Use the standard PlayStation-position controller layout, keep the display at its native resolution with a stable 60-frame cap, and reduce shake or add outlines when those specific problems appear. The guide’s settings are available from the main menu and the in-game System tab, so you can tune the game before a new run or while playing.
Recommended baseline at a glance
The safest first-run setup is the configuration documented in the game’s settings guide. It gives you the intended button placement, a conventional presentation, and enough image quality to judge whether a problem is caused by performance, brightness, motion, or readability rather than by a wholesale preset change.

| Area | Starting choice | Change it when |
|---|---|---|
| Controller layout | Default PlayStation-position mapping | A specific accessibility need makes a button difficult to reach |
| Motion sensitivity | 0.75 | Aiming or camera movement feels too fast or too slow |
| Eye sensitivity | 0.75 | Looking around causes overshooting or feels sluggish |
| Screen shake | 1.0 | Impacts, attacks, or camera movement are uncomfortable |
| Readability | High Readability off | Rose or enemies blend into detailed backgrounds |
| Window mode | Fullscreen windowed | You need a different desktop presentation or troubleshooting path |
| Resolution | 3,840 × 2,160 following the display | Your hardware or display cannot maintain a stable frame rate at that output |
| Vertical sync | On | You are testing a different frame-pacing strategy |
| Frame limit | 60 FPS | Your display behaves better with another stable cap |
| Anti-aliasing | SMAA | You are isolating an image-quality or performance issue |
| Brightness | Use the editable control after first-launch calibration | Dark areas are difficult to parse |
These are documented defaults, not an independent performance benchmark. The settings guide was updated October 15, 2026, and describes the PC video menu as fullscreen windowed, 3,840 × 2,160 following the display, V-Sync on, a 60 FPS limit, SMAA, and an editable brightness control: AllThingsHow’s Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse Settings Explained.

How to reach every setting
You can open the options from the main menu or from the in-game System tab. On PC, the menu is keyboard-operable rather than mouse-dependent:
#1 Best Overall
- Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions through haptic feedback
- Experience varying levels of force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
- Chat online through the built-in microphone and connect a headset directly through the 3.5mm jack
- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
- Play on more devices using the USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth to connect easily to Windows PC and Mac computers, Android and iOS mobile phones as well as your PlayStation 5
- Open the main menu, or pause and select the System tab.
- Use Q and E to move between tabs.
- Select the controller, video, accessibility, or gameplay option you want to change.
- Adjust the value, then press Space to apply the change.
- Return to the game and test the result in the situation that prompted the adjustment.
If a change appears to do nothing, apply it with Space before leaving the tab. Testing in the game world is important: a control that feels comfortable in a menu may feel different during combat, aiming, or a rapidly moving camera.
Controller layout: the best starting arrangement
The controller guide labels buttons as Xbox controls, but the same physical positions apply to a PlayStation pad. This means you can follow an on-screen Xbox-style prompt by pressing the corresponding PlayStation-position button. The complete mapping is:
| Action | Xbox label in the guide | PlayStation-position equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Jump | A | Cross |
| Dodge | B | Circle |
| Attack | X | Square |
| Cast spell | Y | Triangle |
| Arcane Whip | RT | R2 |
| Holy Light | LT | L2 |
| Interact | RB | R1 |
| Heal | LB | L1 |
The controls guide explicitly says that its Xbox names represent matching physical positions on a PlayStation controller: AllThingsHow’s Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse PC Controls. Keep this arrangement for a first playthrough so tutorial prompts correspond to the expected actions. Remap only when a particular reach, grip, or accessibility requirement makes the standard placement impractical.

Jump, dodge, attack, and spell are grouped on the face buttons, while the two weapon or ability triggers sit on the shoulder controls. That gives you a stable reference for learning the game: if a prompt feels confusing, you can first rule out a custom layout as the cause. After you know which actions you use most, you can decide whether moving one action is worth changing muscle memory.
Motion and camera sensitivity
Motion sensitivity and Eye sensitivity both start at 0.75. The names separate two kinds of movement in the settings menu, so change the control that matches what feels wrong rather than moving every slider together.
If aiming or movement overshoots
- Lower the relevant sensitivity slightly from 0.75.
- Play through the same camera or aiming situation for several seconds.
- Lower it again only if the movement still passes the point you intended.
If the camera feels slow
- Raise the relevant sensitivity in a small increment.
- Check a turn, an enemy encounter, and a precision movement section.
- Stop as soon as you can reach the target without repeated correction.
Changing one slider at a time makes it possible to identify whether motion or eye movement is responsible. It also preserves your ability to return to the documented baseline if a later area feels worse.

- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Graphics and display settings on PC
The PC video defaults are a sensible baseline because they follow the display, synchronize presentation, limit output to 60 FPS, and enable SMAA. There is no published universal resolution or console performance matrix establishing a single best choice for every system, so treat these settings as a starting point rather than a guarantee that every computer will hold the same frame rate.
Resolution and window mode
The documented default is fullscreen windowed with 3,840 × 2,160 following the display. Keep the output at your display’s native resolution when the game remains stable. If frame pacing becomes uneven, lower resolution only as far as needed to restore a consistent experience; changing resolution is a performance intervention, not an automatic visual upgrade.
Fullscreen windowed is also a practical baseline when you switch frequently between the game and other applications. If you are troubleshooting a problem that appears only while changing windows, test the alternate presentation available on your system and then return to the mode that behaves consistently.
V-Sync and the 60 FPS limit
V-Sync is on and the frame limit is 60 FPS by default. Keep both while you establish whether the game feels correct. V-Sync coordinates completed frames with the display refresh cycle; a frame limit prevents the game from attempting to render beyond the chosen ceiling. Their usefulness depends on the display’s refresh behavior and the hardware’s ability to sustain the cap.
If your monitor or television does not behave smoothly at the default, change one variable at a time: first test the frame cap while leaving V-Sync unchanged, then test V-Sync if necessary. Choose the combination that produces stable frame delivery on your display rather than chasing a higher number that fluctuates.

SMAA anti-aliasing
SMAA is the documented anti-aliasing choice. Leave it enabled while judging the game’s normal image. Disable or alter it only for a controlled troubleshooting test, such as checking whether a particular edge shimmer or performance dip is tied to anti-aliasing. Restore SMAA if the test does not solve the problem.

Brightness and the first-launch calibration
Brightness is editable, and the published default figures identify 0.5 as the first-launch starting point. Treat that value as a calibration starting position, not a rule for every room. After the opening calibration, adjust brightness until dark environments retain visible shapes without washing out highlights. Make the change while standing in the type of area where you are losing information, then apply it and recheck the same scene.
Readability: outlines, brightness, and subtitles
High Readability is off by default. Enabling it unlocks controls for player and enemy outline color, brightness, and thickness. If Rose or an enemy disappears against a busy background, this is the targeted solution; changing resolution or anti-aliasing will not address a contrast problem as directly.
A practical readability sequence
- Turn on High Readability.
- Increase outline thickness enough to separate Rose and enemies from the background.
- Adjust outline brightness or color if thickness alone is not sufficient.
- Play through both a bright scene and a dark scene before settling on the value.
Use the smallest outline change that solves the identification problem. Excessive thickness or brightness can make the image busier, while too little leaves silhouettes indistinct. Because the game exposes separate player and enemy outline controls, tune each group for the situation in which it is hardest to recognize.
Screen shake and vibration comfort
Screen-shake intensity starts at 1.0 and can be reduced. If camera jolts cause discomfort, reduce this setting before lowering image quality. It addresses the source of the movement rather than changing the sharpness or resolution of the scene.
When to lower shake
- Impacts make the entire view difficult to track.
- Repeated attacks produce visual discomfort even though the frame rate is stable.
- You lose the position of Rose or an enemy during a fight because the camera movement is too strong.
Lower the intensity, apply the setting, and test the same attack or impact that caused the problem. If discomfort remains, combine the lower shake value with a modest sensitivity adjustment, changing only one control between tests.
Tutorials and Custom Mode
Tutorials are enabled by default and are the better choice for a first run. They introduce movement and combat prompts while you are still learning the controller layout. Disable them only after you are comfortable with the actions or are deliberately replaying without instructional interruptions.

