Choose by the way your group plays
For a mixed-skill group that needs instant action
Start with Mario Kart World. Driving communicates its rules quickly: steer, accelerate, use items and follow the course. A newcomer can join a race without learning a character build, a move list or a long campaign. The game is therefore the safest choice when players range from children who have never used a racing game to adults who want a quick rematch.

Its Knockout Tour gives a longer alternative to ordinary races. Racers move through consecutive courses and are eliminated at checkpoints, so the format creates tension without requiring a long explanation. Use standard races when people may leave after one round; use Knockout Tour when the group wants a single event with a clear finish.
For a party where tastes keep changing
Choose Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV when the group wants several kinds of play in one package. Board play provides a longer social session, while minigames create frequent resets for players who prefer short turns. Tag-Team Rules support two-versus-two play, Bowser Live adds a larger event format, and Carnival Coaster gives the group a genuinely cooperative objective: players aim together for a high score rather than simply trying to beat one another.
The Switch 2 Edition adds 20 new minigames alongside Jamboree TV features. That variety makes it the best fit for a household that cannot agree on one genre, although board sessions require more time and attention than a single race.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park is the strongest choice when “co-op” means moving through the same campaign together. Players tackle platforming stages, collect items, meet boss challenges and work toward progression instead of taking turns at a party board.
The Switch 2 Edition adds minigames, challenges, collectibles, boss battles, Rosalina, Co-Star Luma cooperative play, enhanced resolution and mouse controls in multiplayer co-op. Those additions give a returning player more to do while preserving the central appeal: the group is working through levels together, not waiting for the next minigame.
For players who want speed and mechanical competition
Kirby Air Riders is aimed at a more action-focused group. Nintendo describes charging, boosting, spinning attacks, rider selection and machine customization. That makes each round more about timing and handling than the item-driven chaos of a kart racer.
Pick it when the players enjoy experimenting with vehicles and improving through repeated matches. It is less suitable than Wonder for a group seeking a cooperative story, and less immediately explainable than Mario Kart World for people who rarely play racing or action games.

What each game actually offers on one console
Mario Kart World: the low-explanation default
Nintendo lists Mario Kart World for one to four players locally and one to 24 online. For a couch session, the important distinction is that the same-screen format is the complete experience: everyone can race together without needing multiple consoles or a network setup.
Use ordinary races for a flexible evening. They are easy to stop after one event and easy to restart when someone joins late. Knockout Tour changes the rhythm by linking courses and removing racers at checkpoints. That mode is useful when your group wants an escalating contest rather than a series of unrelated races.
Mario Kart World is competitive rather than cooperative in the strict sense. Players share a screen and a social activity, but each racer is trying to finish ahead of the others. If your group becomes frustrated by direct rivalry, Wonder or Carnival Coaster in Jamboree is a better fit.
Jamboree: the most varied local party package
Nintendo released the Switch 2 Edition on July 24, 2025. It adds Jamboree TV, mouse-control options, microphone features, CameraPlay and higher-resolution output. The core local formats include board play, four-player Tag-Team Rules, Bowser Live, Carnival Coaster co-op and 20 new minigames.

Carnival Coaster deserves special attention for groups searching specifically for cooperation. Everyone contributes to one shared score, so the mode can work for players who do not enjoy eliminating friends. Other minigames and board rules remain competitive or team-based, allowing you to switch the social relationship without changing games.
A compatible USB-C camera is required for CameraPlay and some Jamboree TV features, but it is not required for ordinary local multiplayer. Voice-controlled modes can use the Switch 2’s built-in microphone. Treat the camera as an optional accessory for specific features, not as part of the basic four-player setup.
Wonder: campaign co-op with Switch 2 additions
Nintendo lists the Switch 2 Edition with Meetup in Bellabel Park for one to four players on one system, two to eight through local wireless and one to 12 online. The edition’s extra minigames and challenges provide activities between platforming stages, while collectibles and boss battles give experienced players longer-term goals.

Co-Star Luma supports cooperative play, and the edition adds mouse controls in multiplayer co-op. Enhanced resolution is useful when several characters and effects occupy the screen, but the main buying decision is structural: Wonder keeps the group in a shared campaign. It is the natural choice when players would rather complete levels together than rotate through isolated party games.

Kirby Air Riders: competitive vehicle action
Nintendo lists Kirby Air Riders for one to four players locally, two to eight through local wireless and one to 16 online. Its systems revolve around charging, boosting, spinning attacks, rider choice and machine customization, so the game rewards players who enjoy learning how different machines handle.
Rounds are a good fit for a group that wants repeated competition with room to improve. Because the game emphasizes mechanical action, give younger or less experienced players a few practice rounds before treating results as a serious contest.
Controllers, screens and accessories
How many controllers are included?
Each Switch 2 system includes two Joy-Con 2 controllers. A two-player session can therefore start with the hardware in the box. For three or four people, Nintendo says additional controllers are sold separately.
Plan the controller layout before buying a game. A single Joy-Con 2 can be enough for some compatible multiplayer formats, but the exact control requirements can differ by game and mode. If your group prefers a full controller per person, budget for the additional pads rather than assuming the included pair covers four players.
Can existing Switch controllers work?
Nintendo says existing Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers can pair wirelessly with Switch 2 in TV or tabletop mode. This can reduce the number of new controllers needed for a four-player gathering, provided the controllers are charged and compatible with the selected control scheme.
Do you need a TV?
No. Local multiplayer works on one compatible Switch 2 system, and the Jamboree GameShare description specifically notes handheld-mode support for its shared content. A TV is preferable when four players need a larger shared view, while tabletop mode can work for smaller groups or spaces without a television.

