For diamond coordinates in Minecraft, mine below Y=16 and go deeper: Mojang’s 1.18 guidance says diamond ore becomes more common at lower heights. The best exact Y level is not established as universal across current versions and editions. “Cords” means coordinates: X, Y and Z, with Y showing your height or depth.
How to find your coordinates
Coordinates are written as X, Y and Z. X tracks east and west, Y tracks altitude or depth, and Z tracks north and south. For diamond mining, watch Y.
- Java Edition: Press F3 to open the debug screen and find your XYZ coordinates.
- Bedrock Edition: Pause the game, open Settings, then World Options and enable Show Coordinates.
What Y level should you mine for diamonds?
Mojang’s Minecraft 1.18 release guidance places diamond ore below height 16 and says it generates more frequently at lower heights. Treat that as a generation boundary and direction—not proof that one specific Y level is the fastest or best in every current version.
A later Java snapshot, 23w31a, increased diamond ore in the deepest Deepslate layers to make deep mining more rewarding. That is evidence of a generation adjustment in that snapshot, not a diamonds-per-hour test or a guarantee that the same exact level is optimal in every release. If you need a precise target, check guidance for your game’s specific version; otherwise, mine deep rather than relying on one universal coordinate.

Deep mining or cave exploring?
Deep branch or tunnel mining keeps you working at low Y levels, while cave exploring lets you inspect exposed surfaces. The available official guidance supports mining deeper for better diamond generation, but does not compare these methods’ yields or establish which is quicker. It also notes that diamond ore is less likely to be exposed to air, so a cave’s visible walls may not reveal all the ore in the surrounding rock.

If you find diamond ore above a lava lake, secure the lava before mining. Minecraft writer Duncan Geere advises: “if you spy some diamond ore on the ceiling of a cave over a lava lake, you should carefully cover or fill in the lake with cobblestone before you start mining.”

- Check below and around the ore for exposed lava.
- Cover or fill the nearby lava with cobblestone before breaking the ore.
- Mine only after the drop area is protected, so the diamonds do not fall into lava.
