For most Android tablets—especially 10 inches and larger—a separate Bluetooth gamepad is the best choice. It avoids clamping a heavy screen to a controller and lets you prop the tablet on a stand. The Xbox Wireless Controller is the safest general pick; choose a telescopic controller only for a compact tablet whose dimensions and port position you have checked.
Quick picks
| Controller | Best for | Why choose it | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Wireless Controller | Most medium and large tablets | Bluetooth support for Android tablets, familiar controls and a headset jack | Uses AA batteries; no rear buttons or tablet stand |
| 8BitDo Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller – Xbox Edition | Value and a built-in mobile stand | Bluetooth Android support, two rear buttons and customization software | Its holder should not be assumed to support every large tablet |
| 8BitDo Pro 2 | Emulation and retro games | D-pad-focused layout, Bluetooth, USB-C charging and configuration features | Symmetrical sticks are not for everyone |
| Razer Kishi Ultra | Attached play with a small tablet | Full-size controls in a telescopic design | WIRED describes it for small tablets up to about 8 inches, not ordinary 10–12-inch tablets |
| Razer Kishi V3 Pro XL | Large-tablet telescopic setup | Tom’s Guide reports support for tablets up to 13 inches | Check exact device compatibility; it is less portable than a separate gamepad |
| GameSir G8 Galileo | Wired compact-device play | USB-C connection, full-size grips, Hall-effect sticks and triggers, rear buttons | Primarily for phones and compact devices, not a safe default for a full-size tablet |
| Backbone One, second generation | Phone-first gaming, with occasional tablet use | USB-C wired connection and passthrough charging | Its physical design is primarily phone-oriented |
The Xbox controller is listed by Microsoft as Bluetooth-compatible with Android tablets and Android devices: Xbox Wireless Controller specifications. The 8BitDo model adds a stand and rear buttons, but confirm that its holder is suitable for your tablet before relying on it: 8BitDo product details.

Choose by tablet size and setup
Small tablets: about 7–9 inches
A telescopic controller can make a compact tablet feel like a handheld console. The Razer Kishi Ultra is one candidate: WIRED describes it as suitable for an iPad mini or small Android tablets up to about 8 inches. That is not a guarantee for every tablet with an 8-inch screen. Check the exact device dimensions, USB-C port location, camera bump and case clearance. The Kishi V3 Pro XL or a GameSir G8 model may also suit particular devices, but verify the manufacturer’s compatibility information before buying.

- ERGONOMIC DESIGN: Game accessory controllers are ergonomically designed to ensure flawless control and execution. The shape of the gamepad fits naturally in the hand, so you can better immerse yourself in the fun even during prolonged use. 360° rotating joystick analog sticks and trigger buttons ensure precise accuracy and comfort as well as increased sensitivity so you can better control your gaming remote control.
- Supports controllers up to 11 inch: Scalable design supports most tablets such as 11 inch iPad Pro (M5), 11 inch iPad Air (M3), iPad (A16), iPad mini (A17 Pro), 11 inch iPad Pro (M4), 11 inch iPad Pro 4/3/2/1, for Samsung, Lenovo, Amazon, Huawei tablets etc. (Not compatible with the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and 13-inch iPad Air)
Medium and large tablets: about 10–14 inches
Use a conventional Bluetooth controller such as the Xbox Wireless Controller, 8BitDo Ultimate Mobile Xbox Edition or 8BitDo Pro 2, then rest the tablet on a stable stand, lap desk or case kickstand. The separate-screen arrangement is usually more comfortable than holding a large, heavy tablet between controller halves. A telescopic model advertised for tablets is an exception to check by exact model and dimensions, not a reason to assume all large tablets will fit.
Foldables, cases and unusual layouts
Screen diagonal alone does not establish physical compatibility. Check the controller’s maximum opening, tablet thickness, USB-C alignment, camera bump and whether the case must come off. For wired or telescopic designs, confirm that the connector can reach the port without forcing it. A controller can support Android in software and still fail to fit your particular tablet.
Bluetooth, USB-C or 2.4GHz?
| Connection | Best when | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth | You want the tablet on a stand, wireless freedom and no occupied USB-C port | Requires a charged controller or batteries; pairing and latency vary by setup |
| USB-C wired | You want a direct connection and want to avoid wireless variables | Needs USB host/OTG support, uses tablet power, and can be awkward with a case or tablet on a surface |
| 2.4GHz wireless | You have a controller and receiver confirmed to work with your Android tablet | Receiver may need an adapter; Android support is not universal |
Bluetooth is the easiest default for most tablet play. Microsoft lists the Xbox Wireless Controller’s Bluetooth support for Android tablets. Wired USB-C can be useful for close-range play, but first confirm that the tablet supports USB host/OTG; the connector also needs to seat fully through or around the case. GameSir describes the G8 Galileo as a wired Type-C Android controller, including for services such as Steam Link, Moonlight and PS Remote Play: GameSir G8 Galileo. Backbone says its USB-C model can connect by wire to a compatible tablet, PC or laptop, although its clamp remains phone-first: Backbone One USB-C.

