Best Classic Shoot-‘Em-Ups on Nintendo Switch 2 if You Like Stinger

GRADIUS ORIGINS is the best first purchase if you like Stinger and want classic Konami arcade shooting on Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo describes it as a collection of 18 versions spanning seven arcade titles, including Gradius, Gradius II, Gradius III, Salamander and Salamander2. Its Switch release date was August 7, 2025. The collection also documents training and other options that make its historical arcade material easier to approach than a single bare-bones port.

Choose Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection instead when your priority is Konami history rather than the fullest Gradius-family package. Its Nintendo listing highlights Scramble, often discussed as an original inspiration for Gradius, and Salamander, also known as Life Force. Nintendo Switch Online is a different proposition altogether: it is a subscription library, and the cited Nintendo documentation does not establish that a particular current Stinger-like game is included.

Why GRADIUS ORIGINS is the strongest Stinger follow-up

It keeps the choice inside the same early Konami arcade family

If your interest in Stinger is really an interest in early Konami arcade shoot-’em-ups, GRADIUS ORIGINS is the most direct answer because it gathers the Gradius and Salamander lineages in one release. You do not have to decide between a Gradius entry and a Salamander entry at the outset; both families are represented in the same collection.

That distinction matters more than a generic “retro shooter” label. A compilation can contain excellent arcade games and still be a poor fit if it does not preserve the lineage you want to explore. GRADIUS ORIGINS is explicitly positioned by Konami around the earliest games in the GRADIUS series, while Nintendo describes the package as a return for the pioneer of the side-scrolling shoot-’em-up genre. For a Stinger fan seeking continuity of publisher, era and arcade design lineage, that is the clearest match in the supplied Switch 2 choices.

The collection is broad enough to support comparison, not just one replay

Nintendo states that the package contains 18 versions across all seven arcade titles in the series. The word “versions” is important: the headline number is not 18 unrelated games. It indicates multiple versions of the listed arcade titles, so the useful question is whether you want to compare historical variants and revisions as well as play a single canonical release.

The Nintendo listing names Gradius, Gradius II, Gradius III, Salamander and Salamander2. The cited material does not name the remaining two arcade titles, so you should use the current regional product page to confirm the complete title list before purchase if those two entries are decisive to you. That is a better approach than assuming every regional listing presents the same wording.

Training and options features change how approachable the archive is

Nintendo’s listing documents training and options features. Those tools are particularly relevant when moving from a familiar single arcade game to a collection that preserves several versions. Training support can let you study a difficult section without treating every attempt as a complete credit, while options give you a way to configure the experience the collection actually exposes.

The supplied material does not specify every training control, save behavior or individual option. Do not infer that every version has identical tools. Instead, regard the documented features as a reason to choose GRADIUS ORIGINS when you want an archive you can examine gradually, then check the in-game menus for the exact scope of each feature.

What is in GRADIUS ORIGINS?

Named arcade families

Family or title named by Nintendo Why it matters to this decision
Gradius The central series identity and the clearest starting point for a player seeking the collection’s namesake lineage.
Gradius II Provides another numbered entry within the same arcade family for players who want progression rather than a one-game snapshot.
Gradius III Included as part of the collection; this is separate from the individual Arcade Archives release whose Switch 2 compatibility status requires checking.
Salamander Extends the package beyond the numbered Gradius titles into the related Salamander arcade branch.
Salamander2 Adds a further named Salamander entry, giving the collection more than a single representative of that branch.
Two additional arcade titles Nintendo confirms seven total arcade titles, but their names are not stated in the cited material. Confirm them on the current listing if they affect your purchase.

Release and physical-edition details

Nintendo lists August 7, 2025 as the Switch release date. Konami’s launch announcement also says that a physical Nintendo Switch edition was made available through Limited Run Games. That establishes a physical edition, not its current stock, price or delivery status. Availability can change, and the cited material does not establish a Switch 2-specific regional stock position.

If you prefer cartridges, verify three separate facts rather than treating “physical edition” as a guarantee of immediate access: whether the edition is currently in stock, whether it is sold for your region, and whether the package’s compatibility information matches your Switch 2 setup. If you prefer digital access, check the live regional eShop listing because the supplied evidence does not establish current regional availability or pricing.

When Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection is the better choice

It starts with the history behind Gradius

Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection is the more interesting alternative when you want to understand the genre’s roots rather than concentrate on the Gradius family alone. Nintendo’s listing identifies Scramble as a game that could be considered the original inspiration for Gradius. That makes it a useful historical stop: you can examine the earlier design lineage that led toward the series you already know.

The same Nintendo listing includes Salamander, also known as Life Force. If your attraction to Stinger is the feel of classic Konami arcade shooting and you want a sampler that places an earlier influence beside a related shooter, this package has a clear rationale.

Its strengths are context and selection, not the same promise as GRADIUS ORIGINS

The two collections answer different questions. GRADIUS ORIGINS asks, “How much of the early Gradius and Salamander arcade lineage can I explore in one dedicated package?” Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection asks, “Which older Konami arcade landmarks help explain that lineage?” Neither question makes the other collection redundant.

