What’s actually slowing this PC down?

GeForce NOW Ultimate is the best cloud gaming service for streaming performance, while Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is the better value if you want a large catalog of games included. PlayStation Plus Premium is the natural choice for PlayStation users, Boosteroid is worth considering for compatible PC games you already own, and Shadow PC is better understood as a rented Windows computer than a game subscription.
These services are not interchangeable. Some stream games you already own, some include a rotating catalog, and one gives you a complete cloud PC. Your best choice depends on your location, device, internet stability, game library, and tolerance for queues or catalog changes.

Quick comparison
Prices below are US prices or pricing signals recorded on August 18, 2026. Prices, promotions, taxes, availability, and plan terms can change, particularly outside the United States.
| Service | Best for | US monthly price | Games included? | Advertised maximum | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA GeForce NOW | Image quality and high frame rates | From $9.99 | Usually no; you connect supported stores | Up to 5K/360 FPS on Ultimate | You generally still need to own or access the game |
| Xbox Game Pass Ultimate | Included games and multi-device access | $22.99 | Yes, through the Game Pass catalog | Highest streaming quality offered by the plan | Catalog rotation and Xbox licensing rules |
| PlayStation Plus Premium | PlayStation games, classics, and trials | Check current checkout price | Yes, for eligible catalog titles | Up to 1080p streaming under Sony’s stated guidance | Territory and title availability restrictions |
| Boosteroid | Streaming compatible PC games you own | Verify current regional price | Primarily no | Varies by plan, game, device, and region | Server proximity and game support matter greatly |
| Shadow PC | A full remote Windows PC | Verify current regional price | No conventional catalog | Depends on the selected cloud-PC hardware | More setup and management than game streaming |
The headline figures are not directly comparable. GeForce NOW’s advertised 4,500-plus PC games largely represent compatible access through connected storefronts, whereas Game Pass’s advertised 500-plus games describe a subscription catalog. A larger number does not automatically mean better value.

What cloud gaming actually means
Cloud gaming runs the game on a remote data-center computer and sends an interactive video stream to your device. Your controller, keyboard, or mouse sends input back to that computer. You do not need a powerful local GPU, but you do need a compatible app or browser, a controller or input device, and a stable connection to the service.
There are three different business models
- Included-game streaming: A subscription gives you access to a catalog, such as Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or eligible PlayStation Plus Premium titles. The catalog can change and not every game in the wider platform ecosystem is necessarily streamable.
- Bring-your-own-game streaming: The provider supplies the remote hardware, but you normally need ownership or subscription access through Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Ubisoft Connect, PC Game Pass, or another supported account. GeForce NOW is the clearest example.
- Cloud PCs: You rent a remote Windows computer, install software, and manage games much as you would on a local PC. Shadow PC offers this type of flexibility, but it does not function like a Netflix-style game catalog.
Best overall performance: GeForce NOW Ultimate
GeForce NOW Ultimate is the strongest candidate for players who prioritize visual quality, high refresh rates, and a PC-like streaming experience. NVIDIA positions the tier around RTX 50-series performance and advertises up to 5K/120 and up to 360 FPS features, depending on the game, device, display, region, and stream mode. Those are ceilings, not guarantees that every game will run or stream at those settings.
NVIDIA’s US marketplace showed the following pricing snapshot on August 18, 2026:
Recommended Free Tools
- Performance: $9.99 per month or $99.99 annually; up to 1440p/60 in the advertised configuration.
- Ultimate: $19.99 per month or $199.99 annually; up to 5K/360 FPS in the advertised configuration.
- Day passes: $3.99 for Performance and $7.99 for Ultimate.
- Free: Ad-supported access with up to 1080p/60 shown in the marketplace listing.
See NVIDIA’s current marketplace before subscribing because plan names, prices, and availability are volatile.
How game ownership works
GeForce NOW connects to supported accounts including Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, PC Game Pass, and Ubisoft Connect. You select a supported title, link the relevant store account, and verify that you own or otherwise have access to it. “Supported on GeForce NOW” does not mean “included with your membership.” NVIDIA explains the account-linking and ownership process in its setup guide.
The service advertises more than 4,500 PC games overall, but check your exact titles. Publisher participation, regional licensing, launchers, anti-cheat systems, DLC, mods, and cross-save support can all affect whether a game works as expected.
Choose GeForce NOW if: you already own a compatible PC library, want the highest available stream-quality ceiling, or need a low-commitment test through a day pass.

