” This is his view of the experience, rather than a measurable ranking of games.

Which classic FPS should you choose for a different experience?
| Game | Why it belongs on the list | Best fit if you want… | What the sources establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perfect Dark | The closest evidenced follow-up to GoldenEye | Familiar N64 controls and configurable local deathmatch | Nintendo describes similar basic feel, natural controls for GoldenEye veterans, multiplayer options, and mode-specific Expansion Pak requirements. |
| Doom 64 | A console entry in the Doom lineage | A different franchise branch from GoldenEye | Xbox Wire’s Doom history lists it as a 1997 franchise spin-off; the cited source does not establish a detailed comparison of its campaign or multiplayer. |
| Quake | A notable shift in 3D FPS design | Exploring fully 3D polygon environments and vertical maps | Xbox Wire contrasts those design features with earlier approaches. This does not establish how a particular console edition controls or performs. |
| Halo: Combat Evolved | A later console FPS milestone | Moving beyond the 1990s era | Xbox Wire says Halo was revamped as an FPS and became an Xbox launch title. |
Doom 64: follow the Doom lineage
Choose Doom 64 if you want a classic console FPS from a different franchise rather than a close recreation of GoldenEye. Xbox Wire’s history of Doom identifies it as a 1997 spin-off. That history supports its place in the series, but it does not establish that its missions, stealth, or multiplayer match GoldenEye.
Quake: follow the evolution of 3D shooters
Quake is a good historical direction if you are curious about how first-person shooters developed beyond the earlier console formula. Xbox Wire points to its fully 3D polygon environments and vertical maps. Treat that as context about the game’s design, not as a guarantee about the controls, performance, or feel of any specific console version.

Halo: Combat Evolved: move to a later console era
Halo: Combat Evolved is the choice for someone ready to leave the N64 generation behind. Xbox Wire describes it as having been revamped as an FPS and as an Xbox launch title. It broadens the list into a later era rather than offering the same period or style as GoldenEye.
How should you decide what to play next?
- Want the closest control feel: choose Perfect Dark, while checking that your original N64 setup has the Expansion Pak if you plan to play its solo missions or three- and four-player modes.
- Want local multiplayer: Perfect Dark is the best-supported choice here; Nintendo documents two-to-four-player deathmatch with several adjustable match settings.
- Want another classic console branch: try Doom 64, understanding that the cited history establishes its place in the franchise, not a feature-by-feature match with GoldenEye.
- Want a design-history detour: consider Quake for the fully 3D environments and vertical maps described by Xbox Wire.
- Want a later console FPS: move to Halo: Combat Evolved, an Xbox launch title according to Xbox Wire.
Can you play these games on a current console?
The cited sources do not establish current store availability, prices, or compatibility on present-day consoles for these games. The specific Perfect Dark information here describes the N64 release on Nintendo’s UK support page, and account or store terms may differ by country. Check the current listing and platform details for your region before buying; do not assume an original cartridge, digital re-release, or modern-console version is available.

The cited histories and product description support those distinctions, but they do not establish a universal winner or a tested ranking.
