The Ascent is the best starting point for most groups: its Steam listing describes a complete cyberpunk action-shooter RPG playable alone or with up to three friends in online or shared/split-screen co-op. If your group prefers coordinated planning, choose Satellite Reign; for same-room runs, choose Neon Chrome; and for an eccentric, demanding PC shooter-RPG, try E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy. This guide compares how each game handles networking, group size, genre, session structure and learning curve, then explains the important 2025 change to Satellite Reign and why Cyberpunk 2077 is not an official co-op option.
Quick comparison
| Game | Release | Players and network | Format | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Ascent | 29 July 2021 | Solo or up to three friends; online and shared/split-screen co-op | Isometric action-shooter RPG with loot and cyberware | Groups wanting a straightforward campaign and flexible online or couch play |
| Satellite Reign | 28 August 2015 | Up to four players; local LAN, with online play requiring LAN over a VPN since UNET shut down in 2025 | Real-time, class-based strategy in an open cyberpunk city | Players who enjoy planning, role assignment, stealth, hacking and sabotage |
| Neon Chrome | 28 April 2016 | Two to four players on shared-screen local co-op | Procedural top-down twin-stick shooter roguelite | Same-room groups seeking short, repeatable runs and destructible environments |
| E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy | 29 July 2011 | One player plus up to three friends; online, LAN and shared/split-screen features listed on Steam | Dark cyberpunk FPS/RPG with hacking, stealth and character builds | Experienced PC players who like unusual, systems-heavy immersive-sim design |
The table separates a crucial distinction: “co-op” does not mean the same thing in every cyberpunk game. Two titles are designed around a continuing campaign, one is built around repeatable procedural attempts, and one treats multiplayer as a way to experiment inside a deliberately strange FPS/RPG. Your group’s hardware, room layout and tolerance for setup matter as much as the setting.

How to choose the right cyberpunk co-op game
Start with where everyone will play
For friends in different homes, begin with The Ascent because its listed online mode requires no workaround described in the supplied information. Satellite Reign needs more planning: its developer’s Steam page says the UNET service was shut down in 2025, so its remaining co-op path is a local network. To play across the internet, players must make that LAN connection travel through a VPN. Neon Chrome is explicitly a shared-screen local game, making it a natural choice for one television or monitor rather than a remote group. E.Y.E lists online, LAN and shared/split-screen features, so it offers the broadest range of connection types, but its older PC design is less of a plug-and-play proposition.
Match the number of people to the game’s design
A group of four has two clear candidates: Satellite Reign is designed for four agents, while Neon Chrome’s local format also reaches four players. The Ascent and E.Y.E are better when your party is smaller than that ceiling. Do not treat a higher player limit as automatically better; an additional person changes whether the game feels like a coordinated squad, a crowded shared screen or a division of specialized jobs.

Decide between campaign continuity and repeatable runs
The Ascent and Satellite Reign are the campaign-oriented choices. They reward a group that can return to the same save and develop a shared approach over multiple sessions. Neon Chrome instead uses procedural environments and persistent upgrades, so each attempt is a self-contained push toward the next improvement. E.Y.E sits between conventional campaign expectations and experimental systems: its hacking, stealth and build choices invite replay and discovery, but its dark, unusual presentation asks more patience from newcomers.
Choose your preferred pace
Action-shooter players should look first at The Ascent, where aiming, movement, loot and cyberware define the moment-to-moment loop. Neon Chrome delivers a faster arcade-like rhythm through twin-stick shooting, destructible spaces and run resets. Satellite Reign slows the action down into real-time tactical decisions: the pleasure comes from assigning agents, arranging a plan and adapting when stealth or sabotage turns into combat. E.Y.E is the most demanding option for groups that enjoy an FPS/RPG with hacking, stealth and open-ended character builds rather than a guided, conventional shooter.
Be honest about your group’s tolerance for setup
The easiest recommendation is not always the most mechanically interesting one. Shared-screen games require everyone to be in the same place and to agree on one display. Satellite Reign requires a LAN, and internet play adds VPN configuration. E.Y.E’s 2011 release and deliberately strange design can involve more explanation before the group understands what it expects from them. If your friends want to start shooting quickly, use The Ascent; if they enjoy solving technical and tactical problems together, the extra preparation can be part of Satellite Reign’s appeal.