- Cushioned and Durable Membrane: The X5 Lite is equipped with cushioned and durable membrane triggers and buttons. The cushioned feedback provides a comfortable experience while ensuring quieter operation
Do not buy a 2.4GHz model for Android merely because it includes a receiver. Confirm that the manufacturer supports Android through that receiver and that your tablet can connect it, directly or with an adapter. A controller cannot remove cloud or remote-play network delay: controller input, display response, Wi-Fi or cellular conditions, and the cloud server or host PC all contribute.
Recommendations by player
Best overall: Xbox Wireless Controller
Choose this for a medium or large tablet when you want a familiar, separate Bluetooth gamepad and the lowest-friction general recommendation. Microsoft explicitly lists Android tablet compatibility. The controller includes a 3.5mm headset jack, useful if you prefer wired headphones. Its U.S. official listing showed a starting price of $69.99, with some standard colors at $64.99; these are catalog signals, not guaranteed current prices: Microsoft’s U.S. controller catalog.
It uses AA batteries. Microsoft quotes up to 40 hours with standard AA batteries and says actual battery life varies with usage and accessories. Rechargeable AA cells are a flexible option; Microsoft also sells a separate Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C accessory. Check the current U.S. accessories catalog for availability and pricing: Xbox accessories.

Best value with a stand: 8BitDo Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller – Xbox Edition
Consider it if you want Bluetooth Android support, two rear buttons, a mobile stand and Ultimate Software V2 customization. TechRadar reported a $49.99 launch price for this edition; that is a launch-price reference, not a current quote: TechRadar’s review. The stand is a useful feature, but verify its dimensions and stability for your tablet rather than treating it as a universal tablet holder.
Best for emulation: 8BitDo Pro 2
The Pro 2 is worth considering when D-pad feel, retro-style controls, remapping and profiles matter more than a built-in holder. Android Central names it among its preferred Android controllers: Android Central’s Android controller guide. Its symmetrical sticks differ from the offset layout on Xbox-style controllers, so choose based on the games and hand position you prefer. Emulator support still depends on configuring the emulator’s input mapping; no controller is automatically best for every system or player.
Best attached option for a small tablet: Razer Kishi Ultra
Choose it only if you want a telescopic, handheld-style setup and have confirmed that your compact tablet fits. WIRED’s approximate 8-inch guidance applies to the Kishi Ultra, not to all mobile controllers or every 8-inch Android device. Cases, port placement and device shape can prevent a good fit. For a 10–14-inch tablet, a separate controller and stand is generally the safer choice.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Large-tablet telescopic alternative: Razer Kishi V3 Pro XL
Tom’s Guide reports that the V3 Pro XL is designed for tablets up to 13 inches: Tom’s Guide’s mobile-controller guide. Treat that as a reported size capability, not proof that a particular tablet will fit securely. Check Razer’s current compatibility information for the exact model and account for the case, connector position, weight and portability. Razer’s product listings are collected at Razer mobile controllers.
Best wired compact-device choice: GameSir G8 Galileo
The original G8 Galileo is a USB-C wired controller, with Hall-effect sticks and triggers and two mappable rear buttons, according to GameSir. It is most appropriate for a compatible phone or compact device, not as a default choice for standard large tablets. Removing a case may be necessary, and the direct connection means the tablet’s USB-C port and power are part of the setup. Do not confuse this wired model with the G8 Plus or G8+ MFi variants; the connection and compatibility differ. See GameSir’s product information at G8 Galileo and its controller collection at GameSir gamepads.

Backbone One is a sensible option if you mainly play on a phone and occasionally want to connect a compatible tablet by USB-C. It is not the value pick for someone buying primarily for a 10–12-inch Android tablet; a conventional Bluetooth controller is easier to pair with a stand-based setup. TechRadar reported $99.99 for the second-generation model, while Xbox’s store listed an Xbox Edition at $109.99; those are reported price signals, not current guaranteed prices.

