For a high-end gaming build, the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D is a reasonable CPU to consider—but there is no cited head-to-head test proving it is the best processor for Garry’s Mod. Steam lists only a minimum processor requirement of 2.5 GHz or better, which is not a recommendation among specific CPUs.
What CPU does Garry’s Mod require?
Steam lists “2.5 GHz Processor or better” as Garry’s Mod’s minimum processor requirement. That is a baseline specification, not a comparison of current CPUs or a guarantee of performance in every server, addon setup, or workload. See the Garry’s Mod system requirements on Steam.
Facepunch Studios describes Garry’s Mod as “A physics based sandbox game built on a modified version of Valve’s Source Engine.” That context helps explain why one minimum clock-speed figure cannot identify a universal best CPU: the requirement does not measure performance across the varied ways players use the sandbox. The description is on Facepunch’s Garry’s Mod page.
Why consider the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D?
The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is a high-end desktop gaming option, rather than a CPU shown to be necessary for meeting Garry’s Mod’s listed requirement. AMD specifies 8 cores, 16 threads, boost clock up to 5.2 GHz, and 96 MB of L3 cache. It uses the AM5 socket and DDR5 system memory. These are manufacturer specifications, not Garry’s Mod benchmark results. See AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D specifications.

#1 Best Overall
- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 CPU hierarchy ranks the Ryzen 7 9850X3D as the fastest gaming CPU in its testing and reports the 9800X3D at 97.04% of that performance. That comparison reflects the publication’s general gaming suite; it does not establish how either CPU performs in Garry’s Mod. See Tom’s Hardware’s CPU hierarchy.
How to choose a CPU for your setup
Choose based on the whole build and the kind of performance you want, not the game’s minimum clock figure alone. For a CPU comparison, weigh these factors:
Rank #2
- Pure gaming performance with smooth 100+ FPS in the world's most popular games
- 6 Cores and 12 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 5" architecture
- 5.4 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 38 MB cache, DDR5-5600 support
- For the state-of-the-art Socket AM5 platform, can support PCIe 5.0 on select motherboards
- Cooler not included
- Relevant testing: Give priority to direct Garry’s Mod comparisons if available. A broad gaming suite can provide context about overall gaming performance, but it is not a substitute for a game-specific result.
- Performance tier: The 9800X3D is a high-end gaming option. The cited evidence does not show that you need a CPU in this tier just to satisfy Garry’s Mod’s minimum requirement.
- Platform compatibility: A 9800X3D build requires an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory. Check the motherboard and memory specifications before buying.
- Total build cost: Include a compatible motherboard and an appropriate cooler in your budget. AMD states that the boxed 9800X3D does not include a thermal solution.
What the available evidence does not show
No cited source provides a direct CPU comparison or performance score for Garry’s Mod. Facepunch’s September 2026 update announcement says VPROF scopes were added in several areas for performance profiling, but it gives no CPU product rankings or benchmark results. Treat claims that a particular processor is definitively the game’s best as unproven unless they are backed by comparable Garry’s Mod testing. The update announcement is available from Facepunch’s Garry’s Mod blog.
