What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Start with an XInput controller. For a fixed-camera game, choose Original or tank controls when you want the classic feel; choose Alternate or analog movement when camera-relative movement is easier to understand. Keyboard and mouse are equally workable when the PC port offers complete remapping.
There is no universal “correct” layout for older horror games. Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Dead Space ports expose different options, defaults and device support, so set up a reliable baseline, then adjust one control at a time in each game.

Quick settings guide
| Situation | Controller setting | Keyboard setting | Why it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preserve the original fixed-camera feel | Original or tank controls; use the left stick or D-pad deliberately | Keep forward, back and turn keys distinct and close to the action key | Movement remains predictable when the camera changes angle |
| Reduce directional confusion | Alternate or analog movement, if the game offers it | Remap movement and action to comfortable adjacent keys | Directions stay easier to follow as the viewpoint changes |
| Aim or turn feels sluggish | Raise stick sensitivity in small steps; Dead Space has separate stick and trigger sliders | Adjust only the look or aim bindings the game exposes | Small changes preserve control instead of making movement erratic |
| Controller is not detected | Prefer an XInput pad; use Steam Input only when the game or controller needs it | Confirm the game has keyboard focus, then rebind from its options menu | Older Windows ports are most consistent with the input standard they document |
| You need a known baseline | Load the default preset | Use RESET or defaults, then change one binding at a time | You can identify which individual change caused a problem |
This matrix is a starting point, not a promise that every title uses the same labels. Read the game’s own manual before changing a control scheme, especially for ports released years apart.

Why XInput is the safest controller starting point
XInput is the Windows controller standard documented by the classic PC horror examples. Capcom’s Resident Evil HD Remaster FAQ says the game supports full mouse and keyboard control and XInput devices such as Xbox 360 and Xbox One game pads. The game’s Steam listing likewise recommends a genuine Xbox 360 PC-compatible controller or a comparable XInput-based gamepad.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That recommendation matters because a controller can be electrically connected yet invisible to an older game. An XInput device presents the button and axis names that many Windows ports expect. A different controller standard may work only after translation through Steam’s controller layer, and the resulting button labels can be confusing.
What to look for when choosing a pad
- Choose an Xbox-compatible XInput controller if you want the least setup work.
- Prefer a left stick with a usable D-pad. Tank-control games often feel more deliberate on a D-pad, while an analog stick gives finer movement in games that support analog input.
- Use a wired connection while diagnosing a game. It removes wireless pairing and battery variables from the troubleshooting process.
- Keep the controller’s physical labels in mind, but configure actions by the game’s on-screen prompts rather than by memory from another title.
A PlayStation-style pad can still be usable. Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 FAQ documents keyboard and mouse plus XInput support, and notes that DualShock 4 use may require Steam Controller Configurator support. If that game does not react to the pad directly, enable the appropriate Steam controller configuration for the game, then check every prompt and binding in the title itself.
Tank controls, Original, Alternate and analog movement
“Tank controls” describe a character whose movement is tied to the character rather than to the camera: forward moves the character ahead, back reverses, and left or right turns the character. A fixed camera can cut to a new angle while those directions remain unchanged. That deliberate friction is part of the tension in many classic survival-horror games.

Choose Original when control style is part of the experience
Resident Evil HD Remaster labels its traditional scheme Original. Capcom describes it as working like traditional tank controls. Use it when you want the timing, spatial memory and deliberate turning of the original design. Keep your thumb or fingers settled instead of sweeping the stick quickly whenever the camera changes.
On a controller, the left stick is the usual movement input; the D-pad can be useful when you want binary, repeatable directions. On a keyboard, assign forward, back, turn-left and turn-right to separate keys. Do not combine turning with a camera-relative movement key unless the game explicitly supports that interpretation.
Choose Alternate when camera-relative movement is clearer
Resident Evil HD Remaster also provides Alternate, which allows fluid movement in any direction. This can reduce the momentary confusion caused by a camera cut because pushing in a direction moves the character relative to the current view rather than preserving the character’s old heading.

