For Rocket League on PC, choose the controller layout you already find comfortable: Epic Games lists Xbox Series X|S controllers and Sony’s DualSense as supported, alongside several older options. Compatibility alone does not make one controller faster or better for competitive play. Your launcher, connection method, and controller configuration can affect setup.
Which controllers does Rocket League support on PC?
Epic Games Support says players can enjoy Rocket League with these controllers: DualShock 4, DualSense, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam Controller. That is a compatibility list, not a ranking or a guarantee that every controller-and-launcher combination will work without configuration.
| Controller | What the official information establishes | Practical fit |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Wireless Controller (Xbox Series X|S generation) | Epic lists Xbox Series X|S controllers; Microsoft identifies Xbox Wireless Controller as an example of a Windows-compatible controller. Epic Games Support and Microsoft Support | A natural shortlist choice if you prefer the Xbox-style offset sticks. |
| Sony DualSense | Epic lists it as supported and provides a PC troubleshooting sequence for connection problems. Compatibility; DualSense troubleshooting | Consider it if you prefer the PlayStation layout or already own one. |
| Sony DualShock 4 | Epic lists it as supported; Epic’s Steam guidance includes USB reconnection as a troubleshooting option. Compatibility; Steam troubleshooting | Useful if you own one and prefer its shape and layout. |
| Xbox 360 controller | Epic lists it as supported. Epic Games Support | A supported option for existing owners; the compatibility listing does not compare its performance with newer models. |
| Steam Controller | Epic lists it as supported, and Steam Input includes the Steam Controller among its device families. Epic Games Support; Steamworks: Steam Input | Consider it if you already use this controller and its controls suit you. |
How to choose the right controller for your setup
Start with layout and comfort
Xbox controllers place the sticks asymmetrically; DualSense and DualShock 4 use the PlayStation layout. Choose the arrangement and grip that feel familiar during steering, aerial control, and recoveries. Comfort is personal, and the compatibility sources do not establish a universal preference or competitive advantage.
Match the controller to your launcher
Steam Input supports major controller families and DirectInput gamepads, but that platform-level support does not guarantee that every game, launcher, and controller combination will behave identically. Microsoft also notes that some PlayStation controllers may require Steam Input or DS4Windows for full compatibility in some games. See Steam Input documentation and Microsoft’s Windows controller guidance.

Decide between wired and wireless
USB is a useful first connection to try when setting up or troubleshooting. If you want wireless play, check the specific controller and launcher combination: Epic’s Steam troubleshooting says Bluetooth is not officially supported for Rocket League on Steam and may not work with certain models or controller types. That warning concerns Rocket League on Steam, not every PC launcher. Epic Games: Steam controller troubleshooting

How to troubleshoot a DualSense on PC

- Update the DualSense controller software.
- Disconnect the controller from the PC.
- Restart the PC.
- Reconnect the controller through USB or Bluetooth, then check whether Rocket League recognizes it.
For a Steam-specific controller issue, use Epic’s Steam troubleshooting guide; its advice includes reconnecting a DualShock 4 over USB. Bluetooth support on Steam is not guaranteed for every controller type.

Is one controller better for competitive Rocket League?
The cited official sources establish compatibility and offer setup guidance; they do not provide a head-to-head performance benchmark. They do not demonstrate a universal winner based on latency, polling rate, durability, or professional-player use. Treat those claims cautiously unless they are backed by directly comparable testing. For most players choosing between supported options, familiarity, comfort, connection reliability, and a setup that works with their launcher are more useful decision points.
