Nintendo Switch 2 is a major generational leap over the original Switch, but it is not a portable PS5. Its real advantage comes from combining a substantially faster Nvidia processor with DLSS image reconstruction, hardware ray tracing, more memory, and a fixed console target that developers can optimize for.

In practical terms, Switch 2 can deliver higher resolutions, more stable frame rates, richer visual effects, and demanding third-party ports that were impractical on the original system. However, its 4K and 120Hz specifications describe output capabilities—not a guarantee that games render natively at those resolutions or run at those frame rates.

The Switch 2 hardware at a glance

Nintendo officially describes Switch 2 as using a custom Nvidia processor. Specialist reporting based on technical information confirmed to Digital Foundry fills in much of the detail, including the processor architecture, clock speeds, memory configuration, and theoretical graphics throughput.

Component Switch 2 Original Switch
CPU Eight ARM Cortex-A78C cores reported; two reserved for system functions Four ARM Cortex-A57 cores
GPU architecture Ampere-derived Nvidia GPU, reported Nvidia Maxwell
GPU cores 1,536 CUDA cores, reported 256 CUDA cores
Memory 12GB LPDDR5X reported; about 9GB available to games 4GB total; about 3.2GB available to games
Memory bandwidth About 68GB/s handheld; 102GB/s docked, reported About 21.3GB/s handheld; 25.6GB/s docked
Graphics throughput About 1.71 TFLOPs handheld; 3.07 TFLOPs docked, reported Substantially lower
Handheld screen 7.9-inch 1920×1080 HDR10 LCD with VRR up to 120Hz Up to 1280×720, depending on model
TV output Up to 4K at 60fps; up to 120fps at 1080p or 1440p Typically up to 1080p

Nintendo’s official specifications cover the display, storage, output, battery, and processor description. The more detailed CPU, GPU, memory, clock, and TFLOP figures are specialist-reported technical details, not a complete consumer specification sheet published by Nintendo.

How much faster is Switch 2 than the original Switch?

The upgrade is substantial, especially on the GPU side. The move from a Maxwell-based GPU with 256 CUDA cores to an Ampere-derived design with a reported 1,536 CUDA cores gives developers far more shader capacity and access to newer rendering features. Memory capacity reportedly triples from 4GB to 12GB, while bandwidth increases several times over depending on the operating mode.

That does not mean every game is six times faster simply because the CUDA-core count is six times higher. Real performance depends on architecture, clock speed, memory traffic, thermal limits, resolution, engine design, and optimization. A game limited by CPU simulation, streaming, or poor frame pacing will not automatically become smooth just because the GPU is stronger.

The extra memory is as important as the headline graphics figures. Around 9GB being available to games can accommodate larger textures, more detailed geometry, bigger worlds, more simultaneous assets, and less aggressive unloading than the original Switch’s roughly 3.2GB developer-accessible memory. The higher bandwidth also helps feed the GPU, although it remains far below the bandwidth available in current home consoles.

The CPU is newer, but it is still a mobile-class CPU

Reported Switch 2 specifications point to eight ARM Cortex-A78C cores, with two reserved for system functions and six available to games. Reported operating points are approximately 1.101GHz handheld and 998MHz docked, with a maximum clock around 1.7GHz.

Compared with the original Switch’s four Cortex-A57 cores, this is a major improvement. It should help with:

  • Open-world streaming and asset decompression
  • NPC and crowd simulation
  • Physics and game logic
  • Frame-time consistency
  • Loading and traversal behavior

But the CPU is still designed for a low-power handheld rather than a high-wattage desktop or home console. This is why calling Switch 2 simply “PS4-level” can mislead. A game may match or exceed an older console’s visual effects while falling short in CPU-heavy simulation, crowd density, or minimum frame rates.

Why DLSS matters more than the teraflop number

Nvidia confirms that Switch 2 has Tensor Cores for DLSS. In a typical implementation, a game renders each frame internally at a lower resolution, supplies motion vectors and other image data, and uses AI-assisted reconstruction to produce a sharper output image.

  1. The game renders at an internal resolution below its target output.
  2. DLSS analyzes the current frame, previous frames, and motion information.
  3. The reconstructed image is sent to the display at a higher output resolution.

This is why 4K output is not the same as native 4K rendering. A Switch 2 game may render internally at 720p, 1080p, or another dynamic resolution, reconstruct the image, and output a 3840×2160 signal. That can look considerably sharper than the original Switch version without requiring the GPU to render all 8.3 million 4K pixels natively every frame.

DLSS is not magic or free. Image quality depends on internal resolution, motion-vector quality, anti-aliasing, scene complexity, and the developer’s implementation. Poor inputs can produce shimmering, ghosting, or unstable fine detail. A well-tuned reconstruction mode can nevertheless make Switch 2’s limited power budget go much further.

Nvidia’s description of Switch 2’s DLSS and ray-tracing features explains the technology, but Nvidia’s claims about large graphics-performance gains should not be treated as a universal benchmark for every game.

What “4K” and “120Hz” actually mean

Nintendo lists a maximum handheld and tabletop display resolution of 1920×1080, with HDR10 and VRR support up to 120Hz. In TV mode, the console can output up to 3840×2160 at 60fps, or up to 120fps at 1920×1080 or 2560×1440.

These are three different concepts:

  • Output resolution: the signal sent to the television or handheld screen.
  • Internal rendering resolution: the resolution at which the game actually creates its frame before scaling or reconstruction.
  • Frame-rate target: how frequently the game attempts to produce frames.

A game can output 4K while rendering below 4K. A display can accept 120Hz while a demanding game runs at 30 or 60fps. A 60fps mode may also use dynamic resolution, and a 120fps mode may require reduced effects or a lower resolution.