Alternate is not automatically better. A player who learned tank controls may find a sudden camera change more surprising with camera-relative movement, especially in a narrow corridor. Try it in a safe room or other low-risk area before committing to a full playthrough.
Use analog movement when the manual recommends it
The Silent Hill 2 PC manual lists both keyboard and gamepad bindings and recommends changing Walk/Run Control to Analog when an analog stick is available. That is a game-specific instruction, not a rule for every port. If a manual names an Analog option, use it as the starting point and verify whether the character’s walking and running behavior matches the description on screen.
Keyboard and mouse: when it is the better choice
Keyboard play is viable when the port exposes complete remapping. Capcom explicitly documents full mouse and keyboard control for Resident Evil HD Remaster, while other games may provide only partial rebinding or separate presets. A keyboard can be preferable if you want immediate, repeatable digital inputs, if your controller is not recognized, or if you need a layout that a gamepad cannot provide.
A practical keyboard layout
Begin with four distinct movement inputs: forward, back, turn-left and turn-right for tank controls, or the game’s four directional movement inputs for an alternate scheme. Put the primary action key beside movement rather than on the opposite side of the keyboard. Place inventory, map, aim and dodge commands where you can reach them without releasing movement.
Do not copy a layout from a different title blindly. A key that means “run” in one game may mean “confirm” or “draw weapon” in another. Use the options screen to identify every action, then test each one in a harmless area.
Mouse considerations
Some ports treat the mouse as a complete aiming and camera device; others expose only keyboard movement and a limited mouse function. If the game gives you no separate look or aim control, changing operating-system pointer speed will not create one. Adjust only the bindings and sensitivity sliders the game actually provides.

Set up a reliable baseline before playing
- Connect the input device before launching the game. With an XInput pad, Windows and Steam can identify the controller before the title reads its inputs.
- Open the game’s controls or options menu. Look for a preset, a control-style selector and a reset command. Silent Hill 2’s manual documents a RESET option for returning to defaults.
- Choose the movement model. Select Original or tank controls for the traditional fixed-camera behavior, Alternate for fluid directional movement, or Analog when the game specifically offers and recommends it.
- Test every essential action. Check movement, turn, run, interact, aim, attack, inventory and pause. A game can detect a pad while one or more buttons remain unassigned.
- Change one binding or slider. Save the change, test it, and record what happened. Changing several controls at once makes a later fault difficult to isolate.
- Save a profile if the game or Steam offers one. A separate profile for each title prevents a layout designed for tank controls from being applied to an analog game.
Launch a new session only after the basic actions work. This avoids discovering a missing interact or inventory command during a locked-room puzzle or combat encounter.
Game-specific guidance from the documented PC ports
Resident Evil HD Remaster
The documented choices are unusually clear: the game supports full mouse and keyboard control and XInput-based devices, and it offers Original and Alternate schemes. Start with an XInput controller, select Original if preserving traditional tank controls is your priority, and select Alternate if you find camera-relative movement easier to read.
The Steam listing recommends an Xbox 360 PC-compatible controller or a comparable XInput gamepad while also listing keyboard and mouse support. If prompts do not match your device, return to the in-game control screen rather than assuming the hardware is defective.

Capcom’s FAQ documents keyboard and mouse plus XInput support. It also warns that DualShock 4 operation may require Steam Controller Configurator support. For a pad that is not recognized directly, configure the controller at the Steam level, launch the game, and then verify the resulting button assignments in the game’s own options.
Do not assume that a working configuration from Resident Evil HD Remaster transfers unchanged. Keep a separate profile and check whether the title uses tank, alternate or another movement interpretation.
Silent Hill 2
The PC manual lists keyboard and gamepad bindings, includes RESET for restoring defaults, and recommends changing Walk/Run Control to Analog when an analog stick is available. That makes the manual’s Analog setting the sensible first test for a controller player.

Electronic Arts’ PC controls page documents Default, DS1, DS2 and Custom presets. It also provides separate stick-sensitivity and trigger-sensitivity sliders, each using a 0–100 range, with a documented default sensitivity of 0.
Because the game separates stick and trigger sensitivity, adjust the slider associated with the symptom. Raise stick sensitivity when turning or looking feels slow; change trigger sensitivity only when trigger response is the issue. Move in small increments, test in a safe area, and stop when the input feels predictable.
How to tune sensitivity without losing control
Sensitivity is not a universal quality setting. A high value can reduce the amount of stick travel needed for a turn, but it can also make small corrections harder. A low value gives more travel for the same rotation and may feel sluggish during a fast turn.
- Start at the game’s documented default. Dead Space lists 0 as its default for the stick and trigger sensitivity controls.
- Increase only the slider related to the problem, in a small step.
- Test the same movement several times: a slow camera correction, a 180-degree turn and an aim adjustment.
- Keep the new value only if all three remain controllable. Otherwise return one step toward the previous setting.
- Write down the final value for that game, because another title’s scale and default can differ.
Do not use operating-system mouse acceleration or a controller utility to compensate for a missing in-game setting unless the game provides no other option. Extra translation layers can change button prompts and make later troubleshooting harder.

