Bethesda’s current catalog repeatedly lists Xbox Series X|S for major releases such as Starfield, DOOM and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, while Xbox ownership makes Game Pass the most important subscription advantage. Choose PlayStation 5 instead if you prefer Sony’s ecosystem, already own a substantial PlayStation library, or mainly want current Call of Duty releases: Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is listed for both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The short answer
| Buyer priority | Best fit | Reason | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bethesda releases plus a subscription library | Xbox Series X | Xbox Series X|S appears throughout Bethesda’s current catalog, and Game Pass is the key value differentiator. | Game availability, subscription tiers and regional offers change; verify the exact listing before buying. |
| PlayStation ecosystem and current Call of Duty | PlayStation 5 | Activision lists Black Ops 7 for PlayStation 5 as well as Xbox and PC. | Call of Duty alone does not require an Xbox, but Bethesda access varies by title. |
| Existing friends, purchases or accessories | The platform your group already uses | Library ownership, saved progress, social groups and peripherals can outweigh a theoretical catalog advantage. | Check each game’s cross-play, cross-progression and edition rules instead of assuming they are universal. |
What Bethesda availability looks like on each console
Bethesda’s official catalog lists Xbox Series X|S for current releases including Starfield, DOOM and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. The same catalog also lists PlayStation 5 for several Bethesda games. That means the decision is not a simple “all Bethesda games versus no Bethesda games” split: availability is title-specific, and the platform icons on the game’s current store page are the authoritative check.

How to read Bethesda listings
- Xbox Series X|S is the consistent first-party destination. Microsoft’s ownership of Bethesda makes Xbox the safer choice when your priority is access to the newest Xbox-listed releases and a single subscription library.
- PlayStation 5 can still be a valid Bethesda machine. Several Bethesda titles are listed for PS5, so a PS5 owner should check the individual game rather than assume a blanket exclusion.
- Do not infer availability from an older generation. A listing for Xbox One or PlayStation 4 does not by itself establish a current-generation version, performance mode or upgrade entitlement.
- Edition matters. Remasters, expansions and bundled editions can have different platform listings. Confirm the exact edition you intend to buy.
Examples that matter to a buyer
| Game | What the current catalog establishes | What you still need to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Starfield | Xbox Series X|S is listed by Bethesda. | Whether the edition, add-ons or any later platform listing you want is available on your chosen console. |
| DOOM | Xbox Series X|S is listed by Bethesda. | The specific DOOM entry, generation and included content; the franchise contains multiple releases. |
| The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered | Xbox Series X|S is listed by Bethesda. | The exact PS5 and edition listing in your region before purchase. |
This distinction is why Xbox Series X is the default recommendation rather than an assertion that every Bethesda game is Xbox-exclusive. If one particular Bethesda title is your main reason to buy, inspect that title’s official platform list first.
What Activision Blizzard availability means for Call of Duty and Diablo
Call of Duty does not force an Xbox purchase
Activision’s official Black Ops 7 support information says it is available on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, and PC through Xbox on PC, Battle.net and Steam. Therefore, a buyer choosing PS5 for Call of Duty is not giving up the current release identified in the official listing.

The generation detail is useful. If you own an older console, the listing includes Xbox One and PlayStation 4 for Black Ops 7; if you are buying new hardware, Series X|S and PS5 are the current-generation entries. Check the store page for your region because editions, bundles and online-service requirements can change.
Diablo IV and the Game Pass milestone
Xbox announced in 2024 that Diablo IV would be the first Activision Blizzard game added to Xbox Game Pass, beginning March 28. That dated milestone explains why Game Pass is relevant to an Activision Blizzard buyer, but it does not guarantee that every Activision Blizzard game is currently included, nor does it establish the current tier or price. Check the live Game Pass catalog and the terms for your region before subscribing.
Other Activision Blizzard games
Availability differs by franchise, release, generation and platform agreement. Treat the publisher’s page for the exact game as the final authority. Do not assume that a game appearing on Xbox is exclusive, that a PlayStation version has identical content, or that a subscription entitlement includes downloadable expansions. Read the edition description and the subscription entitlement together.
Why Xbox Series X is the stronger Bethesda-first purchase
Catalog alignment
Xbox Series X|S is repeatedly present in Bethesda’s current-release listings. For someone building a library around Bethesda, that reduces the risk of discovering that a new title is unavailable on the console they just purchased. It also keeps Bethesda releases, saves and purchases in one Xbox account ecosystem.

Subscription leverage
Xbox’s first-party ownership gives Game Pass strategic value beyond a normal third-party rental catalog. Bethesda games are part of the same corporate ecosystem as the subscription, and the Diablo IV announcement shows how Activision Blizzard titles can enter that service. The practical benefit depends on the live catalog, the tier that grants the entitlement and your region; those details are not permanent.
One console for Bethesda and Call of Duty
Series X covers the Xbox-listed Bethesda releases while also supporting the current Black Ops 7 listing. If your household wants one machine for both publishers, it is the least complicated route when Bethesda is the deciding factor.
When PlayStation 5 is the better purchase
Your social group is on PlayStation
Multiplayer habits can matter more than a catalog preference. If your regular Call of Duty group uses PlayStation voice chat, accounts and accessories, the social friction of moving platforms may outweigh Game Pass savings. Confirm each game’s cross-play and cross-progression rules rather than assuming your progress follows you.