Is the USB-C camera necessary?
Only for features that use the camera. Nintendo identifies a compatible USB-C camera as a separately sold requirement for CameraPlay and some Jamboree TV modes. Standard races, board play, minigames and platforming do not require it. The built-in microphone is sufficient for voice-controlled modes that support it.
GameShare: playing when only one person owns the game
GameShare can let a Switch 2 share supported games with nearby Switch or Switch 2 systems. Nintendo’s product description for Jamboree states that a person with the Switch 2 Edition can share part of the game locally with anyone who has a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2. This is the relevant answer when your group has multiple systems but only one purchased copy.

For Jamboree, GameShare supports the Mega Wiggler’s Tree Party board and 30 selected minigames. Nintendo notes handheld-mode support and limitations that include no GameChat. GameShare therefore gives a nearby group a useful sample of the game, not unrestricted access to every board, mode or feature in the full purchase.
Wonder GameShare support
Nintendo lists GameShare support for Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park. The published listing does not specify the complete shared-content scope in the same detail as Jamboree, so check the in-game GameShare instructions for the mode you want before organizing a session around one copy.
What is not established for the other two games
The cited Nintendo listings do not identify GameShare support for Mario Kart World or Kirby Air Riders. Do not assume that local wireless automatically means one-copy sharing: local wireless describes how consoles connect, while GameShare describes whether a supported title can be temporarily shared.
How to set up a four-person couch session
- Choose the display mode. Use TV mode when four people need a large shared image; use tabletop mode when a television is unavailable. Handheld play is specifically supported for the Jamboree GameShare content Nintendo identifies.
- Charge and gather controllers. Start with the two included Joy-Con 2 controllers, then add compatible controllers for players three and four. Existing Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers can be paired wirelessly in TV or tabletop mode.
- Decide whether the session is cooperative or competitive. In Wonder, select a shared campaign. In Jamboree, choose Carnival Coaster or a team rule if players want a common objective. In Mario Kart World or Kirby Air Riders, choose races or action rounds when direct competition is welcome.
- Check optional accessories. Bring a compatible USB-C camera only if the group plans to use CameraPlay or camera-dependent Jamboree TV features. Otherwise, leave it out of the setup.
- Use GameShare only where it is supported. If nearby players have their own Switch or Switch 2 systems, use the host’s GameShare option for the supported Jamboree or Wonder content. Confirm the available mode before promising access to the whole game.
- Start with a short round. A single Mario Kart race, Jamboree minigame or Kirby Air Riders match reveals whether the controls and difficulty suit everyone. Move to Knockout Tour, a board session or a Wonder campaign after the group agrees on the pace.
Local, local-wireless and online play: what the numbers mean
The player counts are not interchangeable. “1–4 locally” means one console can host that many players in the same room. “2–8 through local wireless” means multiple nearby consoles are required; it is not an eight-player mode on one Switch 2. “Online” counts players connected over the internet and may involve separate systems, accounts and network requirements.

For a true couch gathering, the one-system column is the deciding figure. Wonder and Kirby Air Riders also offer local wireless for groups larger than four, but that format changes the experience because players are divided among screens. Jamboree and Mario Kart World can still be the better social choices when everyone must look at one display.

Buying decisions and common pitfalls
Do not buy a camera for ordinary multiplayer
The camera is an accessory for CameraPlay and selected Jamboree TV features. It does not turn a two-controller console into a four-controller bundle, and it is not needed for the standard local modes in the four recommended games.
Do not confuse four-player support with four included controllers
Every game in this guide supports four players on one system, but the console includes two Joy-Con 2 controllers. A four-player plan requires additional compatible controllers unless you already own usable Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers.
Do not assume every mode is cooperative
“Couch multiplayer” covers several relationships. Mario Kart World and Kirby Air Riders are primarily competitive. Jamboree mixes competition, teams and cooperative Carnival Coaster play. Wonder is the clearest shared-campaign option. Pick by the way your group wants to interact, not just by the player-count headline.
Do not treat local wireless as a one-copy promise
Local wireless and GameShare solve different problems. Wonder and Kirby Air Riders list local-wireless ranges, but the cited listings do not establish that one purchase unlocks every connected system. Jamboree’s GameShare support is explicitly limited to named content.
Do not rely on an unverified price
Regional prices, discounts and retailer inventory vary and are not specified in Nintendo’s cited multiplayer guidance. Compare the current eShop or retailer listing for your region, then add the cost of controllers if more than two people will play.
A practical decision tree
- Everyone wants to race immediately: choose Mario Kart World.
- You need the widest mix of board play, minigames and team formats: choose Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV.
- You want one campaign that the group completes together: choose Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park.
- Your players care about speed, handling and competitive action: choose Kirby Air Riders.
- You have three or four people: plan for additional controllers, because the console includes two Joy-Con 2 controllers.
- You want to share one purchase with nearby consoles: verify the specific GameShare mode; Nintendo explicitly documents supported sharing for Jamboree and lists GameShare support for Wonder.
- You are considering a camera: buy one only when CameraPlay or camera-based Jamboree TV features are part of the plan.
Bottom line for different groups
For most mixed groups, buy Mario Kart World first: it has the lowest explanation cost and a clear four-player same-screen format. Choose Jamboree instead when variety and party rules matter more than a single competitive genre. Choose Wonder when the group wants cooperative progress and a reason to keep playing after the first evening. Choose Kirby Air Riders when everyone is excited by fast vehicle action and repeated head-to-head improvement.
Whichever game you choose, count controllers before inviting four players, separate one-console play from local wireless, and treat GameShare and the USB-C camera as feature-specific options rather than automatic parts of the multiplayer setup.
