Best Commanders for a Martial-Arts-Themed MTG Deck

Choose your martial-arts fantasy first: Goro-Goro and Satoru is the strongest all-around ninja-and-combat face commander, Isshin, Two Heavens as One is the premier samurai attack-trigger commander, Chishiro, the Shattered Blade leads the best equipment-and-aura warrior build, and Satoru Umezawa is the most focused stealth-and-ninjutsu commander.

All four can produce a convincing martial-arts deck, but they ask you to play very different games. The right choice depends on whether you want evasive creatures, disciplined attacks, sword training, or creatures appearing from your hand at exactly the right moment.

The four best martial-arts commanders at a glance

Commander Color identity Martial-arts fantasy Primary combat pattern Best for Main trade-off
Goro-Goro and Satoru Blue-red Ninja mobility with a broader combat-hero feel Get evasive creatures through, then turn successful combat into additional pressure Players who want one commander to support ninjas, haste, and ordinary attackers Needs creatures to connect; stalled boards reduce its output
Isshin, Two Heavens as One White-black-red Samurai discipline and coordinated assaults Declare attackers repeatedly and multiply attack-trigger value Go-wide decks that want every attack to generate more resources or damage Relies on a visible battlefield and can lose momentum to sweepers
Chishiro, the Shattered Blade Green-red Weapon training, modified creatures, and a forest-warrior story Build up creatures with Auras and Equipment, then exploit modified-creature payoffs Players who want a tangible sword-training theme and large combat bodies Aura and Equipment investment can be punished if the carrier is removed
Satoru Umezawa Blue-black Stealth, ninjutsu, and a ruthless ninja network Attack with hard-to-block creatures and exchange them for ninjas from hand Dedicated ninja players who enjoy timing tricks and hand management Requires reliable evasion and enough cards in hand to keep the swaps flowing

These are strategic lanes rather than a ranking based on tournament statistics. Commander power is highly dependent on the rest of the 99, the removal available in your group, and the speed everyone agreed to before the game.

What a martial-arts deck means in Commander

Commander is a multiplayer format built around a legendary creature or artifact that leads a 100-card deck. The deck contains one commander plus 99 other cards, uses singleton construction except for basic lands, and restricts every card to the commander’s color identity. Players normally begin at 40 life, and a player loses after taking 21 combat damage from one commander over the course of the game. Four-player free-for-all is the standard experience.

  • INCLUDES ACCESSORIES AND DECK BOX: Also comes with 10 two-sided tokens, a deck box for storage, and punchout counters to keep track of creature buffs

That structure makes martial-arts flavor more than a creature-type exercise. Your commander needs to give the deck a repeatable combat plan that remains useful when three opponents can block, remove threats, and reset the battlefield. A convincing build therefore combines three layers:

  • Theme: ninjas, samurai, warriors, weapons, training, stealth, or disciplined attacks.
  • Access: creatures that can attack safely, ways to make attackers difficult to block, and enough mana to deploy threats and interaction in the same turn.
  • Recovery: card draw, recursion, token production, or a second wave that lets the deck rebuild after removal.

The commander determines which of those layers is easiest to support. Goro-Goro and Satoru and Satoru Umezawa care most about connecting with creatures; Isshin cares about the act of declaring attackers; Chishiro cares about what you attach to your creatures and how those modifications translate into board presence.

Goro-Goro and Satoru: the best all-around ninja combat commander

Why choose this lane

Choose Goro-Goro and Satoru when you want the deck to feel like a martial-arts ensemble rather than a single narrow tribe. Its blue-red identity supports evasive creatures, ninjas, haste-oriented threats, and combat tricks. The commander rewards you for making combat damage happen, so every successful attack can advance your board instead of merely lowering an opponent’s life total.

This is the most flexible face commander of the four. You can begin with a ninja shell, add ordinary creatures that are cheap and difficult to block, and still retain a coherent plan if the table removes your first wave. The result feels like a fast-moving team: small attackers open a path, ninjas exploit the opening, and later turns convert those connections into a larger threat.

Core deck priorities

  • Cheap evasive creatures: Favor creatures that are unblockable, difficult to block, or naturally evasive so the first attack is reliable.
  • Ninjas and combat-pivot creatures: Include threats that become more valuable when they enter after an attacker has already connected.
  • Haste payoffs: Haste lets a freshly deployed creature matter immediately and makes rebuilding after a board wipe less painful.
  • Ways to force damage through: Use temporary evasion, bounce effects, protection, or combat manipulation rather than relying on a single enormous attacker.
  • Card flow: Connecting with creatures is only useful if it keeps your hand stocked; include repeatable draw and low-cost ways to refill after an exchange.