Digital purchases, physical discs, saved data and accessories have replacement costs that are easy to underestimate. List the games you actually play, mark which are transferable to PS5, and compare that value with the Bethesda titles you would need to buy again on Xbox. A PS5 owner who mainly wants Black Ops 7 may gain little by switching.

You prefer Sony’s hardware and services
Controller layout, user interface, friends list and media setup are daily factors. If those are your priorities and the Bethesda titles you want are listed for PS5, the platform can be the more satisfying long-term choice even without Game Pass.

How to choose without guessing
- Write your must-play list. Include exact games and editions, not just franchises. Put Bethesda titles, Black Ops 7, Diablo IV and any older games in separate rows.
- Check the official platform icons. Confirm Xbox Series X|S, PS5, Xbox One or PS4 for every row. Record whether the listing is for the base game, a remaster or an expansion.
- Audit your current library. Count digital purchases, discs, downloadable content, saved progress and accessories on each platform. Note anything that cannot move with you.
- Model subscription use. Estimate how many included games you would actually play in a year. Then verify the current tier, recurring price, catalog status, online-play requirement and cancellation terms for your country.
- Price the complete setup. Include the console, extra storage if needed, a second controller, headset, online multiplayer access and the games that are not included in a subscription.
- Ask your multiplayer group. Find out which platform your friends use and whether your must-play games support cross-play and cross-progression.
- Choose the platform that removes the largest risk. For a Bethesda-heavy list, that is usually Xbox Series X. For a PlayStation-centered library with Call of Duty as the main new purchase, it is often PS5.
Storage, accessories and recurring costs
Storage planning
Large modern games can consume substantial space, and a subscription encourages installing more titles than you would otherwise buy. Before choosing, check the console’s usable capacity rather than only its advertised capacity. Compare the price and installation process for approved expansion storage, and decide whether you will routinely uninstall finished games or keep a rotating library installed.
Controllers and local multiplayer
Budget for the number of players in your household. Verify whether older controllers work with current-generation games; compatibility can differ between system menus, backward-compatible software and new releases. Include charging equipment, a headset and any accessibility peripherals you rely on.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSubscriptions and online play
Do not treat a monthly catalog as a permanent ownership substitute. Games can leave, tiers can change and online multiplayer may require a qualifying plan. Check the current terms immediately before checkout and calculate the annual recurring cost, not only the introductory offer.

Common buying mistakes and fixes
Mistake: treating a franchise as a platform guarantee
Fix: Verify the individual game. Bethesda has titles on Xbox Series X|S and several on PS5, while Activision’s Black Ops 7 listing spans both console families.
Mistake: assuming Game Pass includes everything
Fix: Search the live catalog, read the entitlement for your tier and confirm whether expansions or premium editions are separate purchases. The March 28, 2024 Diablo IV milestone is a dated fact, not a promise about every current Activision Blizzard release.
Mistake: ignoring the generation listed
Fix: Distinguish Xbox Series X|S and PS5 versions from Xbox One and PS4 versions. Check upgrade rights, performance options and save transfer rules for the exact edition.
Mistake: overlooking the existing library
Fix: Put replacement purchases and lost progress on the same budget sheet as the new console. A platform switch is expensive when most of your play time is tied to an established account.
Best Value
Mistake: buying on an unverified regional listing
Fix: Confirm the store region, language, age rating, subscription availability and payment terms. Catalogs, prices, bundles and game availability can differ by country and change over time.
Recommended choices by buyer type
The Bethesda specialist
Buy Xbox Series X and evaluate Game Pass after checking the current tier and catalog in your region. This profile benefits most from Xbox’s repeated presence in Bethesda’s current listings and from keeping the library in the first-party ecosystem.
The Call of Duty-first player
Choose the platform your friends and existing purchases use. Since Black Ops 7 is listed for both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, Bethesda access and social investment—not Call of Duty availability alone—should decide.
Recommended Free Tools
The Diablo and Bethesda subscriber
Start with Xbox Series X, then verify whether the current Game Pass tier includes the games and editions you intend to play. Remember that the documented Diablo IV addition began March 28, 2024; current inclusion must be checked live.
The multi-console household
Assign each console a clear role. If one system will host most Bethesda games and the other is retained for an existing PlayStation library, compare duplicate purchases, storage and controller costs before deciding whether both are justified.
Final buying checklist
- Every must-play game has a confirmed platform listing.
- You know whether you need the Series X|S or PS5 edition rather than an older-generation version.
- Your friends’ platform and cross-play rules are confirmed.
- Your existing purchases, saves and accessories are accounted for.
- You have checked the current subscription tier, catalog, price and region.
- Storage expansion, extra controllers and online-play costs are included in the budget.
- You understand which games are subscriptions and which are purchases you retain.
With those checks complete, Xbox Series X is the most defensible default for a buyer whose library will be led by Bethesda games. PlayStation 5 remains the right answer for a PlayStation-centered player or anyone buying primarily for Call of Duty, because the current Activision listing supports Sony’s console as well.