Handheld and docked Switch 2 are different performance targets

The dock is not merely an HDMI adapter. Reported figures put the GPU at approximately 561MHz and 68GB/s of bandwidth in handheld mode, compared with about 1007MHz and 102GB/s docked. Reported theoretical throughput rises from roughly 1.71 TFLOPs handheld to 3.07 TFLOPs docked.

Nintendo also specifies higher TV-mode power consumption and says the dock includes cooling hardware intended to help stabilize performance. The extra power budget can support higher resolution, more demanding effects, or steadier performance in TV mode.

Handheld games may therefore use lower internal resolutions, fewer effects, reduced shadows, or different frame-rate targets. The 1080p handheld screen softens the practical impact of those compromises compared with a large 4K television. Conversely, docked mode exposes image-quality weaknesses more clearly while giving the GPU more room to compensate.

Ray tracing is real, but it is not a blanket promise

Switch 2 includes dedicated RT Cores for hardware-accelerated ray tracing. Ray tracing can improve reflections, shadows, and lighting behavior, but the presence of RT hardware does not mean that every game uses it—or that every ray-traced mode runs at a high frame rate.

It is useful to distinguish three claims:

  • Hardware support: the processor contains dedicated ray-tracing hardware.
  • Game support: a particular title implements a ray-traced effect or mode.
  • Practical performance: that mode maintains an acceptable resolution and frame rate.

Switch 2’s ray-tracing capability should not be equated with the headroom of a desktop RTX graphics card or a modern high-power home console. Developers must balance ray-traced effects against resolution, reconstruction quality, frame rate, and other visual settings.

What games can prove about the hardware

Switch 2 Edition upgrades and native Switch 2 games are the clearest evidence of its practical capabilities. They can improve resolution, frame rate, loading, texture quality, lighting, or effects compared with original Switch releases.

Demanding third-party ports, including games such as Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring, and Hogwarts Legacy where available, demonstrate that the platform can support software far beyond the original Switch’s typical technical range. They do not prove that every game from a more powerful platform will transfer without compromises. Ports may reduce texture quality, crowd density, shadows, effects, internal resolution, or frame rate, and some rely heavily on dynamic resolution and reconstruction.

The deciding factors include the game engine, CPU requirements, memory footprint, streaming system, developer budget, and whether a native Switch 2 version was built. Nintendo says that compatible original Switch games are supported, but also warns that some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Upgrades can be free or paid and are title-specific; details should be checked on the official compatibility and upgrade information.

Switch 2 compared with other gaming hardware

System Where Switch 2 stands Important qualification
Original Switch Clearly ahead in CPU, GPU, memory, storage, display, and output capability The exact gain varies by game and mode
Steam Deck Potentially competitive or ahead in some graphics scenarios, particularly with DLSS Resolution, power mode, API, and optimization can reverse the result
PS4/Xbox One Broadly comparable in visual ambition in some games Not a one-to-one match for every CPU- or GPU-bound workload
Xbox Series S Below it in sustained power, CPU throughput, bandwidth, and overall headroom Switch 2’s fixed target and reconstruction can produce impressive results
PS5/Xbox Series X Well below them in raw performance Those systems have substantially more power, bandwidth, and ray-tracing capacity

The comparison with Steam Deck is especially dependent on settings. Steam Deck offers an open PC ecosystem, user-selectable settings, mods, and multiple storefronts. Switch 2 offers a newer custom Nvidia platform, DLSS, a smaller 1080p handheld display, and a fixed target for console optimization. Neither is unconditionally “more powerful” in every game.

Compared with PS5 or Xbox Series hardware, Switch 2’s lower power consumption and compact thermal envelope necessarily impose limits. Nintendo lists approximately 19W average active gaming consumption in TV mode under its stated test conditions. The system’s strength is performance per watt and software targeting, not matching the raw output of a home console.

The limits buyers should expect

  • CPU bottlenecks: More GPU power cannot eliminate limits caused by simulation, crowds, physics, or streaming.
  • Handheld power limits: Portable mode has lower GPU clocks and bandwidth than docked mode.
  • Memory bandwidth: It improves greatly over the original Switch but remains far below current home consoles.
  • Reconstruction trade-offs: DLSS can improve sharpness, but it cannot reproduce every detail of native rendering and may show artifacts at low internal resolutions.
  • Developer support: A game’s port quality depends on engineering time, engine support, and commercial priorities.
  • Storage: Switch 2 includes 256GB of UFS storage, but modern games can consume that quickly. Installing Switch 2 software requires microSD Express; conventional microSD cards are not suitable for that purpose.
  • Battery: Nintendo estimates approximately 2–6.5 hours depending on software and conditions.

Nintendo’s published specifications cover the official storage, battery, display, output, and expansion limits. Check that a storage card is explicitly labeled microSD Express; capacity alone does not guarantee Switch 2 compatibility.

So how powerful is Switch 2?

Switch 2 is best described as a capable modern console-handheld with roughly eighth-generation-plus rendering capability, newer Nvidia features, and unusually effective image reconstruction. It is far more capable than the original Switch and capable enough to bring a broader range of demanding third-party games to Nintendo’s platform.

Its performance cannot be reduced to a single “equivalent” home console. In one game it may deliver sharp reconstructed output and a stable frame rate; in another, CPU limits or a difficult engine may require reduced crowds, lower settings, or a 30fps mode. The most accurate shorthand is that Switch 2 uses stronger hardware, lower internal resolutions, DLSS, dynamic resolution, and focused optimization to achieve results that would have been impossible on the original Switch—without approaching PS5, Xbox Series X, or even Xbox Series S performance in raw terms.
