God of War: Sons of Sparta is a canon prequel about young Kratos and his brother Deimos during their Agoge training. It trades the series’ usual 3D action for a 2D action-platformer format, and its main campaign is single-player. Two-player local co-op is available only in the post-campaign challenge mode, The Pit.
What is God of War: Sons of Sparta?
God of War: Sons of Sparta is a 2D action-platformer for PlayStation 5. PlayStation describes it as a canon story set during Kratos’ youth, when he and his brother Deimos are undergoing the brutal Agoge training of Sparta. The brothers travel through Laconia, including areas beyond Sparta.

The game is a shift in presentation and genre from the series’ familiar 3D action adventures: PlayStation’s overview describes high-definition pixel-art environments and platforming alongside combat and exploration. The story was developed with Santa Monica Studio; Mega Cat Studios is the development partner. Antony Del Rio voices young Kratos, Scott Menville voices young Deimos, and TC Carson returns as adult Kratos and narrator. Bear McCreary composed the soundtrack.
PlayStation says the writing team includes writers from God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök. Grace Orlady, Communications Director at Santa Monica Studio, described it as “a canon story that takes place in Kratos’ youth from the writing team that brought you God of War (2018), God of War Ragnarök, and God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla.” (PlayStation.Blog, February 13, 2026)

When did God of War: Sons of Sparta come out?
Sons of Sparta launched digitally for PS5 in February 2026. PlayStation’s dedicated announcement and US support FAQ give the date as February 12, 2026. However, the FAQ embedded on the US game page lists February 13, 2026. The official pages therefore differ by one day; February 12 is the date supported by the announcement and support FAQ.
PlayStation’s announcement says both editions are available digitally through the PlayStation Store. The official pages cited here do not establish a physical disc release.

Is God of War: Sons of Sparta co-op?
The main story campaign is single-player. After completing it, players unlock The Pit, an end-game roguelite challenge mode that can be played solo or with a second player in local, offline couch co-op. It is not a co-op campaign or online multiplayer mode, according to PlayStation’s FAQ (US support FAQ).
What does gameplay involve?
PlayStation describes combat built around a spear and shield, each with attachments and upgrade paths. Three skill trees cover offensive, defensive and movement abilities. Kratos can also use Gifts of Olympus: divine artifacts with special and super attacks, including ranged projectiles and melee combos. These are publisher descriptions, not an independent assessment of how the systems feel in play.

Exploration takes place in pixel-art locations across Laconia. The official overview lists optional quests, hidden encounters and loot among the activities players can find as they explore (PlayStation.Blog overview).

Both editions are digital PS5 releases. The Standard Edition includes the full game; Digital Deluxe adds in-game items and digital extras. The US PlayStation Store listed the prices below when checked on October 4, 2026. Store prices can change and differ by region.

The Deluxe extras are digital; the edition description does not indicate a physical artbook or soundtrack.
