The rule that matters most is technical: the server and every connecting player must use the same mod list, in the same order, with compatible versions. What a Conan Exiles server mod actually changes
Conan Exiles mods are Steam Workshop items installed by server software and by the players who join. A dedicated server does not make a client download an arbitrary collection safely or automatically in every situation; the administrator must publish the intended list, and each player must subscribe to and update those same items.
Mods fall into three practical groups:
- Administration: permissions, teleportation, moderation and server-management tools.
- Quality of life: inventory, building, pickup and interface improvements that preserve the base game’s general structure.
- Content overhauls: new systems, items or progression that can change the character of a server and require a commitment from its community.
Do not mix a current Workshop item with a similarly named Legacy item without checking compatibility. The two entries can have different code and different dependency requirements.

Which combination fits your server?
Administration-first server
Use Enhanced Pippi as the foundation when you or your moderators need practical control over a persistent world. It is the administration choice in the current community consensus, but it is not a cosmetic add-on: install the current item and avoid the incompatible Legacy entry.
One community guide says Enhanced Pippi requires ModControlPanel. The Workshop ID reported for that dependency is 3722388367, while other Steam pages show 1823412793 and 3036057084 for ModControlPanel entries. Because those IDs conflict, open the current Steam listing and confirm the dependency shown there before adding anything. Do not treat one copied ID as authoritative.
Vanilla-plus quality of life
IQOL, Pickup+, Stacksize Plus and Less Building Placement Restrictions make a coherent convenience package without committing the server to a new progression system. IQOL supplies the broadest general-purpose layer; Pickup+ addresses placed-object recovery; the stack and building mods target storage and construction.
Add Better Thralls if the server’s identity depends on follower combat or thrall management. Verify whether the specific Better Thralls entry is server-capable or whether you are looking at the separate client-side Better Thrall Stats interface item.

Content-overhaul server
Emberlight and Age of Calamitous are not minor tweaks. They add enough content and settings to shape progression, crafting and the expectations of new players. Pick one only after deciding what experience the server is offering, documenting it for players and testing a fresh character or test world.
Emberlight is identified by Workshop ID 1369802940. Age of Calamitous is commonly seen on PvE servers and supplies custom server settings, but the available material does not establish a single current Workshop ID; locate the active Steam item rather than guessing one.
How to install mods on a dedicated Conan Exiles server
1. Install the dedicated-server software
- In Steam, open the Tools section and install the free Conan Exiles Dedicated Server Launcher.
- Use the launcher to set the server name and an administrator password before exposing the server to players.
This is the self-hosting route. It gives you direct control, but you are responsible for Workshop updates, configuration backups and recovery when a game patch breaks a mod.

- Open each mod’s Steam Workshop page.
- Copy the number at the end of its URL. That number is the Workshop ID used by the server configuration.
- Record the chosen item name, version and any listed dependency in a small change log. This prevents an Enhanced or Legacy entry from being substituted later.
Known IDs from the current community lists are Enhanced Pippi 3725018456, the incompatible Legacy Pippi item 880454836, IQOL 2275543723, ModControlPanel as reported by one guide 3722388367, and Emberlight 1369802940. The ModControlPanel number requires confirmation on Steam because other listings report 1823412793 and 3036057084.

3. Add the IDs through the host interface or configuration
- If your server provider supplies a control panel, open its Mods section and enter the Workshop IDs there.
- For a self-hosted installation, place the IDs in the server’s
modlist.txtin the load order you have selected. - Save the configuration and restart the server so it can download or mount the Workshop items.
The exact control-panel labels differ by provider. Community guides also show a WorkshopModList setting in ServerSettings.ini, but the available material does not verify that key against current Funcom documentation. Treat an INI snippet as a lead to check, not as a guaranteed universal syntax.
4. Install dependencies before dependent mods
When a Workshop page lists a dependency such as ModControlPanel, add and update that dependency first, then install the mod that uses it. A missing or incorrect dependency can look like a load-order failure even when the main mod ID is correct.
5. Set and test the load order
- Keep dependencies above the mods that require them in
modlist.txt, unless the current Workshop instructions explicitly specify another order. - Start the server with only the planned list.
- Join with an administrator account and test the features that motivated the installation: Pippi administration, pickup behavior, building placement, thrall behavior or overhaul content.
- Change one mod at a time during troubleshooting. This identifies the offending item faster than replacing the entire list.
6. Prepare every client
- Give players the exact mod names and Workshop items, not just similar search terms.
- Have every player subscribe to and update the same items before connecting.
- Ask players to close the game after Workshop updates and relaunch it so the new files are mounted.
- Keep the server’s list and the client list in identical order as well as identical membership.
Why players cannot join a modded server
One-character list mismatch
The most common failure is a difference between the server’s list and a player’s list. A missing ID, an extra ID, a duplicate entry or a changed order can block joining; community reports also describe silent crashes. Compare the two lists character by character, remove obsolete entries, update each Workshop item and try again.
Enhanced and Legacy items are mixed
Enhanced Pippi and Legacy Pippi are not interchangeable. The Legacy Pippi item (880454836) is specifically reported as incompatible with Enhanced Pippi. Fashionist likewise has separate Enhanced and Legacy entries, and Legacy-only mods may fail with the current build. Remove the old item from both server and clients before testing the current one.

A dependency ID is wrong
ModControlPanel is the clearest example: three different IDs appear in community material. If Enhanced Pippi does not load, open the current Steam Workshop page for the required dependency and use the ID shown there. Do not combine IDs from different guides without checking which item is currently maintained.
A patch has invalidated a mod
Game updates can make a previously working Workshop item stop loading. Managed hosting services may automate Workshop updates, reducing manual work when patches arrive; self-hosted administrators must monitor updates, keep backups and be prepared to remove or roll back the affected item. The absence of a current official Funcom mod-configuration manual means that community instructions should be validated against the Workshop page and the server’s own logs.
The server starts but a feature is missing
- Confirm that the item is installed on the server, not only subscribed on the client.
- Check that the chosen mod is server-capable; some similarly named items are client-side UI modifications.
- Review dependencies and load order.
- Test in a clean save or backup copy before changing a live world.

Maintenance plan for a stable modded server
- Before adding a mod: record its exact Workshop item, ID, current version and dependencies.
- Before an update: back up the server configuration and world data, and announce a maintenance window.
- After an update: start with administrators, test the affected feature and check that a normal client can join.
- When removing a mod: read its Workshop notes and test on a copy of the save; removing content that a world uses can have consequences.
- When onboarding players: distribute one canonical list and ask players to update before reporting a connection failure.
- When troubleshooting: make one change at a time and retain the last known-good list.
What is officially documented, and what is not