What it is
Developed by Neon Giant and published by KRAFTON, The Ascent launched on 29 July 2021. It is an isometric, top-down action-shooter RPG set on Veles, a densely packed cyberpunk world. Character cyberware and loot give the group ongoing build decisions without changing the basic appeal: move through a hostile city, fight together and improve the characters between encounters.

The official Steam description makes the campaign promise unusually clear: “Play the entire game alone or work together with up to three friends in local or online co-op.” That wording matters because it presents co-op as a way to experience the complete game, not as a separate multiplayer mode with a reduced selection of content.
Why it works for mixed-experience groups
The isometric viewpoint keeps the shared battlefield readable while players learn the game. Shooting is immediately legible, and the RPG layer gives more committed players something to tune through cyberware and loot. A group can therefore approach the same campaign at different levels of enthusiasm: one friend can focus on the action while another spends more attention on character development.
Its support for both online and shared/split-screen play also lets the same recommendation cover two very different nights. A remote group can meet online, while people in one room can use the couch-friendly option. That flexibility is the main reason it earns the overall pick rather than merely the “best action game” label.

Satellite Reign: best for coordinated cyberpunk strategy
What it is
Satellite Reign, developed and published by 5 Lives Studios, released on 28 August 2015. It is a real-time, class-based strategy game set in an open cyberpunk city. Each participant controls an agent, and the entire game supports co-op rather than reserving multiplayer for selected missions. The official Steam listing summarizes the design this way: “Play the entirety of Satellite Reign with your friends in co-op multiplayer. Up to four players can each control their own agent.”

How the teamwork feels
This is the choice for groups that enjoy discussing an approach before acting. Stealth, hacking, sabotage and combat are not separate mini-games; they are tools in a sequence of plans. One player may concentrate on getting an agent into position, another may prepare a hack, and the group can decide when a quiet operation should become a direct fight. The class-based structure gives each agent a distinct job, so communication has a practical purpose beyond calling out targets.
Because the city is open, the group’s mistakes can become part of the story of a session. A failed infiltration may force a change of route or a new division of responsibilities. That emergent quality is more important here than reflex speed, and it rewards a party willing to pause, explain its intentions and let another player’s plan work.
The 2025 networking change
Satellite Reign’s Steam page states that its UNET networking service was shut down in 2025. Co-op now works through a local LAN; friends who are not physically together need a VPN that presents their computers as one LAN. This is a material limitation, not a minor menu detail. Before buying or scheduling a session, make sure every participant is comfortable installing and configuring the same VPN approach and confirming that the game can see the virtual local network.
Who should choose it
- Four-player groups that want every person to control an agent.
- Friends who prefer planning, role assignment and adapting a shared operation.
- Players with access to a physical LAN or the patience to arrange LAN-over-VPN play.
- Strategy fans who value stealth and hacking as much as direct combat.
Neon Chrome: best couch co-op roguelite
What it is
Neon Chrome, from 10tons Ltd., released on 28 April 2016. It is a procedural top-down twin-stick shooter built around shared-screen local co-op. Its levels are destructible, its characters use cybernetic abilities, and persistent upgrades carry progress from one run to the next. The official Steam listing invites friends to help bring down the Overseer and specifies support for two to four players on one shared screen.