Best value with games included: Xbox Game Pass Ultimate
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is the clearest choice for someone starting from little or no PC game library and wanting an included catalog. The current US Xbox store page lists $22.99 per month, 500-plus games, unlimited cloud gaming, priority access, and the highest streaming quality offered by the plan. Prices and benefits vary by country.
Cloud Gaming is available across supported Windows devices, Apple and Android mobile devices, Xbox consoles, selected LG, Samsung, and VIDAA televisions, Amazon Fire TV devices, and selected Meta Quest headsets. The exact experience depends on the country, device model, app, browser, controller, and title; consult the official cloud-gaming page.
Game Pass is not a permanent ownership library. Titles can rotate, licensing can differ by region, and cloud eligibility may not match every game available for local download. Microsoft also announced in April 2026 that future Call of Duty releases would not launch into Game Pass Ultimate, instead arriving around the following holiday season; existing Call of Duty titles remain available under the stated policy. Read Microsoft’s policy announcement for the current qualification.

Choose Xbox Game Pass Ultimate if: you want a broad included catalog, play across several device types, and value convenience over maximum PC graphics settings.
Skip it if: your main library is on Steam or Epic and you want to stream those purchases rather than browse Microsoft’s catalog.
Best for PlayStation users: PlayStation Plus Premium
PlayStation Plus Premium is the best fit for households invested in PlayStation’s catalog. Premium includes cloud streaming, Game Catalog access, Classics Catalog games, trials, monthly games, online multiplayer, cloud storage, and discounts. Sony says PS4 games are added only intermittently from January 2026, so do not assume a constant flow of PS4 additions.
Sony’s US guidance says cloud streaming requires at least 5 Mbps to establish a session and 15 Mbps for 1080p. Its PlayStation Portal guidance gives different figures for some resolutions, including 7 Mbps for 720p and 13 Mbps for 1080p. Treat these as minimums, not promises of stable play. The current Premium price should be checked in the US checkout flow because the available research does not establish a reliable current figure.
Cloud streaming on PlayStation Portal requires an active Premium subscription, a PlayStation account, a supported territory, and compatible broadband. Sony’s Portal support page lists current requirements and supported countries.

Best alternatives for owned PC games
Boosteroid
Boosteroid is a PC-style, bring-your-own-game service. It can be appealing when your titles are supported and its nearest server gives you a stable route, but suitability is highly regional. Verify the current plan, supported games, data-center location, device support, and launcher requirements directly on Boosteroid’s site before paying.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not treat Boosteroid as an included catalog unless the specific plan explicitly says so. The decisive question is whether your exact games work reliably from your location—not the provider’s overall title count.
GeForce NOW versus Boosteroid
GeForce NOW has clearer published US tier and performance information in the sources for this comparison, while Boosteroid may be attractive as an alternative route for particular PC games. Neither can be declared universally faster without testing the same game, connection, location, and device under controlled conditions.
Best cloud PC: Shadow PC
Shadow PC is a remote Windows computer rather than a conventional game-streaming subscription. You supply and install your games and software, then manage the virtual machine yourself. That makes Shadow more flexible for software that managed streaming platforms do not support, but it also introduces installation, storage, launcher, update, and compatibility work.
A cloud PC may be the better choice if you need a general-purpose Windows environment for more than gaming. It is a poor fit if your goal is instant access to a curated included catalog. Verify the current plan price, hardware configuration, storage, availability, and software restrictions at Shadow’s official site.
Is Amazon Luna still worth considering in 2026?
Older Luna comparisons are unsafe to use without checking their date. A report published by PC Gamer describes major 2026 changes, including the end of game purchases, third-party subscription channels, and the Bring Your Own Library model, with access to certain previously purchased third-party games ending in June 2026. Read the reported changes, then verify Amazon’s current signup and support terms at Luna.