How games usually play

Early turns should establish one or two attackers that can survive a blocker. Do not spend every card on a single spectacular turn; the deck is strongest when it can attack, deploy a new threat, and hold up interaction. Once opponents respect your evasive creatures, vary your attacks so they cannot simply leave one blocker back each turn. A haste creature after a wipe or a ninja arriving through an unblocked attacker can restore pressure before opponents rebuild.

Weak points and fixes

The deck stalls when opponents can block everything or remove the creature that was supposed to open combat. Fix that by diversifying your evasion: combine naturally hard-to-block creatures with temporary effects, rather than placing all your hopes on one permanent. It also struggles if the list contains too many expensive ninjas and not enough early attackers. Keep the curve low enough that you can present a threat and protect it in the same turn.

Isshin, Two Heavens as One: the best samurai attack-trigger commander

Why choose this lane

Isshin is the clearest choice for a samurai deck built around discipline and formation. Its white-black-red identity gives access to a broad range of attackers and permanents whose abilities trigger when creatures attack. Isshin’s central contribution is multiplying those attack-trigger rewards, so a single coordinated assault can produce far more value than the same creatures would create under another commander.

The deck does not need every creature to be a samurai. A martial-arts theme is strongest when the creature types, art, and mechanics point in the same direction, but Isshin’s actual engine is the attack step. Token makers, creatures that reward attacking, and permanents that generate cards or resources when attackers are declared all belong here.

Core deck priorities

  • Attack-trigger permanents: Prioritize abilities that trigger when one or more creatures attack, then check whether Isshin increases their output.
  • Wide boards: Several modest attackers usually outperform one large creature because they create more attack-trigger opportunities and make blocking difficult.
  • Token production: Tokens give the deck a renewable supply of attackers after trades and make each combat step more consequential.
  • Combat protection: Include ways to protect the board from damage-based interaction and to recover after a sweeper.
  • Post-combat value: Draw, treasures, removal, or other resources generated by attacks prevent the deck from becoming an empty-handed aggro list.

How games usually play

Develop a board without exposing every important permanent at once. The ideal turn is an attack that creates value before blocks are declared, followed by a second main phase in which you add another attacker or hold up interaction. Because the plan is visible, opponents often save removal for Isshin or for the permanent that produces the most attack triggers. Be willing to attack with less valuable creatures to preserve your engine and keep the table’s defenses spread out.

Weak points and fixes

Isshin loses momentum when the battlefield is repeatedly cleared or when opponents can make profitable blocks every turn. Build in a rebuild package: creatures that replace themselves, token engines that operate from a single permanent, and recursion that does not require you to overextend. Avoid filling the list with attack triggers that do nothing unless you already have a large board; those cards are win-more when ahead and dead when behind.

Chishiro, the Shattered Blade: the best equipment-and-aura warrior commander

Why choose this lane

Chishiro is the natural leader for a sword-training story. Wizards of the Coast describes Chishiro as an elite samurai of the Order of Jukai who could channel the magic of Kaima, Kami of Forest Fellowship, through his sword. In deck terms, that identity translates into green-red creatures that become more dangerous as you attach Auras and Equipment and as your board accumulates modified creatures.

This lane feels different from the evasive ninja commanders. You are not trying to slip past every blocker; you are building a fighter that can survive combat, then using that improved body to make the next creature better. The deck rewards careful sequencing because the same Equipment or Aura may be valuable on several different creatures over the game.

Core deck priorities

  • Reliable carriers: Use creatures with useful combat abilities or built-in resilience so an attachment is not lost for no value.
  • Efficient Auras and Equipment: Favor pieces that grant more than power and toughness, such as evasion, protection, trample, or card advantage.
  • Modified-creature payoffs: Include creatures and permanents that reward you for having modified creatures, not only cards that modify them.
  • Attachment logistics: Add ways to move Equipment, recover key pieces, or gain value when an enchanted creature leaves the battlefield.
  • Mana acceleration: Auras, Equipment, and creatures compete for mana, so acceleration is especially important if you want to develop and equip in one turn.

How games usually play

Start with a low-cost creature, then attach one piece that changes combat immediately. As the game develops, spread modifications across multiple bodies instead of putting every resource on one target. A single enormous creature looks threatening but invites a two-for-one removal spell; two moderately improved attackers force more difficult blocks and leave you with a second carrier if the first is removed.

Weak points and fixes

The classic failure mode is investing several cards in a creature that dies before it attacks. Reduce that risk with protection, haste, resilient carriers, and attachments that replace themselves or remain useful when moved. Keep the Aura and Equipment count disciplined: a card that only grants power is less valuable than one that also solves evasion, protection, or card flow.

