Left 4 Dead 2 is the best pick if your group wants focused co-op campaigns and familiar first-person shooting. Choose World War Z for huge hordes and cross-platform co-op, 7 Days to Die for crafting and fort-building, or Project Zomboid for slower, more deliberate survival. These games offer different kinds of co-op rather than one exact substitute. No More Room in Hell 2 is also no longer an Early Access game: its Steam listing gives August 11, 2026, as its 1.0 release date.

How the alternatives compare

Game Best for What co-op looks like How it differs from No More Room in Hell 2
Left 4 Dead 2 Campaign runs and straightforward co-op FPS action Four survivors, five campaigns, online co-op, and a dynamic AI Director; Steam lists Workshop support. More tightly focused on replayable campaign runs than survival across objective-based missions.
World War Z Large swarms and cross-platform co-op Four-player co-op, story campaigns, and class progression. The PlayStation listing describes an optional first-person mode for Aftermath and Horde Mode XL on PS5. Third-person by default, with spectacle and horde scale at the center of its appeal.
7 Days to Die Crafting, exploration, survival, and building defenses Open-world survival where preparation and construction are central activities. Less like a mission-based shooter; the group spends more time shaping its own shelter and survival plan.
Project Zomboid Deliberate survival in a persistent sandbox Online multiplayer with player-run servers and local split-screen co-op, alongside detailed survival systems. Slower and more systems-driven than an action-focused FPS. Steam still labels it Early Access and says it avoids setting an ETA for 1.0.

Which game should your group choose?

Choose Left 4 Dead 2 for campaign-based FPS co-op

Its five campaigns and four-survivor format make it the clearest choice when your group wants to start a run, work together through a sequence of levels, and finish the session without managing a long-term base. Steam describes a dynamic AI Director that varies encounters, which supports replaying the campaigns with friends.

Choose World War Z for hordes and cross-platform play

World War Z puts large zombie swarms at the forefront, and its Steam listing specifies four-player co-op and cross-platform multiplayer. It is a strong fit when the group values horde scale and wants to play across supported platforms. The PlayStation listing notes that Aftermath offers an optional first-person mode and Horde Mode XL on PS5; those specific features should not be assumed to apply to every platform or edition.

Choose 7 Days to Die if survival preparation is the point

Pick this when the fun is gathering resources, crafting equipment, exploring an open world, and building a defensible base with friends. Its sandbox loop asks for more ongoing preparation and construction than a campaign shooter does, so it suits groups happy to make their own goals rather than simply advance through missions.

Choose Project Zomboid for a slower sandbox

Project Zomboid favors careful survival and persistent play over fast FPS action. Its Steam listing describes online multiplayer through player-run servers and local split-screen co-op, giving groups different ways to play together. Steam currently labels it Early Access and says there is no ETA for 1.0, so choose it with that development status in mind.

What No More Room in Hell 2 offers as a comparison

No More Room in Hell 2 remains a relevant point of comparison, but its status has changed: Steam lists its 1.0 release date as August 11, 2026, and describes six maps. The listing emphasizes eight-player co-op, infection, permadeath, proximity communication, and objective-based Scenario Mode. That combination makes it a tactical survival-horror option for groups that want risk and coordination across missions; the alternatives above are better fits when the group wants campaigns, exceptionally large hordes, or a more open-ended survival loop.