Luna should not receive a positive recommendation based on its former channels, purchase model, or BYOL assumptions. Its value must be judged under the post-change model that applies when you subscribe.
How to compare latency properly
Latency is not just the ping shown in a speed-test app. The complete chain includes:
- Controller, mouse, or keyboard input.
- Processing on the local device.
- Wi-Fi or Ethernet transmission.
- ISP routing and the distance to the provider’s data center.
- Server-side game processing.
- Video encoding.
- Return-stream transmission, decoding, and display response.
Network latency is commonly reported in milliseconds. Stream latency also includes encoding, decoding, transmission, and display time. Jitter is variation in latency, while packet loss causes missing data and visible stutter. A slightly higher but consistent connection can feel better than a lower-ping connection with frequent spikes.
NVIDIA specifies less than 80 ms network latency to an NVIDIA data center. That is an eligibility guideline, not a complete controller-to-photon input-lag measurement. Do not interpret a provider’s network threshold or marketing number as proof that it has the lowest real-world input delay.
A practical home test
- Test the service at the time and location where you normally play.
- Use the native app when available, then compare the browser if that is your preferred device.
- Play the exact games you care about, including a fast shooter or racing game if responsiveness matters.
- Record ping, visible jitter, packet loss, queue time, resolution changes, and disconnects—not just download speed.
- Repeat over several sessions, including a busy evening.
- Try Ethernet, then strong 5 GHz or 6 GHz Wi-Fi. Avoid drawing conclusions from one speed test.
Internet requirements and connection advice
Requirements differ by provider, resolution, and frame rate. NVIDIA lists at least 45 Mbps for certain 4K/120 configurations and 35 Mbps for several 1440p/120 or 1080p/240 configurations, alongside its under-80-ms data-center latency guideline. Sony lists 5 Mbps to start cloud streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p on its main US guidance.
These are service requirements, not a guarantee. For smoother play:
- Use Ethernet where possible.
- Otherwise prefer a strong 5 GHz or 6 GHz Wi-Fi connection over congested 2.4 GHz.
- Pause large downloads, uploads, cloud backups, and high-bitrate video on the same network.
- Disable a VPN while testing; it can create a longer or less stable route.
- Test mobile 5G cautiously: throughput may be excellent while jitter changes when the phone moves between towers or the cell becomes congested.
- Check broadband and mobile data caps. Cloud gaming can consume substantial data.
- If stutter persists, lower stream resolution or frame rate before assuming the client device is at fault.
Resolution and frame rate: what the numbers do—and do not—mean
Separate the game’s render resolution, the encoded stream resolution, your display’s resolution, and the plan’s technical ceiling. A service may advertise 5K/360 FPS while your particular game, browser, television app, device, display, region, or network supports less.
Higher frame rates can make input feel more immediate, but they cannot remove network delay. HDR, codec support, image quality, and resolution can also vary between native apps, browsers, televisions, handhelds, and mobile devices. “Supports 4K” or “supports 120 FPS” should therefore be read as a conditional maximum, not a normal result on every endpoint.

Queues, session limits, and interruptions
Free tiers commonly involve queues, and paid tiers usually provide priority access rather than an absolute guarantee of instant capacity. Session length, reconnect behavior, idle disconnects, daily or monthly limits, and fair-use policies differ by service and can change. Check current terms before treating a low monthly price as unlimited uninterrupted play.
NVIDIA describes premium memberships as offering less waiting, priority access, and longer or uninterrupted sessions. Xbox advertises unlimited cloud gaming with Ultimate, but “unlimited” still depends on supported titles, service availability, account terms, and capacity. A service can be excellent technically and still be poor value if you regularly wait to start or are disconnected during long sessions.
Game compatibility matters more than title counts
Before subscribing, check:
- Your exact game and edition.
- The required store account and whether you own the title.
- Anti-cheat and multiplayer compatibility.
- Publisher opt-in or opt-out status.
- DLC, mods, custom launchers, and overlays.
- Cross-save support between your local and cloud sessions.
- Regional licensing and whether the title is available where you live.
- Day-one availability and catalog rotation.
GeForce NOW’s 4,500-plus figure and Xbox’s 500-plus figure describe different products. One primarily aggregates compatible PC-store access; the other presents a curated subscription catalog. Neither figure answers whether the service has the five games you actually play.

