For a new high-end gaming PC, the Ryzen 7 9850X3D is the strongest premium candidate, provided independent Helldivers 2 testing and its current price justify the premium. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D or a discounted Ryzen 7 7800X3D is usually the more sensible X3D purchase. Choose Intel’s Core i7-14700K when gaming is only part of the workload and you also compile, render, stream or encode. If you already own an AM4 system, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D can be the best upgrade.
There is no universal winner: your GPU, resolution, refresh-rate target, motherboard, memory and observed frame-time limit matter more than a specification-sheet comparison.

What CPU does Helldivers 2 require?
The published requirements commonly list an Intel Core i7-4790K or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X as minimum, with an Intel Core i7-9700K or Ryzen 7 3700X in the recommended tier. The original recommendation article reports those figures at WePC. Check the live Steam listing before buying, because its system-requirement text was not independently confirmed here.

Those tiers describe compatibility, not guaranteed 60 FPS, high-refresh performance or stable 1% lows. A minimum processor can launch the game while still producing poor frame times in large battles.
Why CPU choice matters in Helldivers 2
Helldivers 2 can become CPU-limited when many enemies, corpses, physics objects, explosions and stratagem effects are active. The limit is more likely with a powerful GPU, 1080p output, reduced settings or a target above 100 FPS. Streaming, recording, browser tabs and overlays reduce available CPU headroom further.
At 1440p or 4K with high settings, a mid-range graphics card often remains the limiting component. In that situation, spending more on a processor may deliver less performance than putting the money toward a faster GPU.

A credible comparison must report average FPS and 1% and 0.1% lows in repeatable ordinary and heavy-combat scenes, alongside GPU utilization, CPU package power and temperature. Without that controlled data, an X3D chip should be described as a strong candidate—not proven to be the fastest Helldivers 2 processor.

AMD positions the Ryzen 7 9850X3D as a current Ryzen 9000-series desktop processor; its official specifications are at AMD’s product page. Verify the exact core count, boost clock, cache, package power, cooler guidance, launch pricing and local stock before purchase.
It makes sense for a new build using a top-tier GPU and a high-refresh monitor, where CPU frame times can matter. It is a poor fit for a 4K/60 system or a modest GPU if choosing a cheaper CPU would fund a graphics-card upgrade. No reliable Helldivers 2-specific price or controlled benchmark was established for this guide, so do not assume the flagship’s premium automatically buys a visible improvement.

Best value gaming CPUs: Ryzen 7 9800X3D and 7800X3D
Ryzen 7 9800X3D
The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the logical alternative when it delivers nearly the premium model’s game performance for substantially less. Use AMD’s current specification table at the official product page; do not copy specifications from another generation.
Ryzen 7 7800X3D
A discounted 7800X3D remains compelling: 8 cores, 16 threads, up to 5.0 GHz boost, 96 MB of L3 cache, 120 W default TDP, AM5, DDR5 and no bundled cooler. AMD lists a maximum operating temperature of 89°C and recommends liquid cooling for optimal performance. See AMD’s specifications.
Choose it when the complete AM5 package—CPU, motherboard, DDR5 and cooler—is clearly cheaper than a newer equivalent. Avoid it when its price approaches a newer X3D chip or when your graphics card is already the bottleneck.

Best Intel option: Core i7-14700K
The Core i7-14700K remains a sensible mixed-workload processor. Intel lists its official specifications at Intel’s product page. The original comparison describes 20 cores (8 performance and 12 efficiency), 28 threads, up to 5.6 GHz boost and 125 W processor base power, while warning of greater heat and power draw than the 7800X3D.
Its extra threaded capacity can benefit rendering, compiling and CPU-based encoding, but core count alone does not establish superior game performance. Budget for a capable cooler and a motherboard with sensible power-limit behavior. Compare the complete LGA1700 and memory cost with an AM5 X3D build; a cheap processor can lose its value advantage once cooling and board costs are included.

The 5800X3D is primarily an upgrade for an existing AM4 computer. It provides 8 cores, 16 threads, 96 MB of L3 cache, a 105 W default TDP and up to 4.5 GHz boost. Confirm BIOS support, VRM capability and cooler capacity before ordering; specifications are listed by AMD.

It can avoid the cost of a new motherboard and DDR5 memory. It is a poor new-build foundation when its street price approaches an AM5 CPU, board and memory bundle, or when you want a newer upgrade path. A Ryzen 7 5700X3D may be worthwhile only if it is actually available and clearly cheaper; verify local stock and pricing first.
Do you need a CPU upgrade?
- Monitor the right metrics. Record GPU utilization, per-core CPU utilization, clocks, temperatures and a frame-time graph during normal play and the heaviest combat.
- Lower resolution or render quality. If FPS rises substantially, the GPU was probably limiting performance. If FPS barely changes while one game thread is saturated, the CPU is a stronger suspect.
- Check consistency, not only averages. Compare 1% and 0.1% lows and note whether dips coincide with hordes, physics or explosions.
- Rule out non-CPU causes. Confirm memory runs its intended profile, temperatures are normal, clocks are sustained, drivers and BIOS are current, and background software is not consuming CPU time.
- Match the upgrade to the target. A 60-FPS, 4K player with near-100% GPU usage usually needs a GPU upgrade; a 1080p, high-refresh player with spare GPU capacity may benefit from an X3D processor.
Total CPU utilization can look moderate while one critical game thread is fully occupied. A system can therefore be CPU-limited in one scene and GPU-limited in another.
Buying mistakes to avoid
- Using minimum requirements as a promise of 60 FPS.
- Buying the most expensive X3D chip without checking GPU utilization and total platform cost.
- Calling the 5800X3D a universal budget choice instead of an AM4 upgrade.
- Comparing average FPS while ignoring heavy-combat lows and frame-time spikes.
- Assuming all X3D generations perform identically in this game.
- Pairing a 14700K with an inadequate cooler or ignoring motherboard power settings.
- Buying a scarce or used processor at an inflated regional price.
- Blaming the CPU before checking drivers, thermals, memory configuration, settings and game patches.
Verdict
For an unrestricted new high-end build, start with the Ryzen 7 9850X3D, but demand current independent Helldivers 2 results and a price that fits the rest of the system. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the likely value alternative, while a discounted 7800X3D can be excellent when the full AM5 platform is cheaper. Pick the Core i7-14700K for substantial productivity work as well as gaming. If you own AM4, price the 5800X3D against a complete AM5 replacement before deciding. For most 60–100 FPS systems, a current Ryzen 5 or Core i5 paired with the strongest affordable GPU is sufficient.