Match the controller to the games
Controllers are most useful for platformers, racing games, fighting games, twin-stick shooters, action RPGs, emulators, cloud gaming and remote play. But Android support at the operating-system level does not mean every game accepts a gamepad. Some games offer native controls; others are touch-only or recognize only a subset of buttons and features.
- Check a game’s listing, settings or support information for native controller support before buying around that title.
- For emulators, configure the emulator’s input mapping and test the D-pad, sticks, triggers, Start, Select and Home controls.
- Touch mapping can be a workaround for some touch-first games, but it depends on the app, permissions, device and game policies. Razer advertises remapping through its Nexus app for some games, while GameSir describes touchscreen-oriented mapping modes for supported devices. These tools do not turn every game into a natively supported controller game: Razer Kishi V2 and GameSir G8 Galileo collection listing.
- For cloud gaming or remote play, confirm that the service and game support controller input. Xbox promotes controller use with Android devices for Xbox Cloud Gaming, but network and server conditions still affect responsiveness: Xbox controller and cloud-gaming information.
What features matter—and when?
- D-pad: A priority for retro games, platformers and many fighting games. Preference is personal, so a feature list cannot replace layout and feel.
- Remapping and profiles: Useful for emulators, accessibility and switching between games. Available options can depend on the model, firmware, app and operating system.
- Rear buttons: Useful when you want extra inputs without moving thumbs off the sticks, especially in shooters and action games. They matter less if your games do not use them.
- Hall-effect sticks and triggers: Magnetic sensing can reduce the likelihood of traditional potentiometer wear and drift, but it does not make a controller indestructible or guarantee better tuning. Dead zones, firmware, ergonomics and build quality still matter. GameSir lists Hall-effect controls on the G8 Galileo: GameSir G8 Galileo specifications.
- Gyro and rumble: Worth checking if a particular emulator or game uses them. Android game support and behavior vary; do not assume every title exposes these features.
- Headset jack: The Xbox Wireless Controller’s 3.5mm jack can be handy for wired audio. Audio and controller behavior depend on the tablet and connection setup.
- Turbo: Can suit some single-player uses, but should not be assumed appropriate or permitted in competitive games.
Pair or connect your controller
Pair an Xbox Wireless Controller over Bluetooth
- Turn on the controller with the Xbox button.
- Hold the controller’s pair button until the Xbox light flashes.
- On the tablet, open Settings, then look for Connected devices or Bluetooth. Menu names differ across manufacturers and Android versions.
- Select Xbox Wireless Controller from the available devices and wait for it to show as connected.
- Open a game that supports controllers and test the sticks, triggers and buttons.
Microsoft confirms Bluetooth compatibility with Android devices and tablets: Xbox Wireless Controller.
Connect a wired USB-C controller
- Confirm that your tablet supports USB host or OTG behavior.
- Remove the case if it prevents the plug from seating fully.
- Connect the controller to the tablet’s USB-C port and wait for Android to recognize it.
- Test it in a controller-supported game or emulator.
- If it does not respond, check OTG support, try a different compatible cable or adapter, and test another app.
8BitDo’s Android controller instructions specify that wired use requires OTG support: 8BitDo controller manual.

The tablet cannot pair
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on, then retry pairing.
- Remove the controller from saved Bluetooth devices and pair it again.
- Disconnect it from a nearby console, PC or phone that may already be using it.
- Replace or recharge its batteries, and restart the tablet.
- If available, update the controller through the Xbox Accessories app on a compatible Xbox or Windows PC.
The controller connects, but a game ignores it
Check whether the game supports gamepads at all, whether the controller is in the correct input mode, and whether the emulator has been configured. A game may support only some controls. If the controller works in a second compatible game, the first game’s support or configuration is the likelier issue.
Buttons work, but the prompts are wrong
Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo layouts label buttons differently. A game showing the wrong prompts can be a game-side mapping issue rather than a hardware fault. Choose the layout you use most, or look for remapping if you regularly switch systems.
Bluetooth play feels delayed
There is no universal “zero-latency” connection. Controller response depends on the controller, tablet, game and wireless environment; Bluetooth audio can add another variable. For cloud gaming and remote play, network conditions, display response and the cloud server or host PC add latency beyond the controller itself. A wired connection can reduce wireless variables if the tablet supports it, but it cannot fix network delay.