The meaningful calculation is:
Subscription + required game purchases + optional storage + controller or client-device cost + possible data charges.
Example 1: You already own PC games
If your Steam or Epic library is compatible, GeForce NOW Performance at the August 2026 US snapshot of $9.99 per month may be enough. Ultimate at $19.99 is aimed at users who value higher resolution and frame-rate ceilings. The games are not included merely because you subscribe, so your existing purchases remain part of the total cost.
Example 2: You are starting from zero
Game Pass Ultimate’s US price of $22.99 per month includes access to its advertised 500-plus-game catalog, making the cost easier to understand than a BYOG service plus separate purchases. You still need to check whether your preferred titles are included and whether they can be streamed in your region.
Example 3: You are a PlayStation household
Premium combines PlayStation’s eligible cloud catalog with classics, trials, monthly games, online multiplayer, and other benefits. Add the cost of any required compatible device or controller, and verify the current regional Premium price before subscribing.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Competitive games versus slower genres
Cloud gaming can work very well for turn-based games, strategy, RPGs, adventure games, and many single-player experiences. Competitive shooters, fighting games, rhythm games, and racing games expose latency and jitter more quickly.
A wired controller, mouse, or keyboard can reduce local wireless delay, but it cannot fix a distant data center, packet loss, or poor ISP routing. High-refresh streaming only helps when the service, game, connection, display, and client device can sustain it. Without reproducible testing, no provider should be called universally suitable for esports play.
How to fix common cloud-gaming problems
- Check the provider’s status page to rule out an outage or capacity problem.
- Run the service’s network test and note latency, jitter, and packet loss.
- Switch to Ethernet, or move to a strong 5 GHz/6 GHz Wi-Fi connection.
- Stop background traffic, including downloads, uploads, and cloud backups.
- Disable the VPN and test again.
- Select a nearer region if the service permits manual region selection.
- Lower resolution or frame rate if the stream stutters or constantly drops quality.
- Try the native app or another browser, keeping the device and connection constant when comparing.
- Check the controller: update firmware, re-pair Bluetooth, or test a USB connection.
- Confirm account linking and ownership, particularly on GeForce NOW.
- Check game support for delisting, publisher changes, anti-cheat failures, launcher issues, or regional restrictions.
On GeForce NOW, NVIDIA’s documented flow is to choose a membership, open the app or browser, connect supported game-store accounts, verify ownership, and launch a supported title. Install-to-Play games may require a session download and optional persistent storage. Steam Cloud-supported games can retain progress, but save behavior ultimately depends on the store and game.
Final verdict
| Need | Best match | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Best image quality and performance ceiling | GeForce NOW Ultimate | Highest advertised resolution and frame-rate options, subject to local conditions |
| Best included catalog | Xbox Game Pass Ultimate | 500-plus advertised games and unlimited cloud gaming on supported devices |
| Best for PlayStation users | PlayStation Plus Premium | PlayStation catalog, classics, trials, and Portal streaming |
| Best for an existing PC library | GeForce NOW or Boosteroid | BYOG model; choose based on exact game support and nearest server |
| Best full cloud computer | Shadow PC | General-purpose Windows flexibility rather than an included game catalog |
| Best low-commitment test | GeForce NOW day pass | Daily Performance and Ultimate options were listed by NVIDIA in August 2026 |
For most readers, the decision is simple: choose GeForce NOW if you already own compatible PC games and care most about stream quality; choose Xbox Game Pass Ultimate if included games matter more than maximum PC settings; choose PlayStation Plus Premium if your library and devices are centered on PlayStation. Test the service from your normal location before committing, because distance, routing, jitter, and title availability can outweigh every advertised specification.