The game sees no controller
- Reconnect the pad before launching the title.
- Prefer an XInput device for ports that document XInput support.
- Check whether Steam’s controller configuration is enabled only when the game or controller needs it; an unnecessary translation layer can create conflicting inputs.
- Open the game’s options and confirm that the controller preset is active.
The controller works in menus but not during play
Return to the in-game bindings and test movement and action separately. A menu can respond to one button even when movement axes are unassigned. Load the default preset or use RESET, then rebind one action at a time.

Button prompts do not match the pad
Prompts usually reflect the input profile the game detected, not the shape of the controller in your hand. If you are using a translated controller profile, inspect its mapping in Steam and then confirm each action inside the game. Keep the profile that produces consistent prompts rather than one that merely makes a single button work.
Tank controls feel impossible after a camera cut
Practice with Original in a safe room or hallway, using short taps rather than holding the stick. If the directional relationship remains confusing, switch to Alternate or Analog if the title offers it. This is a movement-style decision, not a sign that the controller is faulty.
Keyboard input is ignored or doubled
Click the game window so it has keyboard focus, then inspect its bindings for duplicate assignments. Reset the layout and add one key at a time. If a controller translation layer is active, disable it while testing the keyboard so two input devices are not sending the same command.
Build a per-game profile instead of one universal layout
Classic survival-horror games differ in camera behavior, action timing and available bindings. Maintain a short note for each title containing the movement mode, controller profile, sensitivity values and any required Steam configuration. This takes less time than relearning a layout after an update or reinstall.
A useful profile records four decisions:
- Device: XInput controller or keyboard and mouse.
- Movement: Original/tank, Alternate, or Analog where documented.
- Sensitivity: the game’s own slider values, including Dead Space’s separate stick and trigger settings.
- Recovery: the default preset or RESET path that restores a known working state.
When moving between games, load the new title’s defaults first. Then change only the decisions that matter to your hands and display, rather than importing every old assignment.
Choosing between controller and keyboard
Pick a controller when
- You want the original fixed-camera rhythm and deliberate turning.
- The game recommends or clearly supports XInput.
- You need analog walking, running or camera adjustment.
- You prefer pressure-sensitive stick and trigger movement where the game exposes it.
Pick keyboard and mouse when
- The port provides complete remapping and you want digital, repeatable inputs.
- You need a custom arrangement for accessibility or reach.
- Your controller is not recognized and you want to avoid a translation layer.
- You prefer mouse aiming in a game that exposes full mouse control.
Neither choice is inherently more authentic. Authenticity comes from the movement scheme you select and the way the game responds, not from the connector on the input device.
Frequently overlooked details
- Check the manual, not only the store page. Silent Hill 2’s manual contains a specific Analog recommendation and a RESET command that may not be obvious in the game.
- Separate detection from comfort. A game detecting an XInput pad proves only that the device is recognized; it does not prove that the default sensitivity or movement scheme suits you.
- Keep changes reversible. Defaults and RESET are valuable checkpoints. Use them before troubleshooting a layout that has accumulated several experimental edits.
- Expect port-to-port differences. Even within one series, one PC release may offer Original and Alternate while another documents only keyboard, mouse and XInput support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an XInput controller required for every classic survival-horror game on Steam?
No. It is the safest starting standard for the documented Windows ports, but a game may also support keyboard and mouse or another controller through Steam’s configuration layer. Confirm support in that title’s manual or options screen.
Should I use tank controls or analog movement?
Use Original or tank controls when preserving the fixed-camera tradition matters most. Choose Alternate or Analog when camera-relative movement is easier for you to read; Silent Hill 2 specifically recommends Analog when an analog stick is available.
What should I do if I change too many settings and lose track?
Load the game’s default preset or use RESET where available, test the baseline, and then change one binding or sensitivity slider at a time.
