There is no evidence here of a head-to-head test establishing one best controller for Mortal Kombat 1. Choose by platform and preferred layout: the wired HORI Fighting Commander OCTA is a compact fightpad for supported PlayStation consoles and Windows PC; the Nacon Daija is a lever-and-button arcade stick available in separate PlayStation and Xbox versions. Check the exact model’s compatibility before buying—neither option is documented for Nintendo Switch.
Which controller is best for Mortal Kombat 1?
The best fit depends on whether you want a familiar pad or an arcade-style lever and buttons, and whether the particular version works with your system. The available product documentation supports the HORI Fighting Commander OCTA as a wired fightpad option and the Nacon Daija as an arcade stick option. It does not establish that either is faster, more accurate, or preferred by Mortal Kombat 1 tournament players.

| Controller | Layout | Documented compatibility | Key considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| HORI Fighting Commander OCTA SPF-023 | Wired fightpad | PS5, PS4, Windows 10/11 PC | HORI warns that some PS5/PS4 games may not work. Its D-pad and left stick cannot send opposite directions simultaneously. |
| Nacon Daija, PlayStation version | Wired lever-and-button arcade stick | PS4, PS5, Windows 10/11 PC | Configurable buttons and joystick modes; no analog sticks or triggers, adaptive triggers, or vibration. |
| Nacon Daija, Xbox version | Wired lever-and-button arcade stick | Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Windows 10/11 PC | Different console version from the PlayStation model; the same listed feature omissions apply. |
The platform list for Mortal Kombat 1 includes PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Windows, and Nintendo Switch, but the controller documentation summarized here does not establish Switch support for either product. Confirm compatibility for your exact console and game before purchase.
Should you choose a fightpad or a fightstick?
Choose a fightpad if you want a compact controller
The HORI Fighting Commander OCTA SPF-023 is the clearest fit if you specifically want a wired fightpad. HORI identifies it for PS5, PS4, and Windows 10/11 PC. The model is not wireless, and the manufacturer cautions that some PS5 and PS4 software may not work with it. Its direction keys and left stick cannot issue opposing directions at the same time, including through button assignments. Check that this limitation and the game’s support behavior suit your setup.

- Claw style or traditional gameplay
Choose an arcade stick if you want a lever-and-button layout
The Nacon Daija is for players who prefer an arcade-style lever and action buttons. Nacon specifies Sanwa sticks and buttons, configurable buttons through its application on PC and Mac, and profile support. The joystick mode selector can assign the lever to the left stick, right stick, or D-pad. The stick mechanism and action buttons are replaceable.
That specialized layout comes with trade-offs: Nacon says the Daija has no analog sticks, analog triggers, adaptive triggers, or vibration, and some games that require two joysticks may not be compatible. It connects by USB according to Nacon’s setup instructions. Treat it as a different control style, not an automatic upgrade over a conventional pad.

Check platform compatibility before buying
- Identify your system. The Daija is sold in separate PlayStation and Xbox versions. Choose the one for your console; Nacon lists Windows 10/11 support for both versions. HORI lists the OCTA for PS5, PS4, and Windows 10/11 PC.
- Confirm the game and setup. HORI warns that some PS5/PS4 software may not work with the OCTA. Nacon cautions that some games requiring two joysticks may not work with the Daija. Do not assume a general platform listing guarantees every game or configuration will work.
- Decide whether you want wired input. The OCTA is wired, and the Daija connects over USB. If wireless play is important, these documented options may not fit.
- Check omitted features and input behavior. Consider the OCTA’s simultaneous-opposite-direction limitation and the Daija’s lack of analog inputs, adaptive triggers, and vibration before replacing a standard controller.
Other options and what the evidence establishes
The Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded is a possible modular alternative for someone seeking a conventional PS5 controller with a fightpad module. TechRadar’s general controller guide describes it as modular and reports its own testing impressions, but that is not a Mortal Kombat 1-specific comparison. Its product details and compatibility should be checked against current manufacturer information before choosing it.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Personal comfort and familiarity matter, and the available evidence does not prove a competitive advantage for either.