Satoru Umezawa: the best dedicated ninja commander

Why choose this lane

Satoru Umezawa is the focused choice for players who want the deck to behave like a covert operation. Wizards’ Kamigawa character guide calls him the ruthless leader of the Hyozan Reckoners and a master ninja. His blue-black identity supports stealth, hard-to-block attackers, ninjas, and creatures that can appear from your hand during combat.

Unlike Goro-Goro and Satoru, which can comfortably widen into a general combat deck, Satoru Umezawa wants nearly every creature to serve the ninjutsu plan. The satisfaction comes from presenting an innocuous attacker, letting an opponent decide whether to block, and then replacing that attacker with a more dangerous ninja at the point where blocks are no longer possible.

Core deck priorities

  • Hard-to-block enablers: Build a high density of creatures that can attack safely on the early turns.
  • Ninjas with meaningful entry effects: Your ninjas should provide cards, removal, disruption, or another immediate benefit when they enter through combat.
  • Hand management: Ninjutsu exchanges creatures from the battlefield for cards in hand, so draw effects and inexpensive cantrips keep the engine supplied.
  • Combat tricks: Protection and instant-speed interaction let you preserve an attacker and punish an opponent who taps out.
  • Flexible creatures: Include creatures that are acceptable hard-cast threats when ninjutsu is unavailable.

How games usually play

Use the first turns to establish an attacker that opponents cannot block profitably. Keep a ninja in hand rather than exposing every threat before combat; the uncertainty is part of the deck’s protection. As opponents learn the pattern, vary which creature attacks and sometimes decline to ninjutsu so that you do not spend resources into open removal. The deck is strongest when every attack creates a difficult choice for the defender.

Weak points and fixes

Satoru suffers when the deck draws expensive creatures without reliable attackers or when repeated blockers make combat impossible. Increase the number of low-cost evasive creatures, add ways to remove or bypass a key blocker, and maintain enough ordinary creatures that you can still play a fair game when the ninjutsu line is disrupted. Because the commander itself can attract early removal, make sure the deck functions for at least a few turns without it.

Which commander fits your preferred martial-arts story?

If you want to feel like… Choose Build around
A mobile squad that wins by slipping through defenses Goro-Goro and Satoru Evasive creatures, ninjas, haste, and repeated combat connections
A samurai formation that turns every attack into a larger event Isshin, Two Heavens as One Attack triggers, tokens, and wide combat steps
A warrior who grows stronger through weapons and training Chishiro, the Shattered Blade Auras, Equipment, modified creatures, and resilient carriers
A stealth specialist who swaps attackers for threats from hand Satoru Umezawa Unblockable creatures, ninjas, hand size, and combat timing

If two lanes appeal equally, use the color identity as the tie-breaker. Blue-red favors tempo and haste, Mardu favors broad attack-trigger support, green-red favors permanent-based creature growth, and blue-black favors evasion, disruption, and hand-to-battlefield tricks.

How to build the deck step by step

  1. Write the combat sentence. Before choosing individual cards, complete a sentence such as “I win by connecting with evasive creatures,” “I multiply attack triggers,” “I make modified creatures the best bodies on the table,” or “I ninjutsu a threat into combat.” Remove cards that do not help that sentence.
  2. Set the creature curve. Martial-arts decks need attackers before they need finishers. Reserve enough low-cost creature slots to make the first attack realistic, then add midgame threats and only a small number of expensive closers.
  3. Choose your evasion package. Goro-Goro and Satoru and Satoru Umezawa need creatures that connect; Isshin needs enough attackers to make blocking difficult; Chishiro needs ways for a trained creature to convert size into actual damage. Treat evasion as part of the engine, not a decorative bonus.
  4. Add the commander-specific payoffs. For Goro-Goro and Satoru, prioritize combat-damage and haste rewards. For Isshin, prioritize attack triggers. For Chishiro, prioritize modification and attachment payoffs. For Satoru Umezawa, prioritize ninjas and creatures that are good ninjutsu targets.
  5. Build interaction around combat. Use a mixture of creature removal, protection, and ways to handle problematic artifacts or enchantments. Instant-speed spells are particularly valuable because they let you attack while keeping opponents uncertain about blocks and tricks.
  6. Plan for the first board wipe. Include card draw, token production, recursion, or creatures that replace themselves. A martial-arts deck should be able to rebuild with one or two cards rather than needing to redraw an entire battlefield.
  7. Balance mana for your actual turns. Count colored requirements, not just total mana value. Chishiro lists often need mana for both a creature and an attachment; ninja lists need mana available during combat; Isshin lists need enough mana to deploy several attackers before committing to an attack.
  8. Test against blockers, not goldfish draws. Practice with three opponents represented by realistic blockers and removal. Ask whether your deck can produce a safe attack on turn four or five, recover after one sweeper, and still function when the commander costs additional mana from the command zone.