- Ultra Customizable Controls
- Mappable Back Buttons
- DualSense Wireless Controller Features Built In
- Replaceable Stick Modules and Caps
Custom Mode is an optional adjustable-difficulty system. The settings guide warns that some achievements become unobtainable when Custom Mode is enabled. Decide before activating it whether the balance changes are worth giving up eligibility for those achievements on that run. If achievements matter, keep Custom Mode off and use the standard settings while you learn the game.
Choosing a controller for PS5 and PC
PS5
A DualSense Wireless Controller is a straightforward PS5 choice because the game’s documented PlayStation-position mapping matches its Cross, Circle, Square, Triangle, L1, L2, R1, and R2 layout. A TechRadar review reports playing the game on a base PS5 with a DualSense Wireless Controller: TechRadar’s Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse review. That is evidence of a used setup, not a claim that every player will find it superior to every alternative.
PC
On PC, choose the controller whose stick placement, trigger travel, and button reach you can use without strain. The game’s control documentation uses Xbox labels, but those labels describe positions rather than requiring one particular manufacturer. Match the physical positions in the table above, then tune motion and eye sensitivity from their documented starting values.
Compare a PC controller on four practical axes:
- Input comfort: button reach, trigger access, sensitivity, and rumble feel.
- Readability: whether you can keep Rose and enemies visible while your hands remain relaxed.
- Motion comfort: screen shake and any vibration that makes sustained play unpleasant.
- Frame pacing: whether V-Sync, the 60 FPS cap, and your display refresh produce consistent motion.
No published test establishes a universal winner across these axes. Use the controller that lets you perform the documented actions reliably and adjust the game’s exposed comfort controls around it.
Step-by-step setup recipes
Balanced first run
- Open System from the main menu or in-game.
- Leave the standard PlayStation-position controller mapping in place.
- Keep tutorials enabled.
- Leave motion sensitivity and eye sensitivity at their documented starting values until a real movement problem appears.
- Use the documented PC video baseline, including fullscreen windowed, display-following resolution, V-Sync, the 60 FPS cap, and SMAA.
- Complete the opening brightness calibration, then test a dark area before making any further changes.
Motion-comfort setup
- Reduce screen-shake intensity from its starting value.
- Replay the attack, impact, or movement that caused discomfort.
- If the view still feels difficult to control, lower the relevant motion or eye sensitivity slightly.
- Apply each change before testing the next so you know which adjustment helped.
High-readability setup
- Enable High Readability.
- Adjust player and enemy outline thickness first.
- Change outline brightness or color only if the silhouettes remain unclear.
- Recheck both dark and detailed backgrounds.
- Use brightness adjustment separately if the environment itself is too dark.
Performance-troubleshooting setup
- Confirm the display mode, resolution, V-Sync, frame limit, and SMAA values currently selected.
- Change only the setting most likely related to the symptom: resolution for a rendering load issue, frame cap for unstable delivery, or V-Sync for synchronization behavior.
- Test the same scene after applying the change.
- Return to the documented baseline if the change does not improve consistency.
Common symptoms and the right fix
| Symptom | First adjustment | Why this is the targeted test |
|---|---|---|
| The camera turns past the intended point | Lower the relevant sensitivity slightly | Addresses input response rather than image quality |
| The camera feels sluggish | Raise the relevant sensitivity slightly | Increases response without remapping actions |
| Impacts make you uncomfortable | Reduce screen-shake intensity | Removes the visual movement causing the symptom |
| Rose blends into scenery | Enable High Readability and adjust player outline controls | Adds a dedicated player silhouette |
| Enemies disappear in detailed areas | Adjust enemy outline controls under High Readability | Improves target separation |
| Dark rooms are hard to read | Use the editable brightness control | Raises scene visibility without changing controller response |
| Motion looks uneven | Check the 60 FPS cap, V-Sync, and display behavior one at a time | Isolates frame-pacing variables |
| You are unsure what a prompt means | Return to the documented default mapping and keep tutorials enabled | Restores the reference layout used by the guide |
| You want adjustable difficulty but care about achievements | Do not enable Custom Mode on that run | The guide warns of achievement restrictions |
What is and is not established about “best” settings
The documented values establish a reliable baseline, not a universal result for every monitor, television, PC, or controller. There is no independent benchmark in the published material and no complete console-specific performance table. Resolution and frame-cap choices therefore depend on whether your hardware and display can deliver stable motion at the baseline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse the four comparison axes—input comfort, readability, motion comfort, and frame pacing—to make a personal setup decision. Keep the default mapping and video values until one of those axes exposes a real problem, then change the smallest number of controls necessary. This approach preserves the game’s documented reference point while giving you a clear way to diagnose discomfort, poor visibility, or inconsistent presentation.