Do not use the presence of Salamander in both descriptions as proof that the packages contain identical versions or identical preservation features. The cited material confirms the title’s presence and the alternate name Life Force in Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection, but it does not establish version parity, training support or menu features between the two products.

Nintendo Switch Online: a separate access model

What Nintendo confirms for Switch 2

Nintendo Support confirms that Switch 2 members can access classic-game libraries covering NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy and Nintendo GameCube. This is a subscription access model rather than a dedicated purchase of GRADIUS ORIGINS or Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it is not a confirmed Stinger replacement

The cited support page does not establish a specific current Stinger-like title. That means you should not subscribe on the assumption that the exact game or arcade lineage you want is included. Check the live catalogue associated with your membership tier and region before treating Nintendo Switch Online as your solution.

The subscription route makes sense when you already value several of those libraries and want broad access. A dedicated collection makes more sense when your priority is a known set of Gradius and Salamander arcade versions. The distinction is about certainty: the collection’s contents are identified in its product description, while the support page establishes the available library families but not the particular title you are seeking.

Be careful with the individual Arcade Archives GRADIUS III release

Nintendo’s cited Switch 2 compatibility document lists Arcade Archives GRADIUS III with a startup issue under investigation. That is not a blanket statement that every Gradius III release is unusable, nor does it establish when the issue will be resolved. It is a reason to verify the current status before buying that individual release specifically for Switch 2.

This caution is separate from the inclusion of Gradius III in GRADIUS ORIGINS. Do not automatically transfer the compatibility note from one product to the other. Check the exact product name, publisher listing and current compatibility information for the edition you intend to use.

Choose by the experience you actually want

Choose GRADIUS ORIGINS when lineage is the priority

  • You want the strongest direct connection to the early Gradius and Salamander arcade families.
  • You want multiple documented versions and seven arcade titles in one dedicated package.
  • You value training and options features as part of a longer-term archive rather than a one-evening sampler.
  • You want a physical edition to investigate, subject to current regional stock and availability.

Choose Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection when history comes first

  • You specifically want Scramble as a historical precursor or inspiration point.
  • You want Salamander/Life Force in a broader Konami arcade context.
  • You are more interested in sampling the company’s arcade lineage than in collecting the fullest Gradius-centered package documented here.

Use Nintendo Switch Online when you already want the subscription library

  • You already maintain a membership for several classic systems.
  • You are comfortable checking the current catalogue instead of buying a confirmed dedicated collection.
  • You want access to multiple Nintendo-era libraries beyond this one shooter lineage.

Delay an Arcade Archives GRADIUS III purchase until compatibility is clear

  • You want only that individual release rather than the broader GRADIUS ORIGINS package.
  • You can confirm that Nintendo’s listed startup issue has been resolved or otherwise accept the current status.

A practical buying checklist for Switch 2 owners

  1. Define your target. Write down whether the priority is Gradius-family breadth, historical context through Scramble, a subscription catalogue or one individual game. This prevents the word “classic” from hiding four different purchasing decisions.
  2. Open the current regional product listing. Confirm the complete seven-title list for GRADIUS ORIGINS, because the cited Nintendo material names five titles but not the other two.
  3. Check edition and availability. For a physical copy, verify current stock, region and the exact Nintendo Switch edition. For digital purchase, verify that the listing is available in your eShop region and shows the edition you intend to use.
  4. Separate confirmed facts from assumptions. The documented collection size, named games, training/options features and release date are established. Current price, current stock and regional storefront availability are not established by the cited material and must be checked live.
  5. Check compatibility for individual releases. If you are considering Arcade Archives GRADIUS III rather than the collection, look for the latest status of the startup issue listed in Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility documentation.
  6. Plan your first session around comparison. Start with the earliest named Gradius entry, then try a Salamander entry and use the available training or options menus. The goal is to identify which branch of the lineage you actually want to revisit before spending on a second product.

How to use the collections without duplicating purchases

Start with the package whose defining feature you would miss most. If that is the concentration of Gradius and Salamander material, begin with GRADIUS ORIGINS. If it is seeing Scramble alongside Salamander/Life Force, begin with Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection. If you already have Nintendo Switch Online for other systems, inspect its current catalogue before buying anything solely because it is labeled “classic.”

After that first purchase, compare only the gaps that matter. A second collection is justified when it adds a named historical game or a distinct access model you actually want, not merely because both descriptions contain the word “arcade.” The supplied evidence does not establish that the two collections share identical versions, features or emulation options, so use the live product descriptions to identify any genuine addition.

Bottom line for a Stinger fan

Buy GRADIUS ORIGINS first. It is the only option here explicitly built around the early Gradius and Salamander arcade lineage, and Nintendo documents a substantial package of versions, titles, training and options. Pick Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection when the historical bridge through Scramble is more important than a dedicated Gradius-family archive. Treat Nintendo Switch Online as a broader subscription library, not a confirmed Stinger substitute, and verify the unresolved Switch 2 startup issue before choosing the individual Arcade Archives GRADIUS III release.
