Cassia is the strongest all-purpose combat-support pick; Argenta is the go-to for ranged damage and clearing groups; Abelard is the frontline protector; and Yrliet excels at precision sniping. There is no single companion who is best for every party. This is a role-based guide for choosing among companions in Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, not a definitive patch-specific tier list. It covers base-game companions and notes the DLC requirements for additional recruits.
Best companions by role
Party choices work best when companions cover different jobs. The game’s tactical combat emphasizes positioning, cover, weapons, and abilities, so a support character, a damage source, and a frontline option can complement one another better than several characters competing for the same role. Owlcat describes the game’s combat and companions on its official game page.

| Companion | Best fit | Why choose them |
|---|---|---|
| Cassia | Combat support and control | Officer and Navigator abilities can support allies and influence the battlefield. She is especially appealing when your party can make good use of buffs and extra actions. |
| Argenta | Ranged damage and horde clearing | Her profile highlights bolters, flamers, and repositioning, making her a natural choice for ranged pressure and groups of enemies. Her early impact can depend on difficulty and build progression. |
| Abelard | Frontline protection | He brings close-combat damage, taunting, and protection for other companions. |
| Yrliet | Precision sniping | Her speed and accuracy suit a role focused on removing priority targets. |
These are role recommendations, not measured rankings of damage or win rates. Owlcat’s character profiles describe the companions’ intended strengths; a companion build guide offers additional editorial context, but its judgments can change with patches: Gamer Guides’ companion guide.
Which companion is best for combat?
Choose Cassia for support and battlefield control
Cassia is the clearest choice if “best” means helping the whole party perform. Owlcat’s retrospective on its companion survey says she came first for combat efficiency, and describes that result as tied to her unique origin. That is a survey outcome, not a controlled combat benchmark. Her support and control are most valuable when your other characters can capitalize on the advantages she creates.

- Story-Rich Classical RPG: Made in close partnership with Games Workshop by Owlcat Games, developers of the critically acclaimed Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous.
- Explore the Koronus Expanse: Travel between a multitude of systems aboard your personal giant voidship in a barely charted and incredibly perilous region of space.
- Gather Your Crew: Build a retinue of righteous heroes, twisted psykers, and perfidious xenos who offer counsel, aid you in battle, and follow you into the darkness between the stars.
- Your Decisions Matter: Show mercy or disdain, stay faithful to the God-Emperor, or consort with enemies of Mankind as every decision changes the open world and those who inhabit it.
- Tactical Turn-Based Combat: Slaughter the enemies of Mankind in fully-fledged isometric turn-based tactical combat using cover, the environment, careful positioning, and powerful companion abilities.
Choose Argenta for ranged pressure
Argenta is a strong fit when the party needs a dedicated ranged attacker or help dealing with groups. Her official profile points to bolters, flamers, and repositioning. Her effectiveness may depend on the difficulty setting and how her build develops, so do not treat a guide’s ranking as a guarantee that she will lead damage in every run.
Choose Abelard to hold the front
Abelard provides close-range offense while helping protect allies. Owlcat’s official description calls him a melee damage dealer who can taunt enemies and shield companions from damage. That makes him a practical option when you want someone to engage opponents directly rather than leave fragile or ranged characters exposed.
Choose Yrliet to remove priority targets
Yrliet’s speed and accuracy suit a sniper role: focus her on dangerous individual enemies rather than expecting her to fill the same job as a group-clearing attacker. Her value is therefore partly about target selection and how the rest of your party handles the enemies she does not prioritize.

Who is the best companion for story and dialogue?
If you mean narrative interest rather than combat efficiency, Owlcat’s survey points to Abelard. The studio reported that he was the most interesting companion under its story, dialogue, and interactions criterion. The same survey treated combat efficiency, romance, and attractiveness as separate preference categories, so those results should not be collapsed into one overall ranking.

Owlcat also said it reviewed over 5,000 comments for a separate free-form question about favorite NPCs. That figure is not the sample size for the companion rankings, and the survey findings describe player preferences rather than an objective measure of story quality.

Heinrix: psyker powers alongside melee
Heinrix is a flexible option when you want a companion who combines psyker abilities with close combat. Consider him for the particular tools he adds to your party rather than as a universal replacement for Cassia, Argenta, Abelard, or Yrliet.
Rank #3
Pasqal: technical and weapon specialization
Pasqal brings a Tech-Priest and mechanic profile, along with specialized weapon options. He is a role-dependent pick when those capabilities fit your party’s needs; the available guide material does not establish him as an across-the-board top choice.
Are DLC companions included?
The main recommendations above focus on the base-game roster. The cited community-maintained companion reference lists Kibellah as a Void Shadows companion and Solomorne as a Lex Imperialis companion. You need the corresponding DLC to access those characters. Owlcat’s Lex Imperialis announcement, dated 2025-04-25, discusses the familiar system and Solomorne’s cyber-mastiff. Check the in-game roster and current DLC details for availability, as content can change.
How to build a party around your roster
- Pick a support or control character. Cassia is the clearest recommendation if you want one companion to strengthen the rest of the party.
- Cover damage. Choose Argenta for ranged pressure and groups, or Yrliet for precision against priority targets.
- Decide how you want to handle the frontline. Abelard is the direct choice for close combat, taunting, and protecting allies.
- Fill a specific gap with a specialist. Consider Heinrix for psyker abilities alongside melee or Pasqal for technical and weapon options.
- Adjust for difficulty and progression. A support-heavy pick may matter more on higher difficulties, while a damage dealer may feel more efficient on lower ones; this is a guide-specific judgment, not a fixed game rule.
There is no independently tested, patch-specific ranking or controlled damage comparison establishing one optimal party across all companions. Owlcat’s survey and character profiles help answer different questions—player preference and intended role—while build-guide rankings remain editorial judgments.