Power level, resilience, and the Commander social contract

Commander tax and the command zone

When your commander returns to the command zone and you cast it again from there, its cost increases by two generic mana for each previous cast from that zone. That tax matters more for commanders that are the deck’s only source of card advantage or evasion. Build enough independent enablers that a taxed commander is a bonus rather than a requirement.

When a commander would be put into a graveyard or exile, its owner can generally use the command-zone replacement option instead. The correct choice depends on whether your deck benefits from that zone, but the important construction lesson is to avoid assuming your commander will remain on the battlefield all game.

Resilience by commander

Commander Most common disruption Resilience plan
Goro-Goro and Satoru Blockers that shut off combat or removal aimed at the creature connecting Multiple kinds of evasion, haste, low-cost threats, and repeatable draw
Isshin Board wipes and effects that punish wide attacks Token engines, attack-trigger card advantage, and a measured rebuild package
Chishiro Removal of a creature carrying several attachments Resilient carriers, protection, movable Equipment, and attachments that provide value immediately
Satoru Umezawa Too few attackers, too few cards in hand, or blockers that invalidate ninjutsu Dense early evasion, flexible hard-cast creatures, draw, and instant-speed interaction

Brackets and table expectations

Wizards’ current Commander guidance presents brackets and Game Changers as optional social matchmaking tools, not a replacement for conversation. Before the game, tell the table whether your deck is a relaxed theme build, a tuned combat deck, or something intended to race faster strategies. Ask what kinds of extra-turn effects, mass land destruction, fast mana, or high-impact staples the group considers acceptable. A martial-arts theme can be casual in one pod and highly competitive in another depending on the surrounding 99.

Budget and availability without guessing at prices

There is no stable price or inventory figure to quote for these commanders: singles, reprints, regional supply, and retailer stock change constantly. Check the current printing and legality of each card immediately before buying. A singles build lets you select exactly the evasion, Equipment, Auras, and interaction your lane requires; a ready-to-play Commander product gives you a functioning 100-card shell but may need upgrades to match the martial-arts plan you have in mind.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To control cost, spend first on cards that make the combat engine work every game: early evasive creatures for the ninja commanders, attack-trigger payoffs for Isshin, and efficient attachments or modified-creature enablers for Chishiro. Add luxury upgrades only after the mana base, interaction, and recovery package are reliable. Replacing an expensive finisher with a cheaper card that performs the same role usually changes the deck less than cutting an early attacker or a protection spell.

Common mistakes and practical fixes

Choosing by creature type alone

A deck full of ninjas or samurai can still fail if it cannot attack safely or generate value after the first exchange. Start with the commander’s combat pattern, then use creature type and flavor to fill the supporting roles.

Overloading on expensive finishers

Martial-arts decks look cinematic when every card is a legendary warrior, but a hand full of costly threats cannot create early pressure. Keep the first turns focused on deployable attackers and reserve the top of the curve for cards that actually close a game.

Putting every resource on one creature

This is especially dangerous with Chishiro, but it also affects the other commanders when a single evasive attacker carries the entire plan. Spread equipment, auras, and protection across enough bodies that one removal spell does not end your combat step.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Attacking on autopilot

Isshin and the ninja commanders reward deliberate combat decisions. Count possible blocks, identify which attack trigger matters most, and decide whether the value of a ninjutsu exchange is worth spending a card. Passing on a marginal attack can preserve the threat of a stronger attack next turn.

Ignoring the post-wipe game

If the deck has no way to draw cards, create replacement bodies, or recur key pieces, one board wipe turns a strong theme into a spectator role. Reserve dedicated slots for rebuilding before adding another narrow payoff.

Final recommendation

Pick Goro-Goro and Satoru for the broadest martial-arts experience and the easiest mix of ninjas, evasive attackers, and haste. Pick Isshin, Two Heavens as One when the fantasy is a samurai formation whose coordinated attacks produce multiplied value. Pick Chishiro, the Shattered Blade for a weapon-focused warrior that grows through Auras, Equipment, and modified-creature payoffs. Pick Satoru Umezawa when you want the purest ninja game: hidden information, unblockable attackers, and threats arriving from hand in the middle of combat.