Why the run-based structure matters
Neon Chrome is the strongest choice when your group has an hour rather than a reliable weekly campaign appointment. Procedural layouts mean a new attempt changes the route and the immediate tactical problem. A failed run does not erase every improvement because persistent upgrades provide a longer arc across attempts. That combination gives a local group a reason to try again without requiring everyone to remember a complex narrative state.
Destructible environments also change how players read a room. The top-down perspective makes the geometry visible, while the ability to alter it means the safest route is not always the obvious one. Cybernetic abilities add another layer to the shooter loop, but the game remains centered on movement, aiming and surviving the current run.
Who should choose it
- People sitting together around one display.
- Groups that want repeatable sessions instead of a single continuous campaign.
- Players who enjoy learning through failed attempts and carrying upgrades forward.
- Friends who want four-person local play without setting up a remote network.
E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy: best unusual FPS/RPG
What it is
E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy, developed by Streum On Studio, released on 29 July 2011. Steam describes it as a dark cyberpunk game in which the player and up to three friends wage war against the all-powerful Federation in a Source-powered FPS/RPG. The listing includes online co-op, LAN co-op and shared/split-screen features.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat makes it different
E.Y.E combines first-person shooting with hacking, stealth and character builds, then places those systems inside a surreal world. The result is less immediately conventional than The Ascent or Neon Chrome. Players who enjoy experimentation can test different approaches and develop unusual builds; players expecting a tightly signposted modern shooter may find the design demanding before it becomes rewarding.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The FPS perspective changes co-op communication. Teammates cannot see the whole encounter from a single shared overhead view, so calling out discoveries and coordinating movement becomes more important. Hacking and stealth also create reasons to approach an area indirectly instead of treating every problem as a firefight. That makes it a strong fit for experienced PC groups that want to investigate systems rather than simply clear rooms.
Who should choose it
- Players comfortable with an older PC game and a deliberately strange presentation.
- Groups that want hacking, stealth and build experimentation alongside shooting.
- Friends who may need online, LAN or shared/split-screen options depending on where they play.
- Fans of demanding, immersive-sim-style problem solving rather than a purely linear action campaign.
Practical setup checklist
For online sessions
- Confirm which game your group is using and whether its listed mode matches your situation: online, LAN, shared screen or a combination.
- Agree on the intended group size before launching. A game’s maximum is not a requirement; smaller parties can change how much responsibility each player carries.
- Use the same game edition and keep everyone on the same platform environment where the listing supports that mode.
- Start with a short session to verify that every participant can join, see the correct character or agent and remain connected before committing to a long campaign.
For Satellite Reign across the internet
- Plan for LAN-over-VPN rather than a native online service; UNET was shut down in 2025 according to the Steam page.
- Have every participant join the same VPN network before starting the game.
- Check that the host can see the other computers on the virtual LAN, then launch the LAN co-op session.
- If discovery fails, verify the VPN connection and local firewall permissions before changing in-game settings. The game cannot use the discontinued UNET service as a fallback.
For shared-screen play
- Choose a display large enough for the group and decide who handles menus or character setup when the game requires a single input focus.
- Connect and test each controller before loading the campaign or starting a run.
- For Neon Chrome, treat each attempt as a complete session; for The Ascent or E.Y.E, agree on whose saved progress the group is advancing.
Does Cyberpunk 2077 have co-op?
Not in the official release covered here. Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, released on 25 September 2023, is labeled “Single-player” on its Steam listing, and the expansion requires the base game. It should not be counted as a co-op recommendation simply because it shares the cyberpunk genre or because players recognize its setting. If your priority is playing with friends, choose one of the four games above whose listings explicitly describe co-op support.
Final recommendation by group type
- Most groups: choose The Ascent for the clearest campaign, online flexibility and couch option.
- Four strategists: choose Satellite Reign, provided the LAN or LAN-over-VPN setup is acceptable.
- One-room game night: choose Neon Chrome for shared-screen runs and persistent progression.
- Experienced PC experimenters: choose E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy for its dark FPS/RPG systems, hacking and stealth.
These recommendations are deliberately different rather than interchangeable. The Ascent is the safest all-purpose answer, Satellite Reign is about coordinated operations, Neon Chrome is about repeatable local runs, and E.Y.E is about exploring an unusual ruleset with friends. Pick the game whose connection method and session structure your group can actually sustain.
